  • Watched the whole documentary , wow! She's a strong woman . Raising 13 kids and living in those circumstances. Great documentary !

  • At 1;10 someone says " We are Hillbilly"s an proud to be Hillbilly"s" Excuse me, I Happen to be a "Hillbilly" an believe me these COCKROACHES are not Hillbilly"s. They are lazy SCUMBAGS sucking off the system. When this country was fighting for independence these losers refused to fight and ran for the hills. But now they feel that America owes them money. Well they RAN !!!!! to avoid fighting the British. SO STICK THAT IN YER PIPE AN SMOKE IT !!!!!!! COCKROACHES !! ALL OF EM

  • @gt150glas I will gladly pay extra on my taxes to feed people who happen to be poor by chance. It's greedy fuckers like you who is wrong with America. It's really sad that tards like you have the audacity to label people when you yourself have demonstrated no authority for anyone to take you seriously. Really? A hillbilly labeling another hillbilly? Get a fucking life and a real education so you can at least argue logically, you dumb fuck.

  • @aznlalaland If I was greedy I would be on welfare. I am not a "tard. I dont know what "Demonstrated no authority for anyone to take you seriously"Means. If it did make sense it would be: Haven"t demonstrated ANY authority. Why cant a hillbilly label another hillbilly? I hope your venting released your stress. And you don"t take this out on your wife. Spousal abuse was also portrayed in this series. My comments have nothing to do with poverty, Only Morals. Have a nice day, And read a book. LOL.

  • @aznlalaland Its greedy people like you WHO is wrong with America? This wouldn"t fit in my other post. Yet you brag about your intelligence. Yea< you are intelligent enough to run around preaching to people Ha Ha.

  • They're not so bad off. Fed, sheltered, and have each other. That's the recipe for a good life.

  • its a shame they didn't show more of the fat hillbilly @ 0:40 he seems to be the koolest of the bunch

  • You should be decomposing along with beethoven ASSHOLE ...LOL

  • @carnut476 Another comment mentioning an anal cavity. I do say you have a problem.

  • @gt150glas How did you like the super bowl ? ha,ha,

  • These people have gorgeous pieces of property Get cash from taxpayers. And live a good life. Their houses are quite nice inside. Am I jealous? "Hell Ya" The problem is I have too much pride to sit around and suck off the system (which is exactly what they do). I also have a problem ignoring the Incest,Rape,Spousal Abuse, and other atrocities that are accepted in their lives. TURN UP YOUR VOLUME AND LISTEN !!! Victims of Katrina? Now there is someone to feel bad for . Not these cockroaches

  • @gt150glas you are a pice of cr*p! Probably a Yankee to. I was raised in a place just like this and my people are the same. We come hardy Scotch-Irish stock, and our accent is the closest thing to Elizabethan English that exists today. We love the land and our people and God. Their not sucking off the system as you say, there's no jobs in this area and it's miles away from a town. How about judging all the crime ridden areas of low rent housing/HUD who get govt asst sell crack

  • @Jaxferalsite W.T.F are you talking about? Your incoherent rambling makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. My comments have nothing to do with money or lack of it, or even where a person lives or is from. Its about MORALS. Even the people from Appalachia (including those of Scotch-Irish descent) agree.Tthese people are Cockroaches ! The people you mentioned in low rent housing that act like this are cockroaches as well. I am poor. Grew up poor and will Die poor. But I am not a cockroach Get IT ?

  • what an awesome documentary. i thought this family was lovely, the granny is such a strong amazing woman.

  • @Melz1617 Exactly thank you !

  • very interesting?..a kentuckian from the west flat lands of KY., i didn't know they lived like that..they could buy toothpaste and i am sure there is a dentist there for low income or no income people...anyway may God bless the grandmother and save the rest.

  • Clint should of went to that little whore's house and burned it down to the ground

  • @demarcos69 No way !

