Nice performance. However, your banjo overpowers your voice. You need to perform this with a single mic that's either a boom overhead, or perhaps a lapel mic on the opposite side of the banjo. I would love to see this, because it's a fun song and you do a nice job. We just need to hear more of your voice. Thanks for performing this funny song so I could show it to my daughter. :-)
it does, the flavour does go unfortunately... and it doesn't matter if it is on the bedpost or not - I found some behind my ear this morning... the GUMption of it all!
haha. i love this song! my grandma was telling me about it and this is the first time I've heard it! hahaha. i am definately showing my friends!!!! i love it!
My Grandpa used to play this song for me...i wont be abe to do it justice as you have because i dont play an instrument, but I may have to give singing it a go :)
did Homer and Jethro do that? I quit chewing and now people look dumb to me that chew gum like at work all day and pop it every 5 minutes. I've never seen Europeans chew - WTF.
Does anyone know who sang "Get Them Cold Feet on the Other Side? Again, I thought it was Little Jimmy Dickens but now I realize I could be wrong. I heard this a lot in the 1953-1957 range.
I remember this song as a very young child;my parents listened to it. Was this a Little Jimmy Dickens song? This question isn't meant to be an insult if it is yours but I thought the old record was a Jimmy Dickens
I do not know if Little Jimmy Dickens recorded this song or not. It was a hit record for Lonnie Donegan about 1959. The song itself is quite old going back maybe 100 years. It was originally called "Does Your Spearmint Lose It's Flavor?"
I saw Lonnie Donnegan perform at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in a Charity gig, Victoria Wood was the main star - early 1990s. As I was born mid 1960s, I was surprised to see how mad the audience went during his turn - he did three songs - including this one - something I shall always remember
I also saw Lonnie Donegan perform. It was in Maidenhead (near London) at a supper club in December 1989. I actually got to sit down with him in his dressing room before the show. I had been a fan since the mid 50's and it was a real treat to see him do a 2 hour show in a very small venue.
You mentioned George Formby... Donegan was influenced by American folk music but he had strong British Music Hall
tendencies in his style of delivery. Not that far from George Formby.
First of all... I am a Canadian (with a British passport - my father was born in Liverpool) not an American and secondly... this is an old American song. (original title "Does Your Speariment Lose Its Flavor") Lonnie Donegan did an interesting "music hall" interpretation of this American song even though he did it a little too fast.
Hi, I'm a tenor player. I use a single pick. How are you strumming with a thumb and index pick. I cannot figure out the strumms..super rythm..thanks ed
First of all I tune my tenor banjo like a guitar D G B E. I don't use tenor banjo chording, I use guitar chording.
As to my strum with a thumb and index pick? Basically it is a little like the bum ditty rythmn that claw hammer banjo players use. I hit a note with my thumb pick (down stroke) then I strum the entire chord with my thumb followed by a quick up stroke with my index finger on the first 2 strings.
Lonnie Donagan!!! Isn't that who sang this? I heard it once on the Doctor Demento radio show. You're a pretty cool guy. I just looked at your rendition of "Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly" and I went looking at your other postings. You sing alot of the songs that my father sang to me as a child. I'm glad to be able to play them for mine via you tube. Thanks again! -A Kentucky Mommy
Yes, it was Lonnie Donegan. He was the king of skiffle music which was a huge fad in England during the 1950's. Outside of my father, Lonnie Donegan has been the biggest influence on my musical style. I actually met Lonnie Donegan once in 1990 in Maidenhead, England.

When I would wake up crabby my granny would greet me with, "Honey did your chewing gum loses its flavor over night?"
Now where is the song about the goat that flagged down that dam train?
Happy New Year!

Americans shouldn't try to sing this, they don't produce the same sound and he's too slow.
