  • This sounds a lot more different than the other Dark Stars. Is this still in mixolydian? Something sounds more minor to me. What chords?

  • excellent

  • After listening to 'Live Dead's vinyl version and revering it for 40 + years, to find this throwaway shorter exploration, it's a revelation. Conclusion: Put Up Everything ya got, please & thanks.

  • for some reason i like this better when im not high.

  • @PetersJunta me too. i actually feel that way now about a lot of music. you dont have to be stoned outta your skull to enjoy the gratefuldead thats for sure

  • @snapman801 totally agree

  • @PetersJunta Same here. I've come to realize that most music is better when I'm not stoned. I haven't smoked pot in over 2 years and my life is much easier without it.

  • I was born in the town this was recorded... I'm assuming this was at the Capitol Theatre...

I actually worked some shows there in the early 90's, setting up amps and lights and stuff like that. All for a few bucks and a backstage pass. We had Indigo Girls, Phish, Little Feat, George Clinton, Danzig, Ice-T and many others when I was working there. But I'd trade all that in to have seen the Dead there in 1971 - but then, who wouldn't?

  • @sex6cult9revolution Hey you saw some great shows I bet!!! Phish - Little Feat!!! In college I set up for shows in the early 70's. Early Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana, John Mayall. Good times.

  • nothing like these boyz.

  • this song can`t swing around a dark star !!!

  • buen viaje gracias..

  • hahahaha, Love the space graphics

  • AW! No Augest West?!?!?!?!?!?

  • DeadFriends, you are invited to enjoy a unique, in-depth master class on the original Dark Star off Live/Dead. Concentration is placed on exploring the individual and group improv concepts that are used to create this masterpiece of improvisation. You'll DIG this, promise:)

Open a box of wine, type in "Dave Frank" Dark Star on YouTube:)

  • i got this on cassette tape and i didn't even listen to it. i do miss half of my life now.

  • i'm so hungry right now

  • The spiral at the beginning, and especially at 4:30, looks exactly like the Norway Spiral dimensional portal, or whatever the heck it was.

    Awesome Darkstar.

  • Just what the doctor ordered......... yay!!!

Does anyone know,is that Tom Constanten on the keys?

  • @rainbowkeys711 Nope, it's not TC. He'd been out of the band for just over a year at the time of this recording.

  • this blows my mind. long live the dead

  • This music reminds me so much of the Quincy and Hayes pot parties at Ohio State, circa '87

  • pazzi!:)

  • bedlaka doesn't like comments, so I'll have to post here,

consider well, the logic in an argument where anybody

delivers their opinion and then blocks their opponent

from delivering a rebuttal.... whats going on around here?

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar jerry is using here? sometimes throughout the song it sounds like it could be a gibson sg and other times it sounds like a strat to me...he started using strats around this time period, but its hard for me to tell.

either way, gotta love that sound.

  • @beefcakepanyhose Looking at a pic of 2-18-71 though it looks like "Natural 57 Fender Strat "

  • @beefcakepanyhose oh yes, the strat, which I found interesting, as well..

  • @beefcakepanyhose Is a lover guitar, my friend.

  • @beefcakepanyhose _ Fender Strat

  • My Birthday - 2/18

  • this song connects me to a state of peace that is indescribable. I can honestly go anywhere with this tune playing. This song should set the pace of everyday life. The instruments speak in voices that are unlike any other. No band ever will capture the serenity that the grateful dead did with this song. Dead for life.

  • I went to Dark Star and all I got was some crazy Star Wars garbage. Thank Astarte that I found this.

  • jerry fucking garcia

  • scary thing is this isn't the best dark star out there. and this is sick

  • greatest song in the universe

aliens jam out and toke herb to this song

  • Bobby was an awesome rhythm guitarist. If given a second role he was, then he blew the envelope out at every opportunity...

  • This type of laid back space-jam goes really well with the chosen images. Excellent job, gratefulvideo.

  • 5 pathetic losers spend their days cruising YouTube, looking for videos that nobody else has voted down.

  • For those that are confused, there many jams that were thrown in the middle of dark star. Some were used frequently, some were not, all were incredible. Dark Star was a platform to launch off of, it started out a song and ended up with some great jamming or in something sounding like space. I suggest 9/19/70, listen to that dark star it is incredible.

  • Most beautiful guitar piece ever played. No one else comes close.

  • Have always loved this...

  • Hi you can also get the full length version 22 mins. of this on "Live Dead" circa 1969 on Warner brothers records Luuve the video thanks.

  • for those who disliked this, there may be no hope for you... LOL

  • Great job here, it's akmost how I picture this jam in my head...Peace man

  • this makes me orgasm

  • grandiosi!

  • I always heard Garcia was blazing on this tune..

  • What is there to say about this? Absolutely nothing. Just feel and flow and be glad that beautiful things exist in this world ^_^

  • Damn I love Dark Star. (and pretty sweet the Dark Star > Wharf Rat > Dark Star. Way to break a song for the first time boys.