  • Spouse gets the house -- maybe i've had too much to drink ?? Ha, ha....

  • Perhaps you're drive her to Suicide ?

  • I was born and raised in the hills of New England.Yea Im a yankee hillbilly. and proud of it. The people I live among are much worse off. They would not have $500.00 cash to bail out a family member for robbery and they wouldnt even if they did. We do not collect welfare. Hit women.get pregnant at 12.backtalk our elders ect. And we WORK. Whatever we can find. They have money for cigarettes but not toothpaste WTF. Wanna see people who live off the land in harmony? Check out the hills of N.E.

  • @gt150glas < You're like a steer a point here a point there and a lot of bull in between. You don't speak for everyone in New England -- and you sure as hell don't speak for all of us !

  • @gt150glas Suicide Rates by state... Ky is number 49 ...West Virginia is last at number .50... VERMONT IS NUMBER 12 now why are you Yankeebillies killing yourselves ? ROFL

  • @carnut476 What does this have to do with my statement? OOh you searched for a statistic that favored Ky. and W.V. and thats all you could come up with. I get it. Try looking up some more. Lets say sexual assault on children spousal abuse and other statistics that actually pertain to what I said.

  • @gt150glas I'll never apologize or excuse spousal abuse or sexual assault no matter what state it's in -- immoral behavior is inexcusable no matter where no matter what -- And yes.. Ky - Wv has way more than their share -- But they're not alone by a long shot !!

  • @gt150glas I don't think you'll beat your spouse or spank your kids, because if you do your ass is going to jail -- and the wife gets the house -- ROFL

  • @gt150glas What brought your shitty Yankee Ass to this web site to begin with you fuckin turd !!!

  • @carnut476 Hey all of your comments on my posts relate to an anal cavity Perhaps you should change your name to "ButtNutt 724" It seems more fitting for you. Cheers

  • And at sixty four i'm no good at diggin coal anymore !

  • @ltuomela Never been good workin at the bank -- never been good at slappin on paint -- never been at makin an engine crank -- BUT I SURE CAN DRANK !! LOL

  • AND NEITHER DID STEVE JOBS ...

  • Michael Jobs... didn't have a U-haul Truck following him to grave yard -- now did he ?

  • The most disturbing thing i saw in this video was a TELEVISION SET - Please take that damn thing outside and throw it down a mine shaft before destroys your kids ....

  • These people are kind , these people are sweeter than suger untill you mess with their kin .

  • I wonder if they ever saw a Black person, besides on TV? lol

  • @macroevolve Perhaps if the darn south had picked its own cotton we wouldn't have this black problem we have today -- these folks never had any damn cotton pickers ...

  • I have no family. I've watched this whole series and as messed up as they are, I'd kill to have a family like that!

  • @stivaro ummm no family pfffftt what are we???

  • well shoot me in the fucking head. These young and middle age men show no ambition to do or be anything in life that’s what’s really fucking sad.

  • My dad comes from a family of 6 brothers and 4 sisters making 11 kids total. His mother and father (My G'ma & G'pa) both came from the depression era. They raised all 11 kids in Little Cincinnati, Indiana (Greene County). My G'pa was a mean man while raising the first 4 or 5 of the 11. Abusing them and G'ma both during a point in time of extreme poverty for the family. He eventually changed his ways after my Aunt Carroll Ann feal ill as a child and almost died. He promised the lord his remainin

  • Watched this and couldn't click on my porn tab. Thanks for uploadin

  • This made my night! Thanks for posting this doc. 2 thumbs way up.

  • Thanks for posting documentary. They were good people, honest, hardworking, and down to earth people.GOD bless them, and hope that the rest of the world can see that it's not how much you have that makes you who you are, but it's roots that brings out your heart and soul !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cold zombielike people from a concrete jungle as far as the eye can see , must find thses people odd...

