  • I've always thought of it like this: there's two levels of incredible music. There's music that amazes you, like Jeff Coffin, where your mind is just blown six ways from Sunday. But then there's a sublime, even higher level of music, and it's the kind that strips away all your thoughts and feelings, and just leaves you humbly THANKFUL. Thankful for what you're hearing, thankful that you're where you are right now to be in the presence of this creation of music. And that's LeRoi Moore to me.

  • 4.14, everybody is having fun except the trumpet ahahahah !

  • Bob Sapp can jam!

  • Leroi Moore was an integral part in the formation of this awesome band and as I understand it he was also responsible for arranging many of the band's songs. He deserves great accolades for that.

However, Jeff Coffin is a much more talented saxophone player.

  • @jamoss11 Im going to have to disagree. Jeff Coffin is indeed phenomenal. But so was LeRoi Moore. As for Jeff Coffin being more skilled? No. More flashy perhaps. But they're playing styles were completely different. And can't really be compared, at least in the form of who was better.

  • I was front row for this (didn't drink at all that day and woke up at like 8am after going to bed at like 5 was there when the gate opened and didn't move for the entire day... luckily our security guard was cool and was letting us piss in bottles) It was a sick show. Coffin really brought it, but I will always miss Roi.

  • @GraceIsGone145 Me and a couple friends showed up at the Main Stage for this show like 30 minutes before it started, and we were about 200 feet from the stage, great vantage point and still very close. You missed a whole day of music at Rothbury waiting for Dave Matthews Band.

  • Excuse the language, but this fucking band is FLYING here. I've seen them perform this song a bunch of times, but the energy is way, way up for this one. Impressive.

  • @headstock48 it's rothbury. the energy there is unique, to say the least

  • @M4lign Okay, not to sound stupid, but who is Rothbury?

  • @headstock48 Rothbury was a 4 day music festival held over 4th of july weekend in a small town in Michigan (Rothbury) at Double J Ranch in 2008 and 2009 ...dmb played (headlined) in 2008...it was fantastic!!! i was there! =)

  • @BigPaulyD Thanks for clarifying! I've never seen them live, so I'm hoping to catch a festival this year. Keep our fingers crossed, right?

  • Stefan is groovin' baby.

  • This makes me so sad. I was at the Staples Center show the day Leroi passed. It was so sad, but it was one of the best shows I've been to.

  • leroi didnt come back.

    god is cruel.

  • one of the best shows of my life

  • that black trumpet player must be 600 pounds

  • Lol. Ross @ 1:52

  • Jeff Coffin, Bela Fleck's sax player.

  • Who's their new sax player? Made my hair stand on end!

  • Man makes me so sad, this was right before Leroi died, Gone, but never forgotten.

  • RIP leroi.....Jeff Coffin for president!!!!!1

  • Would you happen to have #41 from this concert? I saw it on cable once and it was such a ridiculous version.

  • This had to have been when leroi was in the hospital

  • Absolutely incredible. Every aspect is of the highest caliber. Thanks for posting.

  • Good recording, good video. Thanks

  • I love how lush this sounds live

  • haha you can see dave smiling cos of carter's sweet beat/fill 0:36 haha that's proper funny

  • Awesome !!! Check out our cover of Grey Street on my page...let us know what you think !!! Thanks guys !

  • @ShawnyMartin blowing once again not us again

  • thats almost crazy how he foreshaddows leroi's death

  • i know what you mean, but i reality they had no idea, nobody did, that Roi was gonna die.every indication we got is that Leroi was doing well, and was itching to get back in time to start back with the album. Roi was even producing an album during this time which is even more crazy

  • You're an asshole, but that's fucking funny. (ps I love dave and this song, but it WAS funny)

  • I think the sax Coffin plays in this and what he does in #41 are really great.

  • cannot believe I saw them live

    and close.

Carter is the bomb. They all are.

  • I love carter...hes always smiling :)

  • amazing!

  • Yeah, and then the crowd chants his name. It's crazy how the one year anniversery of his death is right around the corner. Much love to LeRoi Moore.

