  • I have my students put a baby''s sock over the scroll and secure the violin against the wall. This gives the arm the freedom it needs while developing the vibrato. Hold the violin securely with your shoulder and your back teeth and not your chin. The sock won't fall as a piece of cloth could easily fall down, causing frustration. Use 3rd or 4th position, not 1st position. Good Luck! Learning vibrato takes a lot of practice!

  • This is the best demonstration of the vibrato that I have seen so far! Thanks for sharing.

  • Your violin shakes during vibrator because you hold your violin's neck incorrectly. If u hold it correctly, then you don't need a wall like that because ur violin won't shake

  • i cant find anything to hold it on the wall because it slides down

  • LOL, I'm just imagining you having a wall in front of you in a concerto ;)

Dude, Practicing based on a method is always the best choice in long term

  • :(

  • its a good practice for arm vibrato...remember there is 2 kinds of vibrato..one is wrist vibrato its more on wrist and this is arm vibrato..the movement is at the arm..

Arm vibrato is advisable to long arms .. but you can also learn both vibrato...for this video tumbs up.. its a good practice FOR ARM VIBRATO. not for wrist :) different style for wrist ..(for me)

  • ahhhhhhhh my ears!

  • i can do the vibrato quite well, but i do have issues with keeping the violin totally still. i think that has a lot to do with my hold though...

  • I no peeps from supa pro orchestras who learnt and teach vibrato exactly like this

  • he is doing vibrato incorrectly anyway. The note should always be "bent" DOWN and NEVER UP!

  • @NeufilmsInc

What if you want to pretend your playing guitar?

  • I'd be worried about putting too much pressure into it and breaking it

  • Thank you, i plan to learn from this video, ill be uploading images of my violin to my website so people can see it, its not fancy but it's previous owner said it to be 300 years old though looks brand new. Ill link to your video in the virtual worlds im involved in. to contact me MistwoodPromise@gmail.com

  • ...でぶ

  • de lujo el video

  • I think this in an awful idea for learning vibrato. FIrst of all it is OK if your violin shakes a little. My violin shakes somewhat when I do it and I have been playing for 15 years.

A good shoulder rest and chin rest will alow your shoulder and chin to anchor your instrument to your body. It is fine if your scroll shakes by a centimeter or so. Alow your thumb to support the neck and press and rock your finger. If you try too keep the scroll still you will likely be too stiff.

  • @gdog78749

From Galamian Pg 39 - The Study of Vibrato: " Resting the scroll of the violin on the music stand OR AGAINST the wall is often a helpful device in the beginning stages."

  • i love playing, but I HATE THE FREAKIN VIBRATO! its hard, it makes me feeel like im not a good player lol

  • @AyeeResa don't give up. You'll feel totally pro when you do finally get it! Good luck :)

  • amazing

  • pointless

  • OK, but what happens when you can't use a wall? I might be wrong, it seems to me that it would be better to learn to change whatever you're doing to make it shake, and learn not to, without leaning on a wall. Then you can practice anywhere without needing a crutch.

  • @aprilmcmillan I have tried this, and guess what happens when you move away from the wall? Either you drop the fiddle, it starts shaking again, or you end up clamping it again. The only thing this is useful for is to teach oneself to hold the fiddle up because often even when one thinks it is horizontal it bl***y well isn't!

  • Speechless r.......

  • dude...

  • Its too sharp.

  • very good! Thank you for this video

  • i almost wanna give up it shakes my violin when i do vibrato... il try this tips...thanks

  • Do you you know..

    that forcing your violin to,,,

is not good for your violin..

it is better to practice without that wall..

  • @1qa2w3e Um, I highly doubt he is putting EXCESSIVE force to the violin. I mean shit man, its not like he is making a dent in the wall, or smashing it against the wall. Plus he has that little clother, to protect it from actually having any damage.

  • how do you do it without shaking the violin?

  • just do it and keep practise!

