  • I'm gonna attempt to learn hungover.

  • you look you having fun while you making the video thats the spirit!! thanks for all your Tutorial cheers from libya.

  • this is just plain confusing ?

  • Speed is an somewhat confusing because it affects both the pitch and tempo. A song could have a very high pitch but very low tempo.

Starting off, it sounds like we're talking about going to a song with a higher tempo, but the rest of this focuses on matching the pitch of the first song to that of the next. Without master tempo, both the pitch and tempo increases. Even if the pitch is matched, the tempo might not be. Presumably that's covered by beatmatching?

    Anyone else see the confusion?

  • I've been loving ellaskins tutorials, but this one was rather confusing, and even more so when one actually understands the music theory. As some people have noted, but far fewer than I expected, the track was increased by a tone or semitone, not an octave (which would be crazy; exactly double the speed).

It sounds like the point of this video isn't about the speed of the toon, but mixing between toons in different keys. It'd be nice if I had some more characters to comment on the confusion.

  • dont wanna here jokes dude cmon

  • @Graffitidur here....come one man. "cmon"

  • HAHAHAHAHA NICE 1 BRO

  • dont get the bit about the octaves, the song is only moving up by a whole step..

  • You are the Best, i learn many things with your videos (only my english is bad as bevor i watch them) :D

  • Your a leggend :-)

  • and if there are vocals that will clearly sound distorted?

  • You are too humble saying your not the best, but you are one of the best.

  • If you want to go from 120 to 130 and the 130 track has vocals at the cue point and the 120 which is playing is mainly instrumental then increase the speed of the track playing slowly up to 130 and then mix the next track in as normal

  • a little bit of humor xP nice and videos are really helping!!!!

  • So, just bump it up an octave? Still kinda confused.

  • I do have a small tip if you want to get to a faster bpm.... But it norally takes a few records to do it. First you start at lets say 115bpm and you want to get to let's say 130bpm. Now my little tip is.... To build it up over time.

So, you would start at 115... Build that to 118... Then 120? 122?.... And so on and so forth :)

    Great video J,

    Andy :)

  • lol Great intro :-)

  • increasing the speed in a build up is a good idea some times

  • This guy needs some kind of award/intergalactic recognition for being a super nice badass.

  • start tutorial button - 0:55

  • 0:36 jon without hat, rare

  • you need ur on show . .

  • fuck i love this guy

  • thats beast

  • tutorial starts at 0.55

  • how many mixers do you have dude?:P

  • i just keep wondering where he got his perm and highlights now :P kinky man :P

  • 2:30 could you not just bring them both to 125 bpm ??

  • this dude lives inside an episode of blue peter

  • somebody should start the 'buy johnathan a new piano fund'

  • gota love the retards who point out the most obvious of jokes.

  • 17 people don't want to pay 65 pounds for a perm.

  • you arent as funny as you think lol but your videos are very helpful

  • the epitome of english humor. great vid :)

  • yeah you r awesome and you have helped me out ssooooo much. thank jonny:)

  • HI JONNY...just want you to know that you are a good mentor to us all.

  • keep up the good work man ..thanx

  • LOL at the start and end

  • hi, thanks for your videos, this is great !!!! do you use the same in order to go from a fast to a slower toon?

  • this doesnt work with dubstep or drum and bass :P

  • @xSwiissSkiillz yea it does if you drop the beat.

  • LMFAO did u ever get the hilights and a perm? XD

  • genuine love for the music

  • Comment removed

  • I love how he actually knows things about music.

  • @cabbage142 Some people seem to forget that "actually knowing things about music" is a DJ's job, first and foremost.

  • Why do you write tune as "toon"? Is that just how they write it where you live? Great tutorial, anyway.

  • @gpoop23

i've asked me the same thing, he's writing it as "toon" at all his videos. Still don't know it xD

  • lol. 3:32-3:40 love the sound effects man!

  • hi sir,

been watching you tutorials it really helped me a lot and im from the philippines..

and stil trying to get the hang of it...hope to see more....thanks....

  • hello Sir,

I am a learner, i dont have a turn table to practice but certainly have virtual dj software, kindly help me with rocking House tracks links..kindly reply on mexican_burger@yahoo.com

  • LOL i didnt even mean to get to this vid i dont even dj but after the beggining i watched the whole vid for some reason....

Nice tut even though i didnt have a clue =)

  • HAHAHAHA loved when he took his cap off while speaking on the phone =D

  • get of phone fooo

  • rofl @ beginning

  • So is that it you change the tempo of the track currently playing just beatmatch into ther next track from there ?

  • Mathematically, you can change the key of the track by changing the pitch these amounts:

    -2 semitones: -10.9%

    -1 semitone: -5.6%

    +1 semitone: +5.9%

    +2 semitones: +12.2%

I do not really know the formulas behind these values, I just looked them up, but really, those values are where the technique in this video really works. It all comes down to music/harmonics theory.

