Nope, it wasn't just you. When I first heard the story about the balloon flying around with some kid feared to be inside, I took it at face value. But then when I saw the parents' reaction to his discovery in the attic, I knew almost immediately it had to be a big setup. I would love to know what acting school they went to. I feel as though the parents staged the whole thing as a publicity stunt. The father seems like he could be an intelligent individual if it weren't for his lack of common sense... and the mother appears to be strongly influenced by her husband. The entire family is being negatively portrayed due to the poor judgment of the father.