  • this is great thnks :)

  • is honestly sounds like a dieing cat -_-

  • @damans12 hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    xDDD

    ya wt was that xD

  • p.s. pushing the violin up against a wall seems to be the only way I can achieve vibrato :(

  • You know when I see professionals play with vibrato on violin, I never see that complete motion of the up down with their finger..I am soconfused on this!

  • are your fingers supposed to be the only thing moving when you do vibrato? or can your for arm move too?

  • @n0ri514 yes, arm too

  • It sounds like its shouting "AYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!"

  • lulz i cracked my chin rest in 3 places from pressing so hard

  • Best song ever!!!!!!!!

  • LOL, simple yet effective, Great trick dude !

When seated on the ground u can use a knee :-)

All is permitted untill the neckmuscles have the control.

Definately i will use it when i get to the stage of playing vibratonotes and it appears i can't.

    Thanks for the tip.

  • el pulgar no se pone asi ......parece mas semitonos...

  • that was a hell of alot better than this david Kaynor guy tryin to teach this technique

  • Although that is a wonderful way to practice, its not like you'll be able to put that violin cover on the wall when you paly though lol....but anyhow thanks for the tips because i play high school viola and good luck on your education later man..(or girl)

  • Thank you! This is very helpful!! :)

  • Very helpful. I will practice this tonight. thank you :)

  • Thanks for the tip. Regards

  • yes, it was fucking bright tho the sound is awful! I'm a try it 2morrow

  • er... well it's a way of vibrato technique... ups

  • ok

    peru

  • idiot

  • @Lutekbutek ignorance

  • freakin heck! that was really anoying lol but it helped me alot sooooo thanks!

  • hehe that is good but u hold the violin different that i do.... and aaah is hard to do vibrato with the possition.. my teacher teach me a different way and i think is easier but its a good lessen hehe

  • what are you talking about I couldn't even do it with out a wall once you get good then you move off!

  • OMG that is so fucking bright!!!!!!

  • Some violins are bigger and some are smaller right? and no I'm not talking about a viola or a cello.

  • @yaknowurright ... yeah you get up to a size 4/4 and it can go down as low as 1/16 which is TINY, you usually start at about a size 1/2 or 3/4 and by about age 10 you move on to a full size (4/4) and thats as big as they get! (unless you go into all these expensive makes, average price £800)

  • @yaknowurright 2/4 3/4 4/4 right?

  • I like the idea for control but I think not pratical

  • the noise is anoying

  • ma che sta roba

  • I knew a violin Teacher once who Nailed his violin to the classroom wall!!...........WHY?!

  • lol

  • Muy bueno

    Gracias

  • This isn't very good for the violin....

    plus, it's quite risky

  • im grade 5 n still i can't get the hang of this :c

  • i can do it on the wall.. but how do i learn how to do it without

  • My towel keeps slipping! i nearly broke my violin + i just bought a few days ago.

i still cnt do it rite. hmph.

  • i'm really struggling making the vibrato. it's so damn hard.

  • I mean, How long does it take without shaking and walls before playing Vibrato properly.

(?? sorry for miscommunication cause of my english; actually englsih isn't my first language so;; I just cannot expain exactely what I want to ask)

  • no problem. I was just joking. :P

it depends on how frequence you practise, try not to rely on wall after 1 month. good luck!

  • That is such a helpful suggestion - thanks for posting!!!

  • If I practice this way when can I play without shaking and walls?

    It is really helpful though;

I cannot be always near walls.

  • When you are not near the wall. :)

  • yea but I don't sit by a wall in class:(

  • Do it at home!

  • thnx that was helpful :D

  • O.O

    That helped :)

  • i dont seem to get the idea why some people says its a bad idea. Its one of the great techniques for vibrato PRACTICE not performance. what he did sure is gonna help novices in here.

  • OOh!

thank you very much! is good... for those who are beginning like me !! :D

  • thanks :)

  • YOU'RE MY IDOL!!

