It's such a good film, thought-provoking, and ultimately, really quite depressing. Misato's death scene is the worst part, when she tries her hardest to help Shinji with his depression before she dies from being shot, then destroyed in an explosion...He finds out his EVA is sealed in Bakelite, and can't do anything to save Asuka. It's heartbreaking.

The lip-sync is pretty bad, character design changes every five seconds, Misato wears magical now-you-see-it-now-you-don't lipstick....an insult to a great Angel. I think it's brilliant they made her so much more fluid and powerful in Rebuild. And then of course there's Rei's smile after defeating her, which is the cutest thing ever animated.

Rei, on the other hand, is slightly more human, being part mother of Humanity itself, so has a kind of concept of love, but doesn't really get to "love" Shinji because she blows herself up. The AT field is the "wall of the heart", that is, a type of energy tied to living beings that keeps the soul in.
