Its Not A Cicada Killer Wasp Just a Cicada Killer Its Mixed With One But Thts Not Its name and cicadas and cicada kiillers are to different bugs its carrying a cicada
@dabykid It's called a cicada killer wasp and you can look it up. The genus is Sphecius and there are more than a dozen species in it. The wasps prey upon cicadas (cicadomorpha) -as seen in the video. The specimen in the video appears to be an Eastern cicada killer (sphecius speciosus).
These Wasps are dangerous to humans! when I was 12 yrs old, I was stung and paralized by one, and forced to live underground in its burrow for 30 years.
I can't wait until later this month when they come out and wipe out a bunch of these damned cicadas. Damned things are thick this year, won't leave me alone when I'm weed eating.
These insects are pretty common where I live. They still scare the shit out of me. I remember seeing a cicada killer wasp that killed a june bug and had to crawl up a big oak tree with it. Have been scared of them ever since. Just recently found one flying around in the hallway of my apartment. I think it was male, and I know they can't sting...but nevertheless, they are frightening creatures when pissed off.
@jetfreak4 - agreed jet freak! There is a magnolia next door that TEEMS with cicada's in late August. I heard these 'killers' lay their eggs in the cicada and the the larvae eat the cicada from within. Who knows - they make my skin crawl, regardless. I think it's human instinct to detest the sound or sight of stinging insects. Natural defense response..............
they are 1-5/8 in. long and only sting when they have a cicada or you are poking at there nest and have a very toxic sting but they are not aggressive and her sting instantly paralysis to her cicada friend rare to see her bring it to her nest good timing
Among the strongest of insects and likely the strongest flier in the world. As to reports of its sting; yes, they are among the least aggressive of wasps; but reports do conflict as to pain. Easiest time to get stung is when it's dragging cicada. See? Its venom has largely been depleted. Taking a sting at that time is no true measure of what it can do. I've read several reports of horrific pain and one that lasts up to a week. Sting site also matters as to pain. Just leave them alone.
LOL I'am an exterminator in west point millitary academy my cor actually took his shirt off and laid down on the ground amongst their nesting site just to prove to a resident that they are docile. I can understand the panic from some people they are pretty freaky.
Just enjoy them. Cicada killers are not harmful. The males "buzz" you and dive bomb like Dauntless dive bombers but cannot sting. The females can sting but just don't unless you step on one. A very VERY modest stinging hazard. Take the opportunity and watch them bring Cicadas. It's quite rewarding.
We have a lot of these guys, just recently! I've lived in my area all my life and have just started seeing these guys. I was walking under my tree and i heard a thunk behind me (thought it was my sister throwing a baseball) and the wasp was killing the cicada. She flew away when I got close but I saw a small little round egg (i think that's what it was anyway) under the little belly slots of the cicada. Really cool wasps, they are none aggressive and try to stay out of the way.
Cicada killers are not harmful and it takes considerable effort to get a female to sting. They look nasty and are BIG but otherwise a lot of hot air. Their sting is less nasty than the common yellow jacket Vespid. They are non-aggressive towards humans and are beneficial. No need to fear these large wasps.
I use to catch those wasps in Pensacola 1978 when I was 5. I'd put a jar over their burrow and when they'd fly up into it I'd slip the lid under and on.
me to there nest looks like an anthill so if you see a huge pile of dirt get rid of it trust me one stung me holy shit worse than getting 30 shots+an IV
hell yeah dude, me and my brother were refinishing our deck this summer and found a bunch of em...baseball bats or broom sticks make for fun disposal though
There's one in a little tunnel in the corner of my house. I saw it drag a cicada in there a couple of days ago. After it rained a bunch last night, I walked to the back this morning and it was on the ground and unable to fly. I figured it nearly drowned. I used a stick to pick it up. The video doesn't do it justice as far as its size. When it was cleaning itself towards the tail, I saw the stinger come out and poison shot out nearly two inches behind it. It left a puddle nearly an inch across.
Some sites say the sting is fairly weak. Be advised they are on an agenda or are lying. "Simon & Schuster's Guide to Insects," 1981, profile #294 Cicada Killer, states---"The females are said to have one of the most severe sting of any insect." You'll do as well to be hit by a tarantula hawk. But sting site matters also. Most dangerous site? The eyeball and it has happened. Cicada killers won't sting unless provoked or stepped on. They lack evil temper of the wicked red wasps.
those things used to scare the b' jesus out of me! They are truely amazing though. If you were to scale their flying and lifting ability it would be like a Boeing 737 towing a DC10
this is the exact thing they were doing in my backyard yesterday right before the sun went down. They go underground at night!! These things are huge but didnt seem aggressive at all
Accounts vary greatly on the sting. Only fact I believe is they're much less aggressive than red wasps. One has it the sting is weak, but was that measured after it shot its load into a cicada? Another account claims it has "one of the most severe sting of any insect." Based on size, that could be correct. Not many want to take a sting to see which claim is fact. Another fact not in dispute is this wasp is a VERY strong flier---maybe the strongest flier in the whole insect world.
Luckily according to wildlife experts they don't sting humans. The only time a sting was accounted on human beings was when somebody grabbed one and another time when one was stomped on. So they only sting humans to defend themselves.
damn nature, u scary

i just watched the same thing happen outside my front door.
i read that the males don't have stingers and the females do but don't usually use them on people.
what a relief!

The bug it has was a "cicada" a large grasshopper like insect. Which also gives the wasp it's name because they tend to be it's favourite.