  • OMG THANK YOU SOO MUCH!

  • this is an arm vibrato right?

  • ouch..i think my root canal came off

  • I DID use shoulder rest.

  • Comment removed

  • seems you don't understand what we are doing at all. Just forget it if you don't.

  • He's using the towel to show a practice technique.. once you get that done you can do it without the towel and the wall.

  • well the whole point of the exercise is to relax ur muscles and make it used to the movement u r doing

  • This method has been proved the most useful way in training vibrato all over the world. Remember, TRAINING.

  • Hey !!

    Thanks!!

  • BRAVO OMG MY NEW FAVE SONG!

lolz thanx a bunch it really helps my vibratto...which is at nil right now...but you just showed me how! im gonna go try right now.

  • wow it is so annoying if ur a teacher try to do it more pro like cause i can do better then u and i have been playing for 2 yearrs

  • LOL I think its the camcorder, its making the violin sound very whiny. Hes also doing the noob vibrato when you train you do the back and forth up and down sound.

  • I love that piece.

  • great idea :)

  • ...and so musical too!

  • cool idea

  • you are in the right way to a good vibratto... mas I thing that you would pratice this with the violin hold in you neck (sorry about my english xD im a portuguese girl..)

  • foi o "mas I thing" que te denunciou!! hehe

  • How to avoid your neighbours killing you after sending the notes down the wall?

  • lol, nice point

  • Is your violin a De La Croix Violin??? Very simmilar to mine...

  • very good idea

  • hahaha! great information, funny to me for some reason...

  • thanks that helps!

  • muy bueno tu video ,muchas gracias por subirlo,me sirvio,lo q pasa es q si toco sin el vibrato suena medio feo, chau gracias...

  • That's the same way i learned vibrato when i was in HS

  • im sorry but i play a viola cuz i hate high strings... next time can u do it on the g string... or maybe even d

  • violas are awesome =D

  • i cant get it :(

  • Nice violin

  • oh my geese thats awesome im trying to learn but i dont learn until eigth grade :(

  • EmoBloodVideos,

Take my advice and get a private instructor, because an orchestra program that won't teach you this or that until a certain age group or grade defines your ability to age, not YOUR improvement.

  • haha i know :)

  • Yes, as if you would (if you were at all serious about learning the violin) I mean, how did Heifetz ever manage without this hot tip? Why not just learn to play the thing properly?

  • hahaha...

    good idea!!!!

    LOL...

    i think it really works

but, i don't want to practice that way!!!!

    hahahah

    just joking!!!

  • I really need this since that was always my question: How do you play without shaking the violin, and also, how do you keep it from slipping off your shoulder. lol

Great tip! I just hope it works...

    Thank you.

  • hahaha, such a good way! u rock man XD

  • Actually you want the violin to shake when you vibrate. Vibrato in the first place is shaking the instrument to increase the resonance. When you vibrate you are augmenting the vibrations of the instrument. Anything you can do to increase the vibrations of the instrument will increase the resonance of the instrument and add to the overall body of sound. Also your shoulder rest is cutting your tone in half. Read Auer's book.

  • fhesi3 is correct. y give a negative for his comment? also dont press the scroll against the wall unless you have a wasted cheap instrument!

  • Stop killin' my cat! J/k! (What, I don't even have a cat)

I NEVER thought to put the scroll against the wall. Thank you!

  • I agree with you. It also sounds like he needs to tune his violin.

  • i did this myself to avoid shaking

but any how thanks for video

  • i always use no sponge i perfer not to use one i usaualy get it to stay on by useing a small towel or an alastic =]

  • nice noise! lol! thanx 4 the idea

  • Sounds like the murder scene from Psycho...yea u all know the one, lol. What an interesting idea though, would have never thought of it.

  • ME oew Me oew oew oew oew oew lol jk jk thanks for tips!!!

  • yeah, it works but, my arms are killing me from carrying the wall everywhere I play.

