Nuthin that woman can do to stop this one. Besides, she got outta him what she set after- and that was her career. That's all she wanted him for- to further her career, and she wasn't settling for a live in relationship. I am happy though that he got Jesse Belle out of the deal....she was his heart's dream. RIP John, you are missed by so many!!! And yeah I think it's a great song to his ex... she deserves that and more. I think they call these kinds of women "Gold Diggers", if I'm not mistaken?
I had this song downloaded on Napster , years ago, but, when our PC died ( virus !!!) I thought I'd lost it . . .but NO !! Hoorah. . .So, I'm gonna send it to my ex. . .I'm sure he'll love it. . .the cheating S.O.A.B lol .He loves Meatloaf, so he's got crap taste in music, and the one he left me for. . .has left him for a vet ha ha, and she and I are the best of friends. He has got GREAT taste in woman. . . for you Steph :) xx
Funny song here. John Denver's death is one of many reasons why, if a plane is too small to have a couple of stewardesses on it, I'm not stepping aboard, thank you. No toy plane, no celeb pilot. I want to live.
@musicmandon1 JD was a VERY experienced pilot- he had years of flying experience in many types of planes from Lears to experimentals like the EZ. THAT'S the hardest part of the whole thing- he KNEW he should have put gas in the plane or had it done for him but he didn't AND igonored 2 other test pilots warnings to get the gas switch changed before flying it- had nothing to do with a small plane-if it's a commercial jet and they don;t put enough fuel in it- it's going to crash as well!
Like all those old country songs that explained it completely: "How Can You Believe Me When I Told You That I Loved You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life"
@pjt614 I don't see HOW she would have been able to!! Her name is not mentioned in the song even though ANYONE who knows anything about their split would immediately know who the song is for!! He sang this song in fact up to the end at his final concerts right before the crash so Ms Delaney would not have any legal basis to prohibit him from sining it whenever he wanted.to. No basis for that rumor I would say although I am sure she would have wanted to if she could.
@puck57 She probably wanted the residuals more than anything!!! There is a legal way to make him stop – but she’d have lost!! It is the "law of inference"!!! In other words – who else would he be singing this to (could be someone else)!!! It is when there is only 1 possibility – then the law of inference is used. But he could have been singing that to anyone. If he mentions that she WAS his LAST wife – THEN he’d be in trouble – he only had 1 LAST wife on earth!!!
I'm sorry, that Song of Don Bruns is a nice one too, but the song, John Denver was singing, was his own production. He did the lyrics and the music! He wrote it, when he was on the road, presenting his biography. On this tour, he heard of a book, writen by a Woman, which was titled like that. And he was just 'a little bit'' angry about his devorce of his 2nd wife - and the quarrel the two of them had about theyr daughter, about money and so on...'Kissing You Goodbye' was the result of that!
On the Harbor Lights Album where this is featured he makes the comment about "don't think this song has any personal relevance"- NO- just because it was written shorlly after his 2nd divorce!! And he makes reference to Sen Bob Packwood. There is a 2nd verse on YT under "Kissing you Goodby"- you will see it- it has three versions and the middle version is the Harbor L. version which is the longest and best. Make NO mistake Cassandra Delaney was very much in his thoughts with this song.
I only had the opportunity to attend 1 of his concerts before he died (Boise, Idaho 1992), he had a lot of "politically imperfect" material he performed that night, this wasn't one of them! :-)
I first heard this song during the first and only time I got to see JD in concert, just a year before he died. The crowd's response of silence followed by hysterical laughing was priceless....He was so fabulous and genuine...I'm grateful I got to see him live, even if it was only once...
From the latest live album "John Denver- In Concert" there is a live recording from Wolf Trap, I believe. After the rendition, he promptly (and surely sarcasticly) states "Now, I dont want y'all to think that came out of any personal experience!"
Shortly thereafter, he ponders "I wonder if we'll ever get that on the radio...I dont know!"
Those comments of his are (also) on the Harbor Lights Concert live album, taped fall of 1995. He also makes a funny jab how this song could be sent to (then scandalized) Senator Bob Packwood...
@Surfertree Kinda late to reply but couldn't resist. That was JD for you ya. If he found a story/joke/comment the audience liked you KNEW you'd hear it again....and again. There were some of his stories I think I could recite along with him. But never once did I grow tired of hearing them. Sure wish we were still hearing them. I SOOO miss his concerts. They were food for my soul!
whoops sorry arlenenoone, just went to reply to you comment and hit the remove by mistake, sorry, yes you are right i have put the wrong title up, the song is called, kissing you goodbye.
He sang this song at his concert in Dublin Ireland and everyone just cracked up with laughter, guess no one expected the punchline..very funny then and now. Delighted to hear it again. thanks.
I would ASSUME he is thinking about who the song was written for- his former second wife Cassandra Delaney- this was written about her after they split.
wow I can't belive that that they look so much alike wow! I loved both of them they were my idols! RIP both of them! Are you a fan of both of them or just one of them?
I made the connection of John Denver and Steve Irwin looking alike a long time ago, and your the first person who I ever saw mention it too. I love them both. Miss you John, thanks for sharing your gift. What an Angel.
Surely they can remix this and add it to a future JD album of his hits as an extra. Of course it was written for the train-wreck from Australia he was married to. Wonderful song - as all of his were. Miss you John.
Never heard this song before...one does not expect the funny ending...hilarious, who would think of ending a song with "Get your tongue out of my mouth 'cause I'm kissing you goodbye"...Loved it!
This appears to be on Charles Grodin's talk show that he had in 1996 according to the imdb. JD looks like he did about that time. Grodin is the one with black hair, and Carl Reiner is the older man.
all this time I thought I heard every JD song he ever recorded and still another one pops up, thank you so much. I have been to 7 JD concerts. Did you see him when he did "A Man and His Music" he didn't have his band with him. awesome. Just him on the stage. Just the best.
I was fortunate to have attended 6 or 7 John Denver concerts. The last one was a night in November 1996 in San Antonio. He sang this song that evening, and the audience burst out in uproarious laughter. It's one of many dear memories of John I'll cherish forever. Thank you, PoetryMaster, for posting this.
WOW, to have seen him SO many times!!! He performed near where I have lived in 3 different cities, every place was packed, rockin', everybody singing, dancing, screaming just so swept up. But 6 0r 7 concerts!! FAR OUT!!!

I had a picture of John Denver up in my cubicle when I was working a couple years ago and everyone thought it was Steve Irwin.
Some coincidence too, Steve Irwin was working with Coustou's son on the newer version of Calypso, when he was killed by the Sting Ray.