  • Illuminating. Thank you for posting this series about a pocket of our society of which I am ignorant. Bless all my brothers and sisters in our wonderful melting pot, especially Iree and Bassʻ family who invited us into their lives, even though times were not always conducive to the scrutiny of a camera. Thank you again, and kudos to Rory Kennedy.

  • That was a relief after watching The W. n W. Whites!!

  • I totally agree with Michelle from Quebec Michelle from Quebec. Nice family and good neighbors, lottsa food and love . There is no more than this.

  • This was a beautiful story.Sure they are not rich, but many people with lots more would be envious to see so much love in a family.I was worried with some of the situations shown, but everything turned out Ok for everyone.Stories with such happy endings are hard to find nowadays, and I thank you very much for posting this one.Michelle from Quebec.

  • The people making these docummentaries go back up North and show your own fucking nasty SHIT ???

  • Mr Rory Kennedy, please keep making these great documentaries, they are so inspirational, every single detail told alot more than words can say, loved watching that old clothes washer, they was never a boring moment, they always had company someone to talk to,big families like that seem happier in their souls

  • If I close my eyes, I would swear that is my grandma "MawMaw" talking. I miss her so much, she was just like Iree. Loved everyone & worked hard.

  • She makes me miss my grandma!

  • Man ! that food looks great, love to be at there picnic. lol.

  • would love to buy one of those quilts. Hope many have the same idea and better their lives in one aspect.

  • Grandma's always seem to be the ones that hold families together. I'm not a hillbilly and I don't live in Kentucky. However, when my grandma passed away, our entire family lost contact with each other and we no longer have family get togethers. Grandma was always the one that made sure we all stuck together. Now that she's gone, everything's changed. I miss her more than anything.

  • that is a sweet old lady i like

  • you did do a good job Mommy.

  • I always enjoy visiting this site and takes me back to my youth. I have wrote a new song some might enjoy and sing around the campfires...HILLS OF KENTUCKY_harlan county coal mines.......bout the miners in Appalachian and the fine folks of Harlan Country Kentucky...just click the bluemoongrass link to listen to the new song.

  • that family has alot of love thats whats important

  • thanks to all, that was interesting and entertaining.

  • i think that would be an incredible life my family dont talk to each other and we live close, and i also think clint outta get a truckers license and get the f out and see the world.

  • Sorry ass People, I have no use for them.

  • @kirby10419 WOW, you're such an inspiration and beacon of hope, that your opinion of them probably causes them to miss 15 minutes of sleep a night.

  • The back woods bad boy has got life in prison , SHUCKS. Sam now feels safer and she can move back to the little cabin in the woods? Shes getting her circulation back in her marriage tackle region.......SAM IM YOUR MAN,SO STAND BY YOUR MAN ? AND BY YOUR BED FOR INSPECTION....your future husband?

  • these people fucking love their pepsi

  • Does ANYONE down there own a hat that FITS? Are they all made in 3XL?!!!

  • what do they do with the moss?

  • @jacobdwyane Not sure what they do with theirs, but, we sell it to idiot Yankee tourists so they can make pretty stuff out of it to sell to other idiot Yankees.

  • This reminds me so much of my own childhood in the rural East of the Netherlands.

Although I'm only (?) 53 I was born on a straw matrass and the first light I must have seen was the light of an oil lamp and the first water I was washed in came from a well . Fed with mothers milk, home grown vegetables, home raised pork, milk from our own cows and the occasional rabbit , hare or pheasant my dad poached.

    All gone for ever now.

  • Wow, this scared me on a lot of levels, mostly because it reminded me so much of m ex fiances family...nice people but a narrow escape:/

  • Great documentary. Reminds me so much of my family, but we are very fortunate not to have alchoholism and abuse ruin our lives. This is one aspect of the Southern mountain culture. They play into some of the hillibilly stereotypes on the surface, but the film shows that they are human just like everyone else. I wish they (and lots of others in the Appalachians and Ozarks) would take more pride in their land and be good stewards, that is the best thing our ancestors have passed down to us.

