Protect + float is a pretty solid strategy man. But it seemed like it wasn't really necessary :D.

All of this really makes me want to play FF again...

I feel like Protect and Float is necessary as they deal good damage and the Mad Cow Special is pretty powerful, but casting Float on them probably wasn't in this case. If I had to cure party members and recast Protect + Float, then thats where the Float on them helps a lot.