  • i thought it was really sad how he said that moore would be back and playin again, but he never did come back... :(

  • leroi does come back. he IS big whiskey. that album is truly him.

  • ya, but no one could ever reproduce the amazing sound that he created on a sax at a DMB concert. Ya big whiskey is great, but the first two albums are legendary

  • first three albums. Before These Crowded Streets is their best, too.

  • Being able to transcribe solos like this is why I play the tenor sax

  • Comment removed

  • Damn!! Sick sax solo

  • coffin- OMG!!!

  • Holy shit... Jeff just melted mah face !!

He got dave dancing too !!

  • Damn I love this songggg!!!! First time i've ever heard this version

  • DAMNNN I LOve this song!!!

  • 3:20, coffin goes nuts

  • jeff coffin has balls. he isn't even using his strap

  • Oh god, its to good to be real.

  • im very moist

  • dave always kick ass, but damn, he was in the zone at rothbury. BTW, we saw the grey street girls at Chula Vista.

  • ahh that looks like so much damn fun

  • gtoa say i love the trumpit player also though i do feal he missed his calling he coulde play like 3 offencif line positions for any NFL team probly all 3 at the same time.

  • I think the trumpet player was also a great addition to the band. I just feel a bit bad for him at times because he seems to have to stand around a lot, lol.

  • I don't think he cares when that sweet pay cheque comes in lol.

  • That was tits!

  • Grey street is an amazing song and Leroi is SO much apart of that song, besides the vocal breakdown at "she feels like kicking out ..."

leroi's music in the song might just be one of the most moving pieces, although i find my self saying that about a lot of things "dave"

  • Jeff Coffin KNOWS he can never fill Leroi's shoes, and he's good enough to get Dave dancin like the old days again, so I guess he's gonna fit in just fine.

  • Jeff Coffin is a much better sax player by leaps and bounds, he doesnt have to worry about "filling shoes".

  • Dude, I've seen both live too many times with their respective bands. Jeff Coffin is not a much better saxophone player, he is Bela Fleck's saxophone player and his music fits that style. If he was such a better musician, then why doesn't he play on the new album, Einstein?

  • Then you are both a poor judge of talent and blatantly ignorant. Go do some reading on Jeff Coffin and his career as a highly regarded saxophone player.

  • You, sir, are an idiot. I know enough about him, seen him play with both bands (before Leroi's departure) and shit for brains, if you read the original post, I do mention that he is going to fit in just fine. SInce you are obviously a "new fan" being only 24, in the 2000 decade, you have no taste for the way things were. This is not about being ignorant, it's about knowing what I like when it comes to DMB.

  • Why is a guy who's 24 gotta be a new fan?

  • and I do now realize that Jeff does play on the new album, so I am wrong on that.

  • Are you serious? I honestly don't think you can compare the two. They both have extremely polar ways of playing. I think both Coffin and Moore are good players.

  • Both Coffin and Moore are master saxophonists. They each have they're own style of playing. Coffin has a nice articulate style of playing, and Moore had a dark, beautiful sound of playing. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other.

  • They're all so fucking amazing musicians that it just makes me laugh sometimes xD

  • that growl is so nastyy

  • Coffin cant ever replace leroi but he ripped the shit out of the solo

  • Comment removed

  • Aside from the fact that leroi brought the soul to his band...

I think Jeff Coffin will hold his own, haha. That solo is just nasty all over.

  • Wow, Coffin is totally awesome!!

  • my favorite grey street since 7/7/01. Amazing enery coming from Coffin and the whole band is just feeding off it.

  • DMB's woodwind has been amazing since they started

  • Holy shit at how good coffin is seriously

  • Leroi can't be replaced. But I think Coffin is going to do just fine!

  • That was a f**kin amazing version......

  • Yes, yes it was!

  • this is a different 12 string than he usually uses right...i live that maple brown one he uses..or what ever color it is

  • Comment removed

  • such virtuosity from every member of the band, this is the live band to see

  • i get to see them in May. Im really looking forward to hear how much Carter loves the drums.