  • I'm just going to say; It's too bad Mrs. Iree is taken! I love this woman!!! Loved the film too! Thanks for uploading it.

  • what happens to the moss they gather?

  • I was raised in privilege just outside of Montreal, got a good education, good job. I know to many the Bowlings seem backwards. I think they're good people; strong morals, family-oriented, honest and selfless. It got me thinking, maybe this is real privilege: a life where no one's out to get you. Sure they sacrifice a lot, but it's traded for beauty, love, peace of mind and freedom. They fail when they leave cause they're not trained bloodsuckers like the rest of us I Wish them the very best.

  • @MorseCoach < You're so kind - thank you very much !

  • What's sad is this was filmed before the oxycontin epidemic. A few days on those pills and people's addicted and then they're crazier than a lifetime of moonshine ever did make ye.

  • Awww...I knew that sweet little boy Clint would come back home. But I was hoping not within 30 days :(

At least he now knows what the big world is like and hopefully he wont be so dissatisfied with his life in the hills.

  • every single person in this family has a bigger house than I do!

  • Why work your life away for a bunch of shit you don't need? Their children never go hungry, a medical card takes care of their health problems, and for entertainment they work, spend time with their family, or get intoxicated. This is more than what alot of families have in this country.

  • @TraditionalChevy who pays for the medical care, some people have to work

  • @brettdark

You, Me, and alot of others that actually work. Haha.

  • @TraditionalChevy you're deluded. There is so much more to it than that. Most of them aren't happy

  • @velvetinetable

The other half of my family lives this way. They have more than I do, despite never holding a public job.

  • ok nice documentary i watch all ten episodes best soap opra i ever did saw ye haw kiss your grandmaw

  • this show done went and mad me hungry for some fried taters and corn bread and beans. bye folks its dinner time. lol godbless

  • @39tommyboy Whats wrong with brown beans, fried potatoes and cornbread??? If you add fried pork chops and a mess of greens, it's probably one of the best meals around. Have you never had that before????

  • it says that it will be taken away..everone has a right to believe what they choose..some folks will onely know the truth..when they leave the planet.

  • @ltuomela yeah what more do you need in life? seriously, he's got it down. beer+rabbits+dogs+plenty of food+fresh mountain air+no b.s. society in your face =good times!

  • Instead of being an independent group of mountain people like their grand parents

they are now wards of the State, sitting around waiting on their food stamps and other handouts.

More Of Gov't luving people to death.

  • I think too many people focus on the materialistic things rather than on living. If you look closely at these people, they really do have it all

  • Iree is a tuff old lady.

  • My mom and day are from Kentucky....dirt poor just like them. Clint was a crying little bitch. He could join the service and leave there any day of the week. Learn to like it or get the hell out....go where the jobs are dumb ass.

Clnt went to Ohio for a month and came back.....what a loser.

  • the ole boy with beer has a handle on it..he goes i got my beer, food, rabbit to eat,my dogs, i love this life...he has no expectations and this is why he is happy..good for him man..

  • @ltuomela hell yeah he knows what's up. the simple life is the best life. people lived simply and close to the earth and nature for like 30,000 years until things got complicated. that dude is cool, he knows what's UP. life is a thing to be ENJOYED.

  • They're cool people.

  • @frickadele hell yeah they are.

  • I watched this whole thing, and by the end, I had forgotten about their accents, and their beat up houses, and their worn out clothes. All I saw was a loving family just trying to get by without many opportunities. And that love is real and rare and more valuable than anything else.

  • @dallasde Yes exactly what i saw too -- None of this big i little you crap that's so common in the cities of America ....

  • This was so good. Learned a lot from this docu. Clint had me in tears the most. Otherwise I would love an update

  • i love this family especially mom i would love to visit them, they could really teach me about making due with what you were blessed with and family love. stay strong family.