  • ahahahahhehehehehahahhahehehe

    :D

    gonna try it though :)

  • sounds like a screaming cat

  • @MagicPiano22 This is why they made violin strings out of catgut.

  • What an EXCELLENT Idea! My violin shakes all the time. lol I guess I'm not alone on that.

And how do you keep it under your chin without slipping? I bought the chin rest, but that's too bulky, so I use a soft sponge. lol I would prefer nothing, but how do you keep the violin from slipping from under your chin?

    :0/

    Thanks!

    :0)

  • maybe you are not relax enough, try relax your shoulder and move your left arm horizontally. hope this help.

  • it does feel bulky at first try it out for a week and see if u feel better after that... it simply feels bulky cause ur probably not use to it yet

  • you guys...

this is an exercise! it's supposed to be slowed down so that you can see what's happening!

  • great idea! cuz mine always shakes like crazzzzzzzy cuz i am not that good yet!

  • Question is the arm suppose to move that much?

  • no not at all. that is a vibrato excersice. this vid isn't the best to learn off of but it might help to practice against a wall like that

  • ok.........

  • aww.......

  • wow you're slow. It's to help get the feel in your joints of your fingers. >_>

  • I'm not slow. I just happen to know that this practice technique increases stiffness in the neck. It is better to practice as relaxed as one is going to perform, not to push your violin into a wall and get a false sense of security that is lost in performance.

  • Actually I tried it and it doesn't cause stifness to the neck, at least for me. And in 9th grade my Orchestra teacher made all the kids do it. If anything it makes you more relaxed because there is more force in the wall, so there should be no need to "push". Just let you're body drop and relax.

  • I am speaking english, right? I'll repeat. "false sense of security," "lost in performance," "no walls to play against in concert." There is almost no translation in feeling from this false exercise to actual playing. Some nerd who grew up playing too many scales and not performing came up with this exercise.

  • You can think what you want to think and they can think what they want. The point of this exercise is for you to master vibrato more naturally. My god.

  • id love to play but im afraid id press my chin in to hard causing the body of the violin to smash, not only breakin it it would thrust the string into my face, forever blinding me.

i watch final destination to much, but you get my point?

  • lol nice

  • oh maybe i"ll try that thank you

  • U are really a good teacher~

  • Bah. If you move your wrist right all you have to do to avoid shaking is have a shoulder rest. I've been playing Viola for 18 weeks and I can play Vibrato without using andthing but my wrist, bow and shoulder rest. This is a good way to try it. But in concert you can't do that. o_O;

  • wrist is the way to go.

moving your arm is a really bad way to do vibrato..... u'd get some funky vibrato.

  • niiiiiice!

  • good

  • ey7saoHIOUEhsauioHueioasHUIOehasUIOHUio

    awesome!

    thanks man

    heauisOIUEhasiUOHEuioashuioeahsUI

  • how do you vibrate with the whole arm? i have to use my wrists only to avoid violin shaking

  • oh cool. My teacher mentioned it too.

  • thanks man....

  • uh, idk if that would be such a good idea, it could possibly damage the neck of the instrument by bending it, like if you were to slip or put too much pressure on it.

  • I love this tune. What is it?

  • omg

  • lol!

  • ROFLMFAO!!!!! xD It wasn't a tune, it was a demonstration!

  • ^.^ oooooooh graciass!

  • At last I will to learn to practice vibrato. Thanks a lot.

  • hey my teacher tuaght me that i think ill try it now

  • ohhh finally I found somebody who learn very clear and in a easy way, how to play the vibrato .... many thanks, you're rock ¡¡¡

  • thanks =)

  • now i see... thats how vibrato was done...

  • Use less force to press the string.

  • thanks for the adivise/advice hehehehe

  • tnx ^

  • It sounds so strange but so cool

  • good concept. thanks for sharing your knowledge.

others would comment on this technique but never showed it. its great that you showed all.

  • look like a good exercise..
