  • Didn't know Del wrote this. Not surprised that he created this fine song.

  • shawn wot a great sentiment..cudnt agree more,,except we have rockers in england too.listen to del sing...( for a little while),,not shown much,,enjoy...

  • i always loved this song and never knew Del wrote it! He does a good job with it... and the lyrics sound just like Del... RIP

  • @denise007dm ....no no.!!! peter n gordon wrote this for del..ok...

  • @eenavid Noooooooooooooo Del wrote this for Peter and Gordon.

  • @samisunc hi yea ok .del wrote this for p. g....good call.

  • @eenavid Well, it's nice to be right once in a while. lol

  • @eenavid You didn't listen to his own word initially in this clip?

    - I like to do a song I wrote for Peter and Gordon.

  • I've enjoyed Dels music all during the 60's and I'm jumping from site to site listening to him. Who would of ever thought he was suffering from

"Mental Illness" "Depression"& Tock his Life by his own Hand. I hope

You know how much We Enjoyed Your Music. RIP.

  • man, he rocks.. i bet he drove the ladies wild at this point.. i can see them all leaving the husbands at home for a "Girl's night" and a couple back-stage passes with 3-too-many cock-tails in them ;)

  • What other songs did he write, whether for himself or others? Anyone know where to find information on Del Shannon??

  • @coomason5 try wikipedia.

  • @coomason5 mmgo to dels fan page..he wrote all his own hits, covered songs, produced songs,,died too young..be good.enjoy

  • I am so angry. I personally will never be able to understand how anyone with this kind of God given talent, could ever consider taking there own life. I would give anything for this kind of talent. What a waste, what a tragedy.

  • @ceedenisek There had been an investigation as to whether he had been murdered. There was no note and the cause of his death would only be speculation. If the evidence surrounding his death had been conclusive there would not have been a murder investigation. Accidents "do" happen. An aquaintence of mine killed himself while cleaning his shotgun. Perhaps he didn't know it was loaded. Maybe Del didn't realise his weapon was loaded. Who knows???????

  • Yes Del Shannon is over looked when you start thinking of great singer/songwriters, but hey he is up there with the best,i really like Little town flirt,so sad that he had to end his life that way, but his memory and music lives on

  • @juanbbien I looooove Little Town Flirt. Great song.

  • I'm soo glad i lived thru this time. He was one of a kid, Runaway was just thrilling and this is beautiful. Gifted, just gifted...

  • Del, The Best Ever.

  • Damn I like his version much better. I had just been broken up with my first real girlfriend Linda Reid when this song was quite new. It still makes me tear up. DMN!!

  • @dabeefsdad Unfortunately, Shannon had a medical condition which, after being misdiagnosed, was then prescribed anti-depressant medications which led him to suicide. A sad thing, for sure.

  • How could someone so freakin talented who 1) could write play and sing so effortlessly, 2) be worshiped by millions of fans and 3) influence so many artists after him ...commit suicide? Del, you robbed us of the years you had left to bring us so much joy. You are sorely missed!

  • pas belle la vie en DEL ?que du bonheur , belle melodie magique !!

  • @skeptyky

    Oui, une belle mélodie magique

  • awesome just awesome it sounds like it's recorded and i've not heard such a thing that come close to it

  • They should had him play Buddy holly in The Buddy holly story in 1978 acts alot Buddy ...

  • What a great song...

  • Del is just amazing

  • What a tragedy!! Del Shannon's suicide. It never should have happened.

  • good voice

  • Prter and Gordon did a great job on this.but it's hard to beat the great Del Shannon

  • Del is a legend-- from the hulls of every abandoned and crumbling malt shop, to the classic cars now resting in silent repose in an old junkyard, you can still hear him... his voice drifting on the wind and reminding us of the day when good old American rock and roll RULED.

We miss you Del. May the great beyond bring you the happiness you couldn't find here on Earth. We'll see you again someday :-)

  • @Shawnster65 AAwww Shawn Youve HIT it ON the Head , The Guy was a legend . one of a KIND, pLAY hIS music in the car EVERY dAY gOING tO wORK, nEVER tIRE Of it He Was Big In The Uk He Just Found Happiness wITH Leanne God Bless You DEL. iD Love To Know Whats Happened To Leanne, IwOULD Appreciate Sum Feedback Thankyou

  • @Shawnster65 I wish that he would have known how much he meant to so many...He

was one of the best ever......so many good songs that never get old.........Thanks Del for

    years of happiness Dave

  • @Shawnster65 GOLDEN!!!

  • @Shawnster65 Hey what a nice choice of words for such a fine singer who will always be missed. I agree with you 100%...Steve..