  • thanks so much for posting, i love this family especially the mom she's a strong women she really held up the family with love and togetherness. i would love to visit them. thanks again.

  • Iree sure is a great person ...these people are all good and honest people!

Hillbillies forever !!!!!!! Great documentary ! Thank you !

  • @grovelhog Iree is the rock of the family, a good women..very good heart, i like her alot...hell i like them all really..

  • clint reminds me of myself when I was young with a crazy girlfriend that didn't know what she wanted.

  • RORY KENNEDY FTW

  • this documentary was the beeeest ;(

  • I really do wish Bowlins family the best, but theirs struggles are not different or difficult than any impoverished family in the U.S., and better than most people in the world. And unfortunately the same is true of their behavior. My comments are directed at the vacuous comments posted and thumbed up throughout this series. Which is seems to me many who wrote this crap do understand the the human condition very well...

  • @SkNDvRR it's true their struggle is still better off than how most of the impoverished world lives. they've got it pretty good, with their share of family dysfunction/abuse/alcoholism, like all american families, could use some therapy. but they seem pretty grounded in reality and what matters. cool chilled out people. :)

  • Thank you for posting...Really enjoyed it !

  • this is a great documentary. Shows you that you don't have to be rich to be happy. These people have barely anything but each other and they are happier than 90% of people living in big houses and driving fancy cars.

  • That family have great values I wish them all the best

  • i like 'em!

  • Great documentary!

I think these people are looking for jobs but there is no enough jobs, especially for non-educated people. I don't think they can live without gov. assistence, probably only the grandma who is very good in gardening.

The main thing that these people poor, but they have their place to live, food to eat and a loving family and friends.

    They are lucky ones.

  • "we always have food" thanks to gub'mint cheese

  • This was a real eye opener. My fathers people came from the mountains. I am proud of them.us They persevered under amazing difficulties. This is family no matter what they can always come home.us It's my motto! Thank you for posting this.

  • What is the moss used for that they collect for money?

  • @july7nyc -- moss like that is used by florists and interior plant designers, garden centers and hobbyists.

  • Hillbillys and Rednecks is what saves this world. Hillbillys are the coolest people ever. They ain't living a life of missery or anger! Im planing on moving to the us and move to some place on the countryside. I don't fit in over here in Sweden.

    Hillbillys, keep up your work!

  • @Thebanjofellah come on over to west virginia anytime brother. your'e always welcome here.

  • "I got seven brothers, but I can't spare one of 'em." 'nuff said.

  • I like that Grandma shes spunky

  • The bible says that men shall run to the mountains for what commeth upon the Earth a time that looks so near today on our planet earth. If its such a bad dammm place why would the good book say that...You shoebox cowboys had better wake your azz up.

  • @BLUEMOONGRASS cause if ya look at it, the good book aint all that good..its gloom and doom and control..the mountains are sacred and help the children of the earth...that book is all bullshit..man made up and rewrote a 1000 times...all bullshit..im not no atheist or anything like that...im native, and true spirituality cannot be wrote down...why? cause its not man made up..ever see a native bible? nope..and you will never see one..impossible..

  • @ltuomela So true they are taught to love Jews before they're potty trained -- and outside of Yankees nobody hates them more ....

  • @carnut476 the one thing that matters is he says:...i love this life...n thats all that matters man..

  • @ltuomela Well that sure says a lot -- doesn't it ?

  • @BLUEMOONGRASS the bible is a fraud.

  • @TheNewMusicNetwork Woah we have a modern day free thinker here with all the answers. I am intrigued at your novel idea can you enlighten us as to your finding Enstein sir? Oh you don't have any meat with your potatoes? Well might I suggest this food for thought...The bible is one of the only set of documents complied with enough other text to back up it's validation. So now what Dawkin's dimwit?

  • @BLUEMOONGRASS The bible says a lot of things, mostly bullshit. A god that murders innocent children and endorses slavery is not a god worth worshipping.

