Only reason i can think of for trying to throw the ball backwards for the rb would be to attempt what would then be a forward pass. If nobody caught it it would be incomplete and get the ball from the original line of scrimmage. Though it wouldnt have passed the line so Idk if intentional grounding would have taken effect on this or not. Would have made the play quite interesting though.

Oddly enough he had the right idea towards the end, since the ball was pitched to him he could still pass it forward, which i guess he was trying to do, just happen to go backwards. If it had gone forward would have been an intentional grounding, so 15 yard penalty (if i remember right)
