A Grabby Ratty

I noticed that the one rat in the video, the one white one, had it's head kind of tilted to the side. I have a rat that does that and it only started about 6 months ago. Any ideas on what this might be? I wondered if maybe when she was sleeping under her water bottle maybe she got water in her ear and it did something to her eardrum or something? She does just fine, just always has her head tilted slightly to the side.

@611acook That's called head tilt. It is usually caused by an inner ear infection. If you get it treated immediately, the head may correct itself and go back to normal but after 6 months it's probably too late. It would be a good idea though to bring her to the vet to get antibiotics to treat any infection remaining. The rat in the video, House, came to us that way. We treated him but he had been titly for far too long to help him.

@ARmandaLO that will be hard to stop them do. It is marking. Some rats significantly reduce this when neutered.

@ARmandaLO well they do that because if you get another rat it will tell that rat this is my human.you can not train a rat not to do this.it is a normal thing my rats before they passes marked there territory and my other rat would not go on that part of me if bell my rat marked her territorry there.i wish they wouldn't do that also but all rats do it even females

Approximately how much was it to spay your rats. I hear it lowers their chance for mammory tumors recently we found one of my rats had a tumor so we're considering a rat wide spaying

@taerazebra It depends with every vet. I've seen some people pay less than $100 for a spay. My vet charges $250 but she's an excellent exotic vet and worth every penny.

It really does lower the incidence of mammary tumours. In 27 girls, only 1 developed a mammary tumour.

To get the tumor removed on my lil girl it'll cost 400 dolllars she is only 9 months old and has a tumor eeep! I gotta check with my vet she is nice and all but I think her prices are a bit steep but If she's good I would rather go there it's just tough :S

@taerazebra It's really hard to deal with, they say rats are a cheap animal but they aren't... very expensive at the vet. If you do have the tumour removed, I recommend you get her spayed at the same time.

I noticed the grabby ratty has a head tilt. Im fostering a girl with this and she has been on antibiotics which did help a little but nothing very impressive. She isnt getting worse but it looks more severe than your boy's. If she gets scared she will lose control of her head tilting and flip her body around the catch up again : ( Is this something you have found any of your rats can adjust to well?

I've had a few tilty rats and they do adjust amazingly well. Give her some time. What they do need is small boxes like cereal boxes, if they feel a ceiling, then they know what is up and what is down. If she becomes agitated simply put your hand over her head, once she feels a ceiling, she'll calm down.

Did I hear that naughty little tyke squeak when you tried to take the lid away?  Hahahaha!

One of my PEW boys from Clark developed a headtilt, it hasn't gone away after the antibiotics but that is pretty normal. I wonder if PEW's are prone to them more than others? Many titly rats seem to be PEW's, and two of my three total were PEW's.