  • 3 words

    Jeff Fuckin Coffin

  • no one will replace leroi, but jeff will do just fine as the new dmb sax blower. RIP Leroi.

  • Leave Jess alone. He's no LeRoi, but noone will ever be, so deal with it. LeRoi was amazing, but Mr. Coffin is a very talented musician and kicked some ass on that solo!

  • it´s not the same without LeRoi... but I have to admit they are playing awesomee

    R.I.P LeRoi

  • it's heartbreaking to hear him talk about leroi. I the band in june at saratoga, it was phenominal. it was one of leroi's last performances with them. i was very fortuante to see him when i did

  • That makes me want to cry....

  • I have been a DMB fan since about 93 and I can, hands down, say this is one of my favorites. If you don't know anything about DMB....see them live before you leave this world!!!

  • its almost painful hearing him talk about leroi returning

  • R.I.P LeRoi Moore, he is missed

  • god i missed my chance to see dmb last year. now my first dave concert wil lbe without him :(

  • call me a traditionalist but bring back the brown 12 string

  • damn jeff is a frikin beast

  • definately one of my all time favorite DMB songs. Ants Marching would have to be my favorite of all

  • 2:27 I love that part. It always gives me goosebumps. :D

  • well i hope dave and all the band members see thee importants of just that whats really important family you cant take your money or awards to heaven! time is of value! he should take time off and spend it with family as we all should

  • i live on grey st! although we spell it gray st....and i don't own a house or live in an apartment, I am bum that lays in the gutter. the pigeons feel bad for me so they always spare crumbs for me. you watch, one of these days a pigeon will get a little too close and I am going to snag it and dine on fowl evening...i am typing this at the local library. gotta type quickly before they boot me out for my 'odor'...peace to all dmb people!!!

  • thats wat i heard

  • Jeff will be joining them for their next tour, but he has not been made an official member of the band.

  • jeff is lerois replacment now

  • I don't think that's officially permanent yet, is it?

  • dmb will never be the same again....

  • and it BREAKS MY HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • you can so tell that when Dave was talking about LeRoi at the end, that HE KNEW that LeRoi was not going to make it....

    Could you imagine???

Knowing that your closest friend was going to die???

    its so sad.......

  • I don't think he knew anything of the sort at this point. This was only five days after the accident. Moore was actually released from the hospital at one point before having to go back in due to complications, and would not pass for another month and a half.

  • thats good info!!! didn't know that

  • I actually saw him both 7/7/08 and 7/9/08 and Coffin was absolutely phenomenal. He'll be a great replacement.

    RIP LeRoi Moore

  • its sad that dave said that leroi will be back and playing with them again. it just makes me sad. :( i miss you leroi

  • This version of Grey street is greate!

    I will miss you Leroi.

  • NO I Want leroi back !!!!

  • same here! Roi just added some many small touches and he was just freakin' amazing...jeff will never fill his shoes no matter what..just roi's presents alone was amazing, he was so....I don't know he was just Roi and that was what I liked about him, he wasn't a rock star, he just a muscian, and he owned the sax.

  • That is just effing INCREDIBLE!!! Jeff Coffin kills it!!

  • Jeff Coffin is a bad bad man..

  • this song gives me chills

  • You give me chills

  • *Moore..... sorry

  • i know we all miss Leroi... i do as well. but think of how hard it must be for jeff to step into leroi's shoes like that.... i give him lots of credit RIP LEROI MONROE

  • JESUS CHRIST this song just moved me

  • RIP leroi moore. but HOLY FUCK Jeff Coffin is BRILLIANT on his instrument. this is the best version of grey street ive ever seen and its because of jeff. however no one will ever replace leroi...no musicians are ever replaced once they leave us

  • dave wasn't using his taylor w65ce walnut 12-string that he usually uses for grey street, bartender, etc. for this tour. i think he has a new taylor 856ce 12-string ...

  • whats with the new 12 string?

