  • Well,I wasn't gonna comment, but since I see other people feel the same way.....Vai IS great,no doubt, but he fucked the solo up big time. The John Sykes original has a bluesy feel mixed with his wonderful shredding that can't and should not EVER be replaced.Steve is better off being a solo artist than trying to emulate other players.Other players are better at emulation.Check out "guitaristfromnorth" here on youtube for his rendition of Crying in the rain.MUCH better than this.

  • Yep, Sykes recorded but no tour.

  • I saw this show in 1990 in the Galgenwaard Stadium Utrecht in the Netherlands, one of the best hardrock shows i ever saw....

  • Sorry mr.Vai you ruin that song with your solo ! ! ! Whitesnake is not the right place for you !

  • Didnt Vandenberg or Vivian Campbell play the solo on the 87 tour? Thought Sykes got the boot after the album was recorded.

  • Who sings ?

  • What the fuck are you doing with that solo Steve??? WTF!!

  • the 85 rio version pisses all over this.... I know Vai is a wizard and Vandenberg is good but sometimes the whole is better than the sum of it's parts..

  • Not even BIG VAI could match Sykes' original GUTS-SHOW NO MERCY solo.

    Period.

  • @trento777 Doug Aldrich came pretty close, IMO =D

  • I love Vai, but man, that was brutal. Yes, we know you got a fancy new (for the time) 7 string guitar... you don't have to hit that low D all the time.

  • ok

  • 5:30 Rudy! Rudy! Stop humping your bass. There are groupies backstage if you can just hold out until Tommy starts his solo.

  • That's not fair, Vai has super powers, Sykes had/has to do it with his very own skills :P

  • Vai doesn't come even close to the magnificent solo of John Sykes in this song...

  • Why bother then for fucks sake!

  • I really like Vai, but Sykes owns this

  • what the fuck steve vai! what the fuck was that???

  • joke of a video quality!

  • @ray131262

    lol @ dumb

Sorry, we couldn't get Spielberg to record this bootleg for you.

  • the solo is not as good as john sykes version - less melodic

  • @mcbumfarty While he is one of the fastest shredders around, Steve Vai has always lacked melody in his playing for me.

  • @eemukwada clearly you are either someone who knows very little about music, or very little about vai. please take the time to listen to something off one of his solo albums before making such a statement. for the love of god is an example of one of the greatest guitar melodies ever written. do your homework and u wont come of as stupid.

  • @FretsOvFury

    well said

  • @puppetz77..I'm excited about the June 7th release as well!! It's gonna be amazing!!

  • Thumbs up if u get on here and thumbs up everything just 'cause ure drunk!

  • 6:00 to 6:15 of the solo is brutal. thats exactly what im looking for in a ROCK guitar player. the tapping is such bullshit. vai is totally great without it.

  • Can't wait for the official DVD/CD release in June!!!

  • The official DVD release of this show is also confirmed by David Coverdale in the magazine included in the Classic Rock fan pack of Frovermore,

  • David Coverdale has the greatest voice in rock and roll

  • i would've been pissed if he didn't say it was off saints and sinners that was best album they ever did

  • Sykes is the Man, but Vai added his own flavor and style to WS at the time. I was there at Monsters of Rock 1990 - Bad Ass Concert!

  • 0:56 you van just feel is a steve vai!!!!

  • Why is Tommy's drum solo missing?

  • I've still got all the T-shirts!!!

  • wow i was there they came on after dark . steve via what more can i say!!! they were fantastic.can't belive it's bin 20 years

  • I think Vai's solo is ok... But I assume filling Sykes' shoes was a big job even for Vai (who's an excellent player). I think Doug Aldrich is doing a better job in that respect nowadays, but he also fails miserably when it comes to songwriting with DC. I think Sykes was the best songwriter/arranger in WS followed by Moody/Marsden and then Vandenberg.

Having said that I have the feeling Sykes was getting a bit lazy in tthe last few years with the new 'thin lizzy'. I hope he regroups Blue Murder

  • @99theinvertedmoron Completely agree with you. I think the biggest mistake of Coverdale's entire career was firing Sykes.

  • I was there!

  • @eeddas Really? Wow!!! I was 21 or 22 at the time! It must have been fantastic!

  • @xuxis2008 I was 20 and I came from Italy, fantastic show!

  • Vai is fine but he lacks the fury and balls that Sykes has.THe problem is when Vai tries to emulate other players - It's always that whammy bar bulshit and those cheap legatos, c'mon. Same thing when he played in Alcatrazz and had to play Malmsteen solos. Instead of fast alternate picking he cheated with tapping and legatos.

  • @xuxis2008

oh yeah "multi"tapping is so easy !

