I really wanted to hate Lavinia but I could never muster up any bad feelings towards her she was too good, too sweet-I don't think even Mary ever disliked her. Poor thing :(
thanks for uploading. just saw the ep tonight and I needed to see that Mathew/Mary kiss scene again! I was watching their heads get closer and hoped they'd kiss and they did! Lavinia is very sweet though and so selfless.
I love how Matthew says that he wishes he could get rid of this damn stick so he can walk up the aisle unassisted but later tells Mary "you are my stick". Hmmmn, does that mean he's trying to get rid of thoughts of Mary? Ah Matthew, you might want to rethink your marriage to Lavinia.

I don't know if anyone else has seen the latest version of Sense & Sensibility in which Dan Stevens plays Edward Ferrars, but between the end of that and the dance scene here, I'm getting a little dizzy watching Dan Stevens kiss.
I just reread that and realized I should clarify, it's the spiraling camerawork that is making me dizzy, not his serious attractiveness.

Matthew initiated all the romantic words and moves on Mary, yet at the cemetery he said that they (Mary and he) caused Lavinia's broken which in the end killed her. This man's character is clearly flawed.
I would like to see the entail law repealed so that Mary can inherit her mother's wealth. I hope she dumps Richard Carlisle, and moves on with her life with another person who will be good and true to her. Perhaps even Evelyn Napier will have a change of heart.

Entail concentrates land and wealth into the hands of a few lucky people, and Jefferson felt since it crippled Europe as a monarchy, it should be abolished in a democracy. He was successful.

One line that I don't get is when Lavinia and Matthew agree that she would have taken better care of him than Mary. But Mary, who's not a nurse or anything, looked after him in the hospital and pushed him around the estate a lot, whereas Lavinia sat beside him crying in the hospital and started to push him once, but then let Bates take over. Don't get me wrong, I like Lavinia and think she's sweet and all, but Mary has taken much better care of him than she has.
@anemone2397 I totally agree! Infact during that line i was like "WTF?!". Lavinia's adorable, but where was she when he needed her? I know he pushed her away, but before then she wasn't there neither. Mary held his head when he threw up! How could it not matter? I don't get how they forgot D:

The reason season 2 (with regards to Mary and Matthew) wasn't as good as season 1 is bc Matthew held all the cards--Mary was the underdog the ENTIRE season, pining after him...anyone want to see Mary have the upper hand again?? Matthew should be the one to win her back this time. In order for that to happen, he needs a more formidable rival than skeevy old carlisle
@startingoutbackwards Mary is not married yet.This episode takes place in April. She"s supposed to marry Carlisle in July which will be before the Downton Christmas Special. We won't know until then if they marry. She needs to give Carlisle the heave-ho and tell him that she doesn't care if he reveals her secret. She must confide in her father because I think that he will help her. How can her life be any worse off then it is now. Looks like Matthew won't be rescuing her any time.soon. Ugh!!

carlisle can go die as far as i'm concerned. in my perfect ending, he would have died and lavignia would leave so that matthew could be happy with mary. and they could skip off into the sunset.
@SharpiesAndPaint I'm hoping against hope that Slimey, Slithery Richard will prove to be one few honorable men at Downton and decide to release Lady Mary from her engagement to him. He knows that she doesn't love him and most likely never will. As much as he talked about not caring about love, i think deep down he does want Mary to fall in love with him. He just may man-up and do the noble thing. Richard having more scruples than Matthew. Wouldn't we all be shocked!
It's really heartbreaking to see Mary reply back to "This Is The End" and agree, it's like she's utterly dejected and everything's just scuppered, and she believes it. But at the same time It's all very 'and my wasted heart will always love you' . I hope that the fact that she see's that there really is no chance of ever having anything with Matthew now, that it drives Mary to really start really focusing on Richard now, and seeing him as her only option.

This series is slowly becoming a tragedy. I'm I the only one that believes the poor old doctor is one very incompetent practitioner? He almost always gets things wrong. May be medicine was mostly guess work in those days.
Argh!!! I hate Fellowes for dragging it out like this! There's no way these two will get together for the Xmas special when there's a whole 3rd season to string us along..and the torture continues...
Thank you again and again CLIPSBYKIM for posting this. I love D A. However, I completely agree with the comments of others that: what the hell is wrong with Mathew? He doesn't deserve Mary. I've watched many period dramas and the chemistry and love between these two is better than Mr. Darcy/Lizzie from P & P. Of course, the acting must be really good but if they were real they would fit each other very well even running the estate. God wake up Mathew.

@princesspinkblue No, because stick is a recurring theme: matthew has one; bates has one, and there are a couple of more references in dialog and camera angles to the word "stick." I'm just glad that 21st century audio allows us to hear Mary's response, a sigh or gulp ;>.

This series is slowly becoming a tragedy. I'm I the only one that believes the poor old doctor is one very incompetent practitioner? He almost always gets things wrong. May be medicine was mostly guess work in those days.

Thank you again and again CLIPSBYKIM for posting this. I love D A. However, I completely agree with the comments of others that: what the hell is wrong with Mathew? He doesn't deserve Mary. I've watched many period dramas and the chemistry and love between these two is better than Mr. Darcy/Lizzie from P & P. Of course, the acting must be really good but if they were real they would fit each other very well even running the estate. God wake up Mathew.

@princesspinkblue No, because stick is a recurring theme: matthew has one; bates has one, and there are a couple of more references in dialog and camera angles to the word "stick." I'm just glad that 21st century audio allows us to hear Mary's response, a sigh or gulp ;>.

I can't believe he did that to her! Like come on, he kissed her! But my only problem is that the Christmas special is going to take place at Christmas but Richard and Mary set their wedding for end of July. Maybe they'll cancel it because of Lavinia but I don't think Richard would be happy with that. I can't wait a year for season three! Why do they have to be so short?!?!?!