  • @Shawnster65 what a beautiful sentiment. Poetic and bittersweet.

  • great version check out the version by del on his sixties album 1661seconds with del shannon brilliant album if you can still get it miss you del you were the best and still are

  • One of the true greats! No question. As has been pointed out he did it all: wrote, sung, played, and performed.

  • I get the chills every time I listen to him!

  • He's cute! Great voice and great song!

  • Del Shannon, One of the very best!

  • what a great voice. rip

  • what a video cracking thanks for putting this one on

  • Love you Del

  • I love this song more now!!! Del is truly an Icon. He will always live in our hearts. He's the MAN!!!

  • Del Shannon roolz! Word!

  • GREAT VIDEO, DEL SHANNON WAS SUCH A GREAT SINGER AND SONG WRITER, RIP.

  • Is Del short for Delmar?

  • @bigalturk1 No. Real name Charles Westover. Took Shannon from guy in Battle Creek, MI night club who wanted to be a wrestler using name Mark Shannon. Westover took last name and Del came from car Cadillac Coupe de Ville which was his bosses car.

  • @hotrodlincoln49

Thanks, I asked because my best friend's name is Del (Delmar).

  • @hotrodlincoln49 He said he wrote it for peter and gordon but did he really write it for himself then they recorded it

  • @spacepatrolman I said he wrote IGTP & it was the 1st hit for Peter & Gordon not written by the Beatles.

Trivia: It was originally recorded by Lloyd Brown produced by Del. Brown's version can be found as a download on iTunes and Amazon.

  • @hotrodlincoln49 right but in the video DEL said 0:03 he wrote it for peter and gordon did he really have pete and gordo in mind when he wrote it I dont think so some guy walked up to seals and crofts and said you have a song called summer breeze i wrote a song called winter wind

  • @spacepatrolman Your point is taken. However, it's easier to say what he said to identify himself as the writer of IGTP then to give a complete history of the song. He did give more information interviews on songs, some of which are on YouTube.

While Lloyd Brown had the first recording, no record company picked it up nor did the Searchers who were offered the song before it was to Peter & Gordon in Australia.

There's a lot of history behind songs. Thanks for your comments.

  • Guys my age felt a huge loss at the death of Del Shannon...He was a part of our younger years. Just a great great talent...I remember "Runaway" when i was in the 6th grade....He was very special to me....

  • @uscgccampbell I, too, felt a great loss when he passed away. Like you, I grew up listening to Del and my favourites to this day are "Runaway" and "Keep Searchin'". I was barely in my teens when they became big hits back in the 60's. Brings back fond memories whenever I hear these songs. I will always hold Del dear in my heart. He was a great singer and a great song writer.

  • @erickonsim ..AMEN my friend...good post..

But I consider us fortunate to have lived through the greatest decade of rock ever !!

  • @uscgccampbell Thanks, dear friend. Yes, I fully agree with you. We both are very, very fortunate indeed. Good songs and great composers are hard to come by these days. Today's music scene is so much different from our era's. God bless.

  • AND most people think that Peter & Gordon wrote this song. HA. They didn't write even 1/2 of their music. Most was written by the Beatles.

  • "Go to pieces" by Peter and Gordon (when I was in high school) was one of my favorites at that time. I had no idea (until now) that Del Shannon wrote the song. I'm delighted, as Del Shannon was one of my favorite singers. Del was one of a kind IMO. No mistaking him for anybody else.

  • We played this "45" over and over in our Army barracks.....missing our Gals back home.

  • A fantastic song writer and performer!

  • Was there the night he taped this!! It was for a show on TNN they were doing at that time. LD's was a great place! Memories galore

  • Excellent

  • Is that a Guild he's playing?

  • @Jnkdog no its an epiphone its more rare [zal of the lovin spoonful had a guild something like that they called it a melted hershey bar ] .

  • Awesome voice... true talent passed.

  • Thanks for posting this .... very nice and informative.

  • Gosh... this tune of Del's means so much for me.. love it...love it... always will :-)

    t

Thank-you for the upload ...terrific !!!

  • A musician who truly deserved to be more succesful

  • @Mattzee91 He was as successful as one could get. so many hits on the radio.

  • This song is sweet and bitter at the same time, anyway love to listen to it. Thanky for the share. Thumbs-up!

  • I'm a Del fan.........great man...see on my account his songs

  • I don't see how dEL THOUGHT HE WAS A FAILURE. hE HAD A VOICE THAT WAS STRONG AND A HUGE RANGE WITH PEOPLE THAT STILL LOVED HIS MUSIC. HE WAS TALENTED IN EVERY WAY. HE SANG LIVE AND SOUNDED EVEN BETTER THAN ON RECORDS/ HE DIDN'T NEED ALL THE BACKUP AND STUDIO SOUNDS TO BE A GOOD SINGER. HE WAS A GOOD SINGER.