  • Keep posting videos mate ! cheers from sweden !!

  • LOL whats up with the phone? haha - awesome video bud

  • In a sense.....

  • Guru you are the best tutor i have ever seen keep up the spirit & love for music & DJing

  • @DJadamafro lol your pathetic

  • @daveygravey123456 no.... this video is THE shit

  • this guy is awesome!

  • wat do i do if i wanna go from 128 to 170?? (ex. house to hardcore)

  • Comment removed

  • @lifeless080 @lifeless080 if you have to go from house to hardcore, it means u wanna mess with who is listening to you...in this case anything is ok to do :)

  • @lifeless080 Something like that is extremely difficult to beatmatch,. like he said I would recommend finding a good part of the track you want to mix INTO and wait for a sort of break or drop in the track that's currently playing and make sure it sounds rigfht

  • @Quipsilon i find wat ur sayin true and lately while practicin ive been dropping....and the mix comes out pretty good...^^ cheers

  • Lol I love ur vids.

  • love learning form u thanks alot!!

  • u r not the best dj in the world. but i can say that u r my best entertaining, educating and inspiring DJ ever..

  • that haircut is gonna look sweet!

  • hahahahahahaahah funny duude.. thanks man

  • hahaha, I love this guy

  • I don't want to be the devil's advocate here, but I think the piano thing is not entirely accurate. Going from one octave to the other would mean going up 12 semitones (C -> C# -> D -> D# -> E -> F -> F# -> G -> G# -> A -> A# -> B -> C).

I've learned that precisely +6.00% on the pitch control (when no key lock such as Master Tempo is active) is precisely +1 semitone (e.g. C -> C# for example). Similarly -6.00% is -1 semitone.

My udnerstanding is that going +1 octave would mean +72.00% (!)

  • So (to complete my other post) I believe that what's going on here is that the tempo is increased by an amount close to 6.00% so the key is actually shifting up by one semitone, to C# or so. So the other song must be in the key of C# as well (or a compatible key, see harmonic mixing rules) in order to sound good at the same tempo...

  • @djsixottawa supermathematical nitpicking aside, your point is solid. a semitone is pretty much the nastiest interval there is. Exactly matched key @original speed and 6% speed difference is a bit of a recipy for a failure.

  • @3yE interesting math! I only knew about the +/- 6% thing... do you have a tutorial link that explains all of this in more detail? Just curious to learn a few more bits on this.

  • @djsixottawa It doesn't quite work that way, the full octave is exactly double the frequency, i.e. +100% up, -50% down. A semitone ET is roughly +5.9%, -5.6%, just semitone is a tiny bit larger. The relationship of perceived note to frequency is exponential, and frequency to note is logarithmic. Head spinning yet? Nice coincidece though is that (1+6%) * (1+6%) ~= (1+12%), it's -11% the other way though.

  • haha nice intro

  • I like this method, i personally slow one track dwn a little and then the other up and bring the tempo back down as i move into the track im mixing in

  • Man!! realy thanks!

also the trance mix tutorial was very good!

i'm very happy there are such a good dj that can help us!

thanks man, i'm going practice everyday with your tips

  • LOL at the start.

  • @DJSillzor

    lmao

  • thanks for all these videos man. i really appreciate the help!

  • Its good to see that there are talented people who wants to help others, that they can be as good as you.

Many musicians have too much ego to do this.

I love your videos , keep it up man.

(I will never be, like u, its because i will never buy a mixer to do it :'( )

  • ahahha :) I Love You ^^ FunnyMan.

  • UR A LEGEND I HAVE SEEN A FEW OF UR VIDEOS

  • hahaha perm

  • so highlits and a perm how much would that be 65 pounds ok

  • look! this here is a piano! :D

  • LOL NICE VID

  • You explained the theory behind this really well. But what you did in your demonstration was pitch the track up by one whole tone, not an octave. (You can hear this if you have perfect pitch.) Anyway just a detail, I love what you do and it's been totally helpful, thanks for sharing!

  • Where the heck were you 5 years ago!

Thanks for spreading some enlightenment for the rest of us!

Good luck with the perm btw!! lol

    Peace!

  • so useful thank you!!!

  • and try and do that on CDJ 100S...

  • tzzz

  • What about mixing Dubstep and Drum and Bass together? So roughly 140 with 180. I've only got vinyl decks, and not very good ones at that. My pitch control can't actually get a 140 track as fast as 180. :/.

  • try and mix them when theres is a breakdown in one tune so the beats stops and then bring in the other tune

  • Hm, but there's usually still some form of percussion or something in breaks, :/.