  • Vai is a great player and musician, but as always NO PLAYER can get even close to the original Sykes solo to this song.

  • JEah Steve Vai

  • I would like to hear this solo TODAY from Steve Vai. What a fucking amazing guitarist!

  • they cut Tommy Aldridges solo unfair better than all that poncing with a guitar by vai!!

  • Hey ajax, i guess, my guess is as good as yours, a shit load of money, another big gig, the Steve Vai Show ?

  • What Vai does has nothing to do with the song. What the hell is he doing here.

  • @ajaxrules1975 Steve Vai was the guitar player on the Whitesnake ablum, "Slip of the Tongue" which is why he is playing with them on that tour.

  • @BaloneyPonyz I know that. But Vai ruining the song.

  • @ajaxrules1975 Agree with you completely. What the song needs is a fiery blues based hard rock guitar player such as Sykes. Vai is great, but his weird modal playing doesn't fit here at all.

  • i love vai, but where was the song

  • Sykes is much better that Vai in his style. Where is the sensibility in this version ?

  • I wish DC would release the entire show as a 20th anniversary video on DVD/Blue Ray/iTunes

  • he will. at least on dvd. not sure about the other 2

  • Sersiouly Vai? A retard? I'm pretty sure he knows more about many subjects then you do. One of the biggest would be Music Theory, I'm sure the second would be social skills....

Let me remind you that arguing on the internet is like the special olympics... You may win the race but you are still a cabage!

  • toddkata is a total moran on 2 accounts...most importantly calling someone a retard is worse than any sort of racism and secondly you clearly have no understanding of the guitar and what a great musician Steve Vai is, I can only assume your very young and have a lot to learn !

get a grasp of the English language and the guitar !

  • Wow. Well, not sure what a moran is, best learn how to spell. Oh and it's you're, not your - so try grammar lessons while you're at it. Pun intended. As for retard, see "hyperbole". I actually like Vai a lot. Passion and Warfare was great. Point is Vai and his style were just totally inappropriate in WS, and this solo is a perfect example. Strictly a hired gun. His playing reflects it. The crescendo in this solo is a garbled out of key mess. Better in Zappa than in a monster song like this.

  • A retard is a Victorian term, for someone with a severe learning disability. When I met Steve Vai, I didn't see that impairment at all.

When I saw him at the above gig, he played with great skill, perfection & feeling. So you, TODDKATA are a total fucking wanker who knows shit about music or the English language. So stop playing with mummy's laptop and fuck off and get yourself a life you stupid little C*NT

  • totally agree with your comments...well said !

  • ??? vai kicks fuckin ass as usual. really doubt sykes is laughing at all- probably back in his room practicing instead!

  • yeah I'm sure Vai is a retard, since he has more of an understanding of the guitar and Musical Theory than pretty much everyone in the world. I'll agree Vai is not right for Whitesnake, he is not heavy metal like Sykes or Aldrich, but even in this performance you can see all of his understanding and talent flowing out of his guitar.

  • there's an excellent bootleg version out there with Vai on that is much, much better than this, he hits an awesome harmonic when Coverdale say's 'howls,' and it used to chill me to my core.

  • that's vai alright, "bone-chilling" is a good way to describe his playing

  • @goodygoody23 for sure, I am a big fan.

  • Coverdale get off yur arse and release this as a dvd dude

  • he's going to probably sometime next year as a 20th anniversary thing. 2 songs from this concert are available on the "slip of the tongue" 20th anniversary special edition

  • yeah man i have that!

but u know it b epic if he wud release it as a dvd and cd

  • knowing him it probably will be

  • This should be realease in official dvd

  • @kondurperusix it will be, this summer ;-)

  • @MarinStoikov really???? official dvd??? how do you know?

  • Comment removed

  • @folladordeprostis Whitesnake confirmed it on their official website ;-)

  • @MarinStoikov Really??? I was looking for that info in WS site and did not find it

  • @folladordeprostis I would have sended you the link but my comment can't post with the link in it

go here: WHITESNAKE are back with the anticipated release of their brand new album "Forevermore" - Full Press Release Here and then go to the text down from the picture and then you'll see it - it's with bold words ;-)

  • @MarinStoikov Yeah I just read it,hope it will be the entire concert,so far the only official WS dvd is the still of the night 2004

  • @folladordeprostis yeah, they have some many great early concerts they can release (1978-1981), but not much has survived from that era, I think

  • @kondurperusix It's out in a couple of months!

  • @kondurperusix

    In June 2011 ;)

  • @kondurperusix it is

  • one things for sure whitesnake always had great guitarplayers!

  • @krillos77 definately, guitarwise one of the BEST bands out there :)

  • this si cool, but those guys can'tmatch john sykes playing from the album.
