i thanks my dad cuz because of him, i know who is harry belafonte. He use to listen to is music when he was alive, he died a long time ago i had 11 now i am 24 years old, and i feel so happy when i listen to harry, he reminds of my father! i luv me some old music
When I was little my dad always played Harry Belafonte's songs, and whenever I listen to them I think of him. If anything ever happened to him, I don't think I could ever listen to these songs anymore.
@Bugalooob I know, I used to go to school there for two years. I was insecure traveling around the island. All thanks to all this repression that people impose on themselves and each other. There are nice people in Jamaica today, but the dance hall culture has contributed to all this breakdown in the behaviors of too many young people. At least they don't condone homosexuality in Jamaica.
I love this song but the "Since Time Begun" line always bugs me:( Belafonte (to my knowledge) is not descended from the indigenous people of the area..and since the Atlantic Slave Trade never took off until the 1500's, this means 'his' people never toiled until then...hardly since time begun:(
Even the Spanish were there before the Africans:(
Then again, he could mean it to be 'humans' in general:)
Still, a classic song, and there are verions of this song without this line:)
@DarkMithras666 Many Jamaican who are descended from the Maroons can claim ancestry with the Aboriginal people who did interact with the runaway African slaves. The Europeans didn't quite wipe out everybody else before the Africans got here! Nearly but not quite!
@evievernon Many, but not all. Many Europeans also claim to have taken a Carib wife and can argue the same point. Fact is, by the time it got to Harry, the blood trace is to thin that it would be a mute point - like me claiming Italian heratige just because Roman invaders possibly took an ancestor for a wife many years ago. And most Caribs died of disease not war
I hope you liked it. I could never listen to screeming music as a teenager...but music like this as my father showed me...I thought it was beautiful. :) And I grew up at an island with fisher-men and the sea all around. Remains me so of my childhood. BIG HUG for sharing!
