The aid to the nascent american nation was ruinous to France, and particularly the royalty. Americans must always remember the brave frenchmen who aided us of their own accord, and of the entry of the french navy that was decisive. Victory seems improbable without french assistance. At any rate, as a marine i was always very proud of our part in the battle of belleau wood, though I remain doubtful of whether the american entry into WWI was appropriate. Nous voila, lafayette nonetheless.