  • @ReligiousZombie think you got it all wrong my friend and all has a right to their belief...the truth is HUMANS did and still duz all that...have you ever thought of the process that took place to give you life on this planet...amazing isen't it.

  • Did everyone overlook the statement "they are all on government assistance"? Not one of them is self-sufficient.

  • We may look at these people as dumb or whatever, but I bet you they know more useful knowledge than most of us. Imagine if society broke down, who would be better off? Us or them? I certainly couldn't make a quilt or grow a huge garden like that or know what chemicals I have to put down to keep the bugs out and so on.

  • Actually yeah there are people who live off the land(grow tomatoes, salad, green beans etc) and raise their own livestock and hunt for food.

  • You are VERY ignorant or simply stupid, probably the later.

  • I find these people pathetic. The women have been abused by their drunken men who aren't about to leave mommy to go out into the world and bring home the bacon for their family. Ignorance and lack of exposure to the world are to blame. I do believe in welfare for the truly needy on a short term basis, but this is going way too far.

  • @bibboy0 Who said anything about welfare? They live off the land. They aren't hurting you. Abuse? Where? You're as bad as all the other haters.

  • what show were you watching. Ist line said they were all on the draw---living off the land just because the old woman gardened, killed chickens for dinner and worked her ass off-not anyone else .

  • they didnt ask for welfare or unenployment they could survive in this world without a bit of help from you or me i think its great,.sure would hate to see you survive if the world stands someday this will be your destiny

  • They definitely did ask for welfare by not SEEKING work. Noone can live off the land these days when electricity, satellite dishes, automobiles, and Pepsis are the norm as for these people. Tell me how they got these things-definitely not from the soil and not from digging root and moss. Get real.

  • @bibboy0 must be all that trafficking in Prozac, eh?

  • @bibboy0 nothing like a nice fresh piece of spanked hillbilly pussy

  • I think they are a really nice family. They aren't perfect, but overall they seem like good people. I wonder how Iree is doing? She was really the glue that held the family together.

  • A lot of them try to leave but can't stay out long. I suppose they are ill-equipped to deal with life outside of the hollow...a mix of poor education, lack of modern-day job skills, and culture shock.

  • Watched this entire documentary & enjoyed it very much..

Some of it was sad, some was funny and much of it was enjoyable... They are what they are and so be it.. they are far better off in many ways than a lot of us.. Did you notice.. THEY NEVER were without FOOD. AND the Family always stood up for each other no matter what.. ..

So in my opinion,, they are happy, healthy mostly and enjoying life to the fullest as they know it.. Best to all of them...

  • Born and raised here in the Blue Ridge Mts of N.C. She reminds me so much of my granny Imogene and my pa paw Pual Calvin McClure.

  • Wonder why Clint came back from Cincinnati? Seems like he could have easily found work up there back then.

  • HE PROLLY MISSED HOME

  • Beer to drink, rabbits to eat and dogs to hunt with! Doesn't get much better than that! I hope they're all doing ok

  • @Navdan87 hell yeah the good life eh sounds good to me.

  • Now .... lets be fair about all this now people ... theyre a simple happy folk .... why they aint got no reality show of their own i just dont know cause they sure would have some fans .... its better than big city soap operas .... and i know for sure id be a watchin them evry day .... some .... yes sir ....

  • @MrDoublehappy yes it's true, it was t herapeutic to watch, how they all live close to the land, simple life, good values, down-to-earth. living right.(except for the dysfunctional stuff but all families have that) at least they have good values.

  • @catalunarocks Yes they are teaching us all to be real human beings, bless them and their way of life, for the insightful person these people are shinning gems of joy.

  • @MrDoublehappy yes it's true they are real human beings . may we all find our own way to be shining gems of joy too and live simply to be happy and true to ourselves.

  • true people

  • Wish I would have stayed

  • Well, that's a nice pack of stereotypes.

  • Iree reminds me of an aged Abigail Breslin
