I have found that getting the airstone to flow up a lenngth of pipe for a ways encourages a larger water transfer and even more aeration plus you can use it as a fountain effect. put the bottom of the pipe a couple of feet from the bottom and the top 6 inches to a foot above the water, with the airstone inside. This helps if you have low air pressure too, because you can put the airstone near the top of the pipe and it requires less pressure to work and you still get the flow from the bottom
