Lovely song, to be sure, but I have to say that I don't think this guy has the best vocal range for the song. He really strikes me as tenor or higher baritone, and the part's written for a lower baritone, or perhaps a bass. It's a great song, though.
@thenextbookworm If I'm right (and I'm pretty sure I am), it's the note at the end of the world 'shelter' near the beginning (I'm crap with time stamps, so can't provide one - sorry).
@mellojellobonbello Okay, I know where you're talking about, it just sounds to me like the volume and ease dropped off at that note, sounding like he's pushing the limits of his range. It just reminds me of how my voice sounds when I try to sing the lowest notes I'm capable of. I do love the song though!
This is probably the only the song that can almost always bring tears to my eyes, especially when Jesse sings it it's so sad and powerful and the entire cast puts so much emotion into it. Jonathan Larson sure knew how to write a song.
I want to find and kill the one person who dislikes this. How dare they???!!!
I was Collins in my school's musical.. We brought in about $10,000 and put half of all profits to various charitys.. That whole musical was nothing short of a blessing, and i wouldn't be as dedicated to music as i am now if it weren't for RENT.
@QuitiaMoore1 It's neither. It's the same male and female soloists that are in seasons of love. They are just two members of the chorus. Watch the recording of rent on broadway and you'll see. It's not like the film.
@QuitiaMoore1@jUaOsHiKi no, it isn't Benny... I'm pretty sure it's the unnamed soloist who sings the guy solo in Seasons of Love. You know, the same guy who's always in the Christmas Bells are ringing parts... :)
everytime i watch this scene in the movie i cry so much because jesse l martin is soo emotional. i didnt think someone could put that much emotion into their vocals until i heard this
every time i watch the movie i cry at this seen. it's so sweet. and i love his vocals in this part exspecialy when the chorus cuts out and he sings "When your heart has expired" that's my favorite part of the whole movie.
I believe Jesse L Martin does the best rendition of this song. So many other people try to make the song about how much vocal gymnasts they can do verses the pure emotional connection with what just happened in the show. I rather hear the song simply done with strong emotional connection then to hear how many runs a guy can do with his voice.
Although i agree with you statement about Jesse L Martin doing the best rendition of this song, Michael McElroy did a great emotional version as well. and I agree with what you say, im glad im not the only one who thinks that way.
@JLRisby The guy we've got in our version does a very nice version. he's got a deeper voice but the way the back up singers sing is a lot more composed and it feels a lot more like a wall of emotion than this recording. Granted, I may be bias XD
I think what it really boils down to is not the fact that they were the originals (although that may be part of it) but considering that they all lived through Jonathan's death and still performed after he died. I think that is what truly connected them and what created this passion and emotion that is so poignant in this particular song. All I must say is, Brava.
I cry everytime. I've seen the show six times and the movie more times than I can count a total rent head. I know it's coming and I still cry. and it's not cute. Not like the wipe the tears from the corner of your eye crying. Full on weeping.
Rent is the best musical i have ever seen.......this song is soo emotional especially, "When your heart has expired!" i always get teary eyed when i hear that. and i absolutely love this song and the whole musical in general
For anyone who has ever experienced the genuine, raw feeling of true love... This is so hard to listen to without really breaking down. This is so passionate and heartfelt. Jesse is a fantastical actor and an unbelievable vocalist. <3 R.I.P Johnathan
Out of every Collins i've heard, Jesse is still the only one who does it justice. And I'm not just saying that because he is the original. It's because it's true. No one else can do it right.
I completely agree. Jesse *is* Collins. Period. Others can't even begin to compare. Jesse is still the only one who can make me cry while listening to this.
I have to agree there, I don't think anyone else but Jesse would ever be able to sing this song with so much emotion.
It's like that with all of them though, they've been the character so long and the cast became so close its hard to belevie anyone else could ever replace them, plus their connection and hardtimes just come out through their music and make it even better.
They made Rent into a movie after its phenomenal success as a Broadway show, so that everybody could enjoy the genius of Jonathon Larson and the beautiful story of Rent
its a AMAZING broadway show that stopped after 12 years.....if u even Look at the title it says 1996 OBC recording...the movie came out in 2006 and OBC means original broadway cast
This is an incredible scene on stage. Heartwrenching. However, I don't care for this version. It seemed very rushed. You can put in so much more raw emotion when you slow it down. Jesse is the best Collins, though.
true... this scene almost made me cry, and Im not a crier though (even though this past week Ive crying a lot) and my eyes got a little watery. And YES Jesse is the best Collins ever I wish I saw him in the show too
This song is amazing... i just saw rent live in st. louis over the weekend and it was fantastic... i would highly recomend it to any1... if to people that dont think they would like it.
I saw it in St. Louis last wednesday; it was my first time seeing it all the way through and I adored every minute of it. I almost cried at this part, in fact.
oh my god, i know. I usually can't take this scene, it makes me cry so hard, and not just because I'm an Angel fangirl. Jesse's performance in this was incredible, and it's just heartbreaking.
A good friend of mine is in college and she couldnt come back to see me and my friends preform a play we were doing so we called her, put her on speaker phone and sang this to her. 20 choir geeks singing this song impromptu. it was beautiful, and we made her cry
No. Jesse is singing here. He's in both the movie and the OBC.
All of the people in the movie were in the Broadway production except Rosario Dawson and Tracie Thoms. In the Broadway Production of Rent, Daphne Rubin-Vega played Mimi and Freddi Walker played Joanne.
I cannot begin to explain how suprised I was to find out that was Det. Green from Law and Order. I was like, "Holy Shit! Det. Green's got some pipes!" What a voice!
This songs means a lot to me and some of my friends. Dec. 8th 2008 we lost a very close friend and my best friend lost her gf. To us, we all feel like we live the life shown in RENT. We laugh together, cry together, and live for each other. RENT was her favorite! She'd give anything to go see it just one more time. This song was played at our friends funeral, and like in the movie, we all stood there and sang. We're going to miss you Sarah Elizabeth Wells. Rest in peace dear. 11/15/87-12/09/08

Jesse's voice is so amazing. God, you can just feel the pain. This is, hands down, my favorite song from the show or the movie.

My fiance and I are planning to use this for our first dance. I wanted the original one, but he wanted a slow dance. We've settled on this.