  • this "beautiful jam" is played with a little more refinement on dicks picks volume 2 from 10/31/71 - in my opinion it is one of those chords progressions i wish they would have ALWAYS played...

  • No shrooms required IMHO

  • this is dope

  • @bigjesse82 Does anyone know how I can smoke this video maaaaan?

  • yeah, i like the dead. so fucking what!

  • I just tried to post another comment questioning this song. So, is this a part of dark star, or is beautiful jam it's own individual song? cause it sounds like dark star, and I thought beautiful jam was it's own too. haha it be sweet if someone could fill me in :] Thanks! i love them soo much. if only i could have been around then!

  • @WharfRat44

The second part of this video ( 5:19 ) is on the Grateful Dead Boxset CD 2 labeled as Beautiful Jam. It is nestled between Wharf Rat and Dark Star on the setlists, This video cuts out just before the final verse of Dark Star is sung. I don't think the Dead played Beautiful Jam as it is here ever again but am not 100% sure. Hope that helps.

  • @gratefulvideo Omgosh, you totally did help me out!! Thanks for responding!! :D :D :D hope all is beautiful, i loovee this song!! :)

  • @gratefulvideo I agree with you. I think this was just a random jam - I don't know if it was something they worked on, or improvised, or what, but it isn't like some of the other jams like 'mind left body' 'seastones' 'mud buddy' etc as far as I know. I'd REALLY like to know the story behind this.

  • @WharfRat44 no i think they are saying this is a beautiful jam but it is totally dark star!!

  • @durden1771 Yeah, grateful video said they coined it a beautiful jam. it does sound of a dark star vibe, i'm not really too worried about the name. it really is beautiful either way.

  • @WharfRat44

yo dark star is a song.

  • spontaneous moment of blinding brilliance... as usual : )

  • DARK STAR is like the River Ganges... Every once in a while, one needs to immerse him/herself in it completely... It's a cleansing return to the Source and brings the soul back to its original Essence...

Me think how long i've felt this way about it...

Well, you count! It's been since 1976.

  • Our eternal essence continues onto and into the one and eternal essence in which all living forms are. religion, philosophy and theory's are all inadequate in size to the real and forever lasting energy of You, yourself, and I in which is "god" or whomever or whatever you believe in. we are all one and forever shall be as one. if we can all love each other for who we are we shall forever live in peace and tranquility. break free from the illusion and continue on through your journey.

  • This is too funny! I hadn't read your comment before i posted mine. Great minds do think alike i guess huh . Very cool :-)

  • im baked and this is sweet

  • the itunes thing says it's on 19th of feb. 1971

  • ya i am on shrooms and this is intense very beautiful

  • im not in the state of mind for this

  • my foot bit me.

  • @finsburyparksk8er hahahahahahah

  • The Grateful Dead is an interesting band. They're like a bridge. I know some hip hop fans who will talk about the music they like, listing all these hip hop stars, and then throw the Grateful Dead in there. It's the same way with people who listen to classical music. They'll say "Bach, Chopin, The Grateful Dead, Motzart". There's just something about their sound that appeals to all these different groups of people.

  • @BrokenChair88 i have these guys on some of my playlists with Slayer. you speak the truth.

  • I have a good friend who listens to alot of metal, and death metal and etc,, I've been trying forever to find the right song to get him to listen to, any you'd suggest?

  • I don't know man either you feel it or you don't man like I listen to slayer and metallica and Amon Amarth witch falls into the category of your freind but then i listen to this stuff and classic rock too so i mean either he likes it or not man

  • very true comment. My music is classical, of course Jazz and Flamenco, but enjoy the Dead recording Anthem of the Sun.

  • I can relate to that. I love listening to and playing classical and jazz, but there is just something about the Grateful dead that is almost indescribable, which makes me love them just as much and at times even more. I think the best music is that which cannot be described in terms of a traditional "style." I think the Grateful Dead fall into that category. They were their own style.

  • @BrokenChair88 your looking at a reggae/hip-hop man who loves this band too! :)

  • Yes, The Grateful Dead is a very interesting band, very god.

  • Ver god indeed! ;-)

  • @BrokenChair88 Pink Floyd wrote dogs

  • Why do people keep on finding me out?!?!

  • grateful for all that you have given us dark star flashes in my mind sending me spiraling joyfully knowing you jerry are watching down jammin the heavens above one day we'll walk through the ramblin roses scarlet begonias china cats perched up on the mountains of the moon...

  • fuck ya.

  • I can't find my feet.

  • well they didnt just get up and walk away

  • wahoo!

  • The Gospel according to Jerry...ahhhhhhhh

  • so psychedelic

  • more bands should allow taping by fans

  • im really bumed i missed out on the dead but at the same time im blessed to be able to listen to it now great vid great jam !

  • it´s feel so good listen this song!
