The Celtics and Pistons had hall of fame players and coaches in the 80s while MJ didn't have neither until 1990. Isiah isn't no where near MJ, hell, Isiah had said plenty of times MJ is the greatest! Guys get suspended for fights now, in the 80's they just got pulled apart. Kareem and Russel are head and shoulders better than Jordan in just about every way you can name a stat. Isiah Thomas is hypercompetitive--to the point where it is self-destructive. That trait served him exceptionally well as a player, but crippled him as a coach and as a human being.
I loved watching Isiah Thomas play. He was the best ballhandler of his time AND he could shoot AND he could lead AND he could pass.
But he played in the eras of Earvin Johnson and Michael Jordan . . ..

First off, during the 80's and early 90's when the real competition was playing like Bird, Magic, Isiah, and Jordan, nobody even thought of John Stockton aside from an all-star game. It was only after all those greats got old that you saw Stockton arise in the mid and late 90's when only Jordan was left in the East and Stockton would still get beat in the first round until 97. Why couldn't Stock' elevate past Jordan? Thomas did. Please!

That's stupid. Stockton was one of the best players in this decade. He is a little bit younger than Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas but Stockton leads the league in assists and steals. Let me remind all of you that immediately after naming Stockton to the Olympic team (and I mean the next day), Isiah gave him 40+. No one was a better player under 6'1". Isiah is the best Piston ever! If anyone questions Isiah you need look no further than Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals. He destyroyed them on one leg! The best little man ever!