  • every timi i c the beginning i can't stop laughing.

    great for a mix. lol

  • how critical is it to you and your audience for you tracks to stay in the same key - typically you want to transition or move your set in a different direction - so using a method prescribed below - slowing down one record and speeding the other up... seems to be a good solution - Yes / NO

  • You have some excellant knowledge and I have learnt a lot from this tutorial..Thanks

  • i love you man, i really really love you

  • *meant for the DJ teacher*

this is the newest show on tv, Man vs Turntables (aka man vs wild) lmao

  • forget the perm, you should shave your head. it's cheaper! : /

  • thanks mate!

    Good job

  • its easier to do a spinback or bring it in when theres no beat, plus when u moved the track u didnt go an octave up...

  • another way of doing this, would be to increase the speed of the track playing slowly, preferably at the breakdown of the song, to get a nice transition thats difficult to notice, about halfway of the speed u want it to go, then get the other track slowed down to half way of where u speeded this one up, this way, the tracks still sound relatively well in sound, and u can continue to mix, then speed the other track up to where u wanted it in the first place...

its all about a slow transition

  • what if i want to go from a song thats at about 90 bpm to 120 or 130 bpm?

  • it cant really be done very well, try mixing it with drum and bass!

  • stuff is what i meant

  • how much is a beginner turntable lke for scrathcing and stugg

  • i would say from about 300 pounds ( 350 euro's)

but if you don't want to spend that much you can get them for 180 or so but those will be belt driven and much worser quality

  • thanks 4 the 2 tourial!!! DJ KiNG

  • lmfao! The beginning was genious! XD

  • i'm practicing and enjoying!!!

  • This is the most musical Dj advice I've seen on Youtube. You need to expand this and show how to identify the key a track is in with a Turntable or CDJ and then made a grid that shows the key the next track should be in. Obviously the BPM would be the same, adjusted by the pitch control on the new track coming in. This chart would have to be somekind of math % cause the mix of the bpm and the key would be different for every song. Disreguard posters negative comments, you're a real do gooder.thx

  • Paradigm404, although there is a simple way to work out the ratio between tempo / pitch and their relationship with each other.... music can be more complicated than just 'a key' ... so it's often a matter of using your ear to locate which parts of each tune work best together... software is already more than available with regards to key mapping digital audio... it just has to analyse the harmonic structure...that would be a good feature on future DVS/CDJ's etc.... 'Key Mapping'

  • now thats just great!

  • i think i understand what you are saying about mixing but you lost me on the highlights and the perm ahahaha i too shave my head so the bald humor was how do you say in the UK, "Cheeky"????

  • So just to be sure, the reason to speed up the track is is so that you can mix it in smoothly with the next track, that is at higher bpm?

I say that only because dj ellaskins didn't the actually mixing from one track to another.

I think it would be great if someone could post a video with the different components: play a track, speed it up by 10 and then transition to othe next..

  • Your just amazing dude

  • Thanx mate your tutorials are dead useful!!!

  • LOL intro is friggin great

  • This guy is a legend.

  • ladyhawke is cool man!

  • true dat!

  • haha like the strt :P

  • :D perfect comic timing as well as perfect dj timing :D

  • oh and by the way.. i look forward to ur perm lmaoooo. that was 2 funny

  • So basically, what you are doing is using master tempo to stay in the same key right?

Then what point is there in using the DJM-800 it's "Harmonic Colour" effect to get back to the right key, apart from using it as an effect rather than using it to match the keys?

By the way Jonathan, keep up the good work, you don't even know how much you taught me already :D

    Kudo's!

  • many thanks for your videos they are a great help

  • Great tutorials!! Love your hunour :))))

  • you may not be the best dj in the world but your the best dj tutor =p

  • AMEN TO That! This Guys A LEgend. by the way jon. i usually wait ideally till ive put on a track thats hot a climax. usualy il just keep getting faster as the night progresses tho. but if i need to do what u just did i do it abit slower with key lock ON as all my tunes are set out by key and alphabetical order anyway lol... key lock rules! yes there wer the days wen djs used to do without it but them days r gone! lol. welcome to a new age of harmonic mixing youtubers

  • holy shit man youre hilarious

  • good tutorial, nice work!!!

  • vai toma no teu cu seu otario

  • LOL!! Nano Perm!!

  • lol ellaskins you rock dude

also, are you the original of the term 'practice and enjoy"? everyone is using it!

  • I have a method which proves to be useful and effective. During some songs, its structured in phrases that incorporate vocals, instrumentals and breakdowns. So on the last 'bar' (or 2) of a breakdown or section etc. You loop it and over the period of 1 phrase you slowly increase the tempo from say 120 to 130, and then on the last bar in that phrase, you stop the loop and it will immediately jump in the next section which could be vocals for example...

  • ma chi cazzo lo conosce questo??
