For a while, it remained publicly accessible, and you could visit the upper floors which had some amazing views of the skyline. However, it's now been locked, so you can't even do that anymore.

I guess they will demolish the estate at some point. Not sure when though. Financial problems have delayed the redevelopment.

I did some sub contract work on this estate around 99/00 and to say the housing was bad is an understatement!!!!One of the most deprived ares ive ever worked in. Hi Mark, The estate is a cash hole. Since Nov 1999 £millions have been spent, it works like this; Southwark allocate funds- "friendly" contractor is employed- No work is done but contractor gets paid- Contractor and politicans all get a nice "drink".

Look for any allocation of funds for the Heygate in the last five years, then try and find the work it relates to.

It's a dirty little game so watch your back.

SOme ex heygate residents have recently moved into my new block - just a day or so after the place got so much dirtier, lift and main door got broken and the communal area always smells of weed.
