I am so angry. I personally will never be able to understand how anyone with this kind of God given talent, could ever consider taking there own life. I would give anything for this kind of talent. What a waste, what a tragedy.
@ceedenisek There had been an investigation as to whether he had been murdered. There was no note and the cause of his death would only be speculation. If the evidence surrounding his death had been conclusive there would not have been a murder investigation. Accidents "do" happen. An aquaintence of mine killed himself while cleaning his shotgun. Perhaps he didn't know it was loaded. Maybe Del didn't realise his weapon was loaded. Who knows???????
Yes Del Shannon is over looked when you start thinking of great singer/songwriters, but hey he is up there with the best,i really like Little town flirt,so sad that he had to end his life that way, but his memory and music lives on
Damn I like his version much better. I had just been broken up with my first real girlfriend Linda Reid when this song was quite new. It still makes me tear up. DMN!!
@dabeefsdad Unfortunately, Shannon had a medical condition which, after being misdiagnosed, was then prescribed anti-depressant medications which led him to suicide. A sad thing, for sure.
How could someone so freakin talented who 1) could write play and sing so effortlessly, 2) be worshiped by millions of fans and 3) influence so many artists after him ...commit suicide? Del, you robbed us of the years you had left to bring us so much joy. You are sorely missed!
Del is a legend-- from the hulls of every abandoned and crumbling malt shop, to the classic cars now resting in silent repose in an old junkyard, you can still hear him... his voice drifting on the wind and reminding us of the day when good old American rock and roll RULED.
We miss you Del. May the great beyond bring you the happiness you couldn't find here on Earth. We'll see you again someday :-)

@bigalturk1 No. Real name Charles Westover. Took Shannon from guy in Battle Creek, MI night club who wanted to be a wrestler using name Mark Shannon. Westover took last name and Del came from car Cadillac Coupe de Ville which was his bosses car.
@hotrodlincoln49 right but in the video DEL said 0:03 he wrote it for peter and gordon did he really have pete and gordo in mind when he wrote it I dont think so some guy walked up to seals and crofts and said you have a song called summer breeze i wrote a song called winter wind

Guys my age felt a huge loss at the death of Del Shannon...He was a part of our younger years. Just a great great talent...I remember "Runaway" when i was in the 6th grade....He was very special to me....
@uscgccampbell I, too, felt a great loss when he passed away. Like you, I grew up listening to Del and my favourites to this day are "Runaway" and "Keep Searchin'". I was barely in my teens when they became big hits back in the 60's. Brings back fond memories whenever I hear these songs. I will always hold Del dear in my heart. He was a great singer and a great song writer.
@uscgccampbell Thanks, dear friend. Yes, I fully agree with you. We both are very, very fortunate indeed. Good songs and great composers are hard to come by these days. Today's music scene is so much different from our era's. God bless.
"Go to pieces" by Peter and Gordon (when I was in high school) was one of my favorites at that time. I had no idea (until now) that Del Shannon wrote the song. I'm delighted, as Del Shannon was one of my favorite singers. Del was one of a kind IMO. No mistaking him for anybody else.
I don't see how dEL THOUGHT HE WAS A FAILURE. hE HAD A VOICE THAT WAS STRONG AND A HUGE RANGE WITH PEOPLE THAT STILL LOVED HIS MUSIC. HE WAS TALENTED IN EVERY WAY. HE SANG LIVE AND SOUNDED EVEN BETTER THAN ON RECORDS/ HE DIDN'T NEED ALL THE BACKUP AND STUDIO SOUNDS TO BE A GOOD SINGER. HE WAS A GOOD SINGER.
@lukeloveslauraalways ...Del was GREAT. Runaway-Little Town Flirt-Keep Searchin'-Hat's off to Larry, wow what a talent...OH & don't forget, I go to pieces...I sing that song in my act...
1988 in Kissimmee, Florida at a club called the Little Darlin's Rock 'n' Roll Palace. The clip is from a tv series on The Nashville Network which was hosted by Wolfman Jack. Little Darlin's Rock 'n' Roll is no longer open.
There were dvds available put out primarily by K-Tel of some of the shows. No longer in print, some can be found on the internet if lucky (sometimes at outrageous prices).
@jaecht83 Some juke joint in Florida for the old foggies that were teens in the late '50s - '60s. Very little authentic about the music - even though Del was playing/singing. Too much homogenous organ/Moog synthecizer and not enough raw early '60s music.
@LCC0256 although I was too young to remember him in the 60's I did see him twice when he came through Nebraska, was truly an experience I will always cherish, the warm up band was a very popular local group, and the difference was night and day between the two, Del was great!!!
I don't know if much better, two different styles. But let's face it Del was trmendously ubderrtaed generally speaking. Another grear rocker from the 60's- Don't make like this anymote , thats for sure.
Del my utmost complimnets to you my man, you were great & always will be.