  • @lukeloveslauraalways ...Del was GREAT. Runaway-Little Town Flirt-Keep Searchin'-Hat's off to Larry, wow what a talent...OH & don't forget, I go to pieces...I sing that song in my act...

  • I have always liked this song, touches me..hard to explain how

  • Miss you Del brother. You left us way too soon.

  • when was this concert?

  • 1988 in Kissimmee, Florida at a club called the Little Darlin's Rock 'n' Roll Palace. The clip is from a tv series on The Nashville Network which was hosted by Wolfman Jack. Little Darlin's Rock 'n' Roll is no longer open.

There were dvds available put out primarily by K-Tel of some of the shows. No longer in print, some can be found on the internet if lucky (sometimes at outrageous prices).

  • @jaecht83 Some juke joint in Florida for the old foggies that were teens in the late '50s - '60s. Very little authentic about the music - even though Del was playing/singing. Too much homogenous organ/Moog synthecizer and not enough raw early '60s music.

  • One of the 10 most under rated rockers of all time. He could write, he could play, he could sing and his stage presence was second to no ones....

  • You are right-Del had it in spades. I miss him.

  • @LCC0256 although I was too young to remember him in the 60's I did see him twice when he came through Nebraska, was truly an experience I will always cherish, the warm up band was a very popular local group, and the difference was night and day between the two, Del was great!!!

  • Del

    RIP

    Great Music Never Dies!

  • My eyes were filled with tears when I heard this song by Del Shannon. It really makes me wanna cry.....so lovely song by Del.

  • This was at filmed at Little Darlin's in Kissimmee Florida, a great rock & roll club.

  • Del Shannon showed me the essence of "Rock and Roll" when I was in 6th grade, and it's stayed

    with me since... RIP...

  • I don't know if much better, two different styles. But let's face it Del was trmendously ubderrtaed generally speaking. Another grear rocker from the 60's- Don't make like this anymote , thats for sure.

Del my utmost complimnets to you my man, you were great & always will be.

Sandy , this is your cousin , I will never forget that. while we were having our own great times!!

  • 聽到班老鬼個個好愉快。

  • Del wrote the song for Peter and Gordon (UK), but his interpretation is much better.

    What a big performer !

  • What an artist. Superb.

  • Del's voice seems to me to be one of THE voices of the mid-60s. A rocker with clarity and range. Sure wish he could have had a happier ending, because he sure deserved better.

  • Wow.. took me all these decades to find out Paul and John didnt write this song for Peter and Gordon. Great song . Thanks for posting.

  • .Del,, your a bad man

  • Should have been released as a single, would have been a huge hit, Great track !!!

  • RIP DEL! gone too soon!

  • A real pleasure to see Del's own version of this song. His older voice reminds me a little of Waylon Jennings. Thanks, hrl49!

  • Never forgotton. you were the best, Love you Del.

    x

  • Doesn't he say at the beginning of this song that he "wrote this for Peter and Gordon"? I don't think an artist of Del Shannon's stature would ever have to take credit for anything he didn't do. The man at one time sold 8,000 records a day...

  • Yes, Del wrote this song....AND when he was touring with Peter & Gordon he gave the song to them to use....Most people think that P&G wrote it, but they didn't write hardly any of their own music. Most was written by Lennon & McCartney.

  • Peter and Gordon definitely gave the live version of the song a new meaning, and they did some beautiful harmonies on it. It's my fave version.

That said though, Del's version here is pretty sweet too, has a bit of a country feel to it, but not overly country.

As given their age, I bet a lot of the folks on the dance floor in this video were thinking about their first trip to the malt shop or their makeout session in the back of the old Chevy, lol Great times!

  • Another longtime member of the Dirt Nap Band.

  • ONE OF THE VERY BEST EVER!!!!!

  • We al know that peter and Gordon recorded this and it was a huge hit. 2 days ago ,July 18th,2009,Gordon Waller died from acute cardiac arrest.Basically ,his heart just stopped.. what a shame...his voice and presence will be sorely missed

  • simply the best

  • i have the peter and gordon record of this song and it gives del sole writing credit

  • In the description upper right I write that Del did write "I Go To Pieces". The other song writing credits which you may referring to is "Marie's the name (His Latest Flame)" which was in dispute and was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. Thanks for your comment.

  • I didn't know he wrote Marie"s the name of his latest flame thanks for the info!

