  • u almost blew my ears off when the machine booted up :)

  • Turnkey linux. Ubuntu that is prepared to instantly be used as any kind of server you could ask for. Google Turnkey Linux

  • I installed ubuntu server on vmware player and i didnt get the same option as you. HELP

  • great information, will follow your step in setting up. thanks,

  • Dude I just installed ubuntu 10.04 today and when I rebooted my pc I was bought to cmd looking page(terminal)--so I entered my username and password-- I don't no wa to do after that--- please tell me wa to do

  • @muhammad517 First off, you should use Linux Mint rather than Ubuntu. In my experience, Ubuntu has caused more problems on my PC than even Windows XP. I would install it, then it would just stop, so I would repeat the process. That happened several times. With Linux Mint, though, that's only happened once, because I messed with the boot loader. Linux might be derived from Ubuntu, but I still say Ubuntu is a "prettyfied" Linux.

  • @tjrieves And Mint isn't? No offense, but Mint is just as bad.

  • @tjrieves That that happend to you doesn't mean Ubuntu is a bad OS... :P I have it running perfectly fine on my laptop. Could be that some hardware or something isn't supporting, but that has more to do with manufacturers not supporting Linux than with the OS it self.

  • @tjrieves And Mint is even more "prettified" Linux. Don't you know that Mint is Ubuntu with a few non-free packages installed? You're still using Ubuntu.

  • @tjrieves this guy hilarious!

  • @muhammad517 you can type cntrl F7 to get to your desktop.

  • @muhammad517 Yes, Ubuntu Server comes only with a command line interface by default. You can find some tutorials to learn how to work with it, but you can also install a graphical user interface. Obviously, this will take up some extra RAM and stuff, but you can do it with this command:

    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

This will instal the GNOME Desktop environment for you. :)

  • @muhammad517 After that, do something awesome like run a minecraft server or host a web site or an ftp site!

  • Estra usando VirtualBox, xq no usas un PC y asi aprendemos todos!!!

  • what does it mean proxy? i connect to the internet through a router if thats what it means. Can somone tell me what IT defines as a "router" and what i should enter in the entry box.

  • @RadioHyperactive You probably aren't using a proxy. A proxy is out on the internet and usually helps with secure and anonymous web browsing.

  • Yes you can.

    "apt-get install icewm"

  • i have finished the install but i get a load of erros on login and it dosent let me login

  • Crap comment, no more of this shit please.

  • froze at configuiring apt 43%

  • ubuntu-server, thats what i called mine!!

  • i tried ubuntu a while ago on vmware and it was great. so then i installed ubunto on my other laptop. really great OS serve. my server now is running with AMD Sempron 3000+ (1.8Ghz) DDR2 (1Gb x2)

  • it looks like it ran sudo apt-get update apt-get which is the package manager and then update to update your package list with the new sources. also he probably ran sudo apt-get upgrade to upgrade all installed packages on the system to match up with the new versions from the new sources.list file.

  • yes thats right he typed sudo apt-get upgrade

    it worked thanks

  • no problem anytime.

  • At the end of the tutorial, after he presses Ctrl X to come out, he says now type... then the video stops... Whats the command?

  • looking for training...any good quality training...no corporate sponsored pirates..just plain good training on linux..

  • is the server free too?

  • yes

  • yes it is

  • is there a GUI in linux server?

  • usually you manage the server over ssh or web based with webmin, but if you need a real GUI just install one of the desktop packages from command line:

    ubuntu-desktop for gnome

    kubuntu-desktop for kde

    xubuntu-desktop for xfce

  • thanks! worked well but left out some features :( but oh well

  • @dmntr "but if you need a real GUI you should stop everything because you fail."

    FIX'D

  • Not quite sure, but you are going to need to setup a domain for it...

    Check out

    help (dot) ubuntu (dot) com

Replacing (dot) with an actual period... stupid YouTube...

  • +1 good.

  • how do i get my username?

  • so now we can host websites?

  • Yes, Apache will be your web server.

More advanced uses can install PHP for dynamic pages.

And advanced user can also install MySQL for databases if your want to have a database for your site.