  • Hmmmm. Idk, I just noticed that

  • Hmmmmmmm. Idc, I just didn't notice nothing.

  • me either... just not the same with our LeRoi

  • out*

  • When Dave makes the comment about Leroi its like he knew.

  • i agree

  • I WAS THERE BITCHES!!

  • Dave matthews band needs two musician to replace The One & Only Mr Leroi Moore in the left side of the stage....but dave matthew is still stonger & stronger....This Band is Rocks!

  • jeff is a hell of a lot different to Leroi. both are great with their different styles. can't choose between the two, but I think Leroi suited DMB stuff more though. will miss him heaps

  • I don't believe that professional musicians should ever be ranked against each other. To me, it's like comparing voices.. or saying that one cymbal sounds 'better' than another. Each cymbal has its own place and use. I dunno if I got my point across, but maybe I got close. Ha.

  • I should also say that it's so sad to hear Dave talk about LeRoi. Nobody would've guessed that he wouldn't be coming back.

  • jeff coffin may not be leroi, but he's pretty damn good. i hope jeff is playing at *my* concert!

  • Oh man. If these guys play this in Phoenix next week, I'm gunna crap my pants.

  • this is one of the strongest dave songs. i know what the argument will be; that under the table thru beyond...streets were the best albums to which I agree, but damn the lyrics and the jam band rif to this song just flat out rock. dmb forever.

  • Jeff is a great fit. get better soooon Roi!!!!

  • Jeff Coffin jams..seen him at the blossom he was all over the place

  • put up all the songs man i wanna see jimi thing and seek up... thank you and sledgehammer used to be up but not anymore... if u put them up it would be greatly appreciated by all

  • I saw them at Darien and both nights at SPAC when Roi was healthy and I can't wait to see them with Coffin in OKC...gonna be epic!

  • Coffin is the man!!! Saw them all 9th row in West Palm and he definately brings much excitement to the show! These guys are all amazing musicians who can play basically anything when thrown into a situation. They should release some live tracks w/ Coffin on them. Get well LeRoi!!

  • Boy - Jeff Coffin was really good on this. A different take on it, but I've heard this song dozens of times & it's always nice to hear something new.

Is it just me, or does Dave look really pissed when talking about Leroi not being there? Perhaps just trying to hold in the emotion, but it seemed weird...

  • how you feel about making that comment now, coffin is good but it just sounds different without leroi

  • Wow ya you're right. maybe he knew leroi would'nt make it. RIP.

  • Yeah, jeff coffin is remarkable but there are just certain songs that no one can play nearly the same as leroi, this being one of them

  • In the non gay sounding way comming from me.

  • For a tempary replacement, could not have gotten a better person. My thoughts and prayers are out to him and his faimly is a safe but speedy recovery. On another note Dave is looking mighty fine with that new Taylor

  • Also Tim has some amazing licks in there and really does something to the sound. This is most likely my favorite live version of Grey Street. I love LeRoi as well and is not replaced easily but Jeff definitly brought some style to this! Anyone know of where to get an audio file of this? Hope they put this on an upcoming Warehouse mix!

  • wow jeff coffin is good. dave and carter definitely feeling him too, he fits in well. excited for noblesville!

  • I was here and Jeff was killin it the whole time. But like saxharmony said Lerio is irreplaceable. I was just thinkin how bad ass it would be if he had joined and both of them were playing...not that the band needs it because they sound incredible anyway. But I can still dream huh?

  • Do you not realize that he had no idea he would even be playing with DMB 5 days before this concert. Give this guy some credit. You can't instantly blend together, it takes time.

  • Yea, jeff coffin is a great sax player I love his stuff but Leroi Moore is irreplaceable. Jeff brings a different feel but I like Leroi a lot better with dave matthews. you cant be poppy and funky with everything. sweetness counts for something too.

  • hey saxharmony, suck it hahaha

    -love Mo

  • Jeff Coffin needs to stay

  • yes! keep posting these! i had no idea that dave was being professionaly shot when i was there!