  • Apologies. 2 months ago someone corrected me and I forgot to delete my inaccuracy. Del didn't write this .. Doc Pomus and someone else did. Doc wrote some for Elvis and the Drifters and Suspicion sung by Terry Staford which was a better record than Elvis' Suspicion (well I just don't like most of Elvis).

  • I think if you do your homework, you'll find that Del wrote the lyrics - possibly the "someone else?"

  • Google maries the name his latest flame lyrics or look it up on wikipedia for a nice article on the song.

  • What a voice!!...incredibly talented guy...Go listen to "Rock on"....I have worn out my CD of that album

  • My heart is shrinking... ohhhh... and my eyes shared a tear of 2.

  • What a fabulous talent!!! Great songwriter and great singer!!!

    Miss you Del

  • I used to be in a rock & roll band and "Runaway" was a staple in our song list. Always a crowd pleaser. Thanks Del for all your great songs! Hat's off to you my man!

  • I'm such a Del Shannon nut. He is a legend. Yes, he wrote so many classic songs. Any songwriter can learn so much from him, I know I have. He'll remain a valid influence on me til I die.

  • So many of my favorite songs of all time were written by the great man, Del Shannon and this is just one more of them. He has brought so much pleasure to my life and that of countless others.

  • His sorrow becomes our joy!

  • Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman wrote "(Marie's the name) His Latest Name"), both Elvis's and Del's versions are very good.

  • Still great. We miss you, Del.

    rockinghamsixtiesdotcom

  • i grew up listening to Del as a kid,,, still stands the test of time legend!! r.i.p

  • Del died 2,9,1990 of a self inflicted gun shot to the head. His wife filed a law suite against the makers of Prozac and WON claiming that it caused him to go into a deep state of depression.

  • 11xzxzxzxzxzxzxzx your right, Del's finest hour is when he wrote his music God Bless Del whom is in heaven & singing to his friends & angels

  • yes he is. i miss him here. such a beautiful voice, i wonder what gave him a bad feeling?

  • not sure but during these tunes he seems so happy, loks real good, and of course, is singing so upbeat with all his tunes..........

  • Fantastic song. Thank you.

  • Great talent sadly missed whose voice never let him down and got better the old he became..R.I.P.

  • This guy was an amazing talent. Could belt out a song as full of power & emotion as anyone could write brilliantly was an outstanding live performer and was way ahead of his time with this genre of rock & roll hope the kids of today stumble upon him the way the did the greatest one Roy O......

  • Del Shannon was a great singer. He deserves more recognition.

  • Del is in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. Great singer and great songwriter. This song by Peter and Gordon was one of the greatest pop songs of all time.

  • LOVE this song. 'CLASSIC'.Del Shannon. How sad he died so young. Such Talent. He will will live on through his wonderful music. Beautiful Song.GR8 VID 2. Thanku 4 Posting this.X

  • Del would have made a fine addition to The Traveling Wilburys. One of a kind for sure, and greatly missed.

  • We Miss you ,Charlie

  • greatest voice ever.....

  • i was right he was 53 right here. He is on his way Out of this world and this is one of his last live performances caught. I saw another one 1990 but I believe hes at his best here in the those last years. How sad he would be dead two years after this performance. Thanks for posting. what a treasure. Someone broke this guys heart some how. His last interview he stated he always wanted to run away. Listen to the high tenor 2:17-35, in the background, he is up There.Del is good the Band is Hot.

  • blkshepherd, when did Del die? what year? was he very sick?

  • this is really nice bei had no idea del was this talented as all i ever heard was runaway..and may Hats oFf..this is one of gods gift to music. although peter n gordon i first heard the song inwhich i love.hearing the man who wrote it himself..is awesome..and he does a heck of a job with from me to u (orignially by the beatles but hes can match them on their own song. dude looks like he has only a little time to live judging from this pic.meaning sumwhere in his 50s..he died at 55.enjoy this.

  • thanks hotrod!

  • I miss Del. My very favorite song growing up was "runaway" this was also a great song, I (and i bet he) wish he hadnt sold the lyrics and sang it himself.

  • very good del

  • Just a Pure, Raw, from the Heart & Soul Vocal That only Del could deliver, What a National Treasure ! Glad you put this back up, 1 of my childhood Hero's,

    Thank's,

    Tejasjohnny

  • Simply put one of the most beautiful songs ever from the British Invasion era of rock and roll as recorded by Peter & Gordon

Shannon finally laid down his version (and in my opinion the definitive one) in 1989 backed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

    Rock On Del!

  • Somebody had this up and took it down so I put it up again because it like you said it's "one of the most beautiful songs ever from the British Invasion era ". Maybe of any era.

  • absolutly one of the greatest songs of all time