Del's voice seems to me to be one of THE voices of the mid-60s. A rocker with clarity and range. Sure wish he could have had a happier ending, because he sure deserved better.

Apologies. 2 months ago someone corrected me and I forgot to delete my inaccuracy. Del didn't write this .. Doc Pomus and someone else did. Doc wrote some for Elvis and the Drifters and Suspicion sung by Terry Staford which was a better record than Elvis' Suspicion (well I just don't like most of Elvis).
I used to be in a rock & roll band and "Runaway" was a staple in our song list. Always a crowd pleaser. Thanks Del for all your great songs! Hat's off to you my man!
I'm such a Del Shannon nut. He is a legend. Yes, he wrote so many classic songs. Any songwriter can learn so much from him, I know I have. He'll remain a valid influence on me til I die.
So many of my favorite songs of all time were written by the great man, Del Shannon and this is just one more of them. He has brought so much pleasure to my life and that of countless others.
Del died 2,9,1990 of a self inflicted gun shot to the head. His wife filed a law suite against the makers of Prozac and WON claiming that it caused him to go into a deep state of depression.
This guy was an amazing talent. Could belt out a song as full of power & emotion as anyone could write brilliantly was an outstanding live performer and was way ahead of his time with this genre of rock & roll hope the kids of today stumble upon him the way the did the greatest one Roy O......
Del is in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. Great singer and great songwriter. This song by Peter and Gordon was one of the greatest pop songs of all time.
LOVE this song. 'CLASSIC'.Del Shannon. How sad he died so young. Such Talent. He will will live on through his wonderful music. Beautiful Song.GR8 VID 2. Thanku 4 Posting this.X
i was right he was 53 right here. He is on his way Out of this world and this is one of his last live performances caught. I saw another one 1990 but I believe hes at his best here in the those last years. How sad he would be dead two years after this performance. Thanks for posting. what a treasure. Someone broke this guys heart some how. His last interview he stated he always wanted to run away. Listen to the high tenor 2:17-35, in the background, he is up There.Del is good the Band is Hot.
this is really nice bei had no idea del was this talented as all i ever heard was runaway..and may Hats oFf..this is one of gods gift to music. although peter n gordon i first heard the song inwhich i love.hearing the man who wrote it himself..is awesome..and he does a heck of a job with from me to u (orignially by the beatles but hes can match them on their own song. dude looks like he has only a little time to live judging from this pic.meaning sumwhere in his 50s..he died at 55.enjoy this.
I miss Del. My very favorite song growing up was "runaway" this was also a great song, I (and i bet he) wish he hadnt sold the lyrics and sang it himself.
nodoubt awsome this is i like all his stuff but this is super and runaway and many awsome this thow how can you not 5 star this just out of respect have to realy no doubt and i allways do any realy
Just a Pure, Raw, from the Heart & Soul Vocal That only Del could deliver, What a National Treasure ! Glad you put this back up, 1 of my childhood Hero's,
Somebody had this up and took it down so I put it up again because it like you said it's "one of the most beautiful songs ever from the British Invasion era ". Maybe of any era.
Didn't know Del wrote this. Not surprised that he created this fine song.

Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman wrote "(Marie's the name) His Latest Name"), both Elvis's and Del's versions are very good.

Del died 2,9,1990 of a self inflicted gun shot to the head. His wife filed a law suite against the makers of Prozac and WON claiming that it caused him to go into a deep state of depression.

i was right he was 53 right here.

Simply put one of the most beautiful songs ever from the British Invasion era of rock and roll as recorded by Peter & Gordon
Shannon finally laid down his version (and in my opinion the definitive one) in 1989 backed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Rock On Del!

Somebody had this up and took it down so I put it up again because it like you said it's "one of the most beautiful songs ever from the British Invasion era ". Maybe of any era.
