There is a difference between an orchestra and a marching band just like some people like Barry Manilow and others like Ozzy Ozbourne. I love the energy and they look like they are really enjoying the music and not just playing a rehearsed piece. Go watch the movie Drumline or the halftime show at the next Grambling Vs. Southern football game and you will see a performance.

It's obvious that you're still in high school. High school bands do contests where quality of sound, formations and general effect is always harped on. When you reach the college level, you will notice that the style of performance changes drastically -- some bands DO keep the corps style, most go for the entertainment value.

Trust me, most of the members of the 110 participate in DCI. The style is different, but that does not mean the individuals are not good musicians overall

Yes, I used to participate in solo and ensemble. My high school had a lack-luster band program, but it still produced good musicians. I was fortunate to have good mentors in percussive arts, even though I'll probably still never be as good as they are :)
