@twoodyatwood - If it were me, I would go with the original microKorg. The microSTATION is, in my opinion, too complex of a machine for efficient live use. I think it is best suited for producers and studio musicians. Mine never leaves my desk, yet I take my microKorg everywhere.
So yeah, def go with the MK. The XL is alright, and if you're sold on it already then by all means go for it, but consider the original. It seems like it would be a better fit for a punk band. good luck!
This is a tremendous keyboard if you "accept it" as a table top synth with a virtual keyboard attached. Use it as a MIDI slaved 120 voice module with a sequencer and the problem with the mini keys goes away. It's the ideal second keyboard; price, sound, portability and capability can not be beat. Great demo video. Yes! I agree with above comment. Teasing us with that Jupiter 6 laying dormant on the wall. Have mercy. It's practically porno for gear sluts.
Nice review as usual, from Sonic State :) . But If it hasnt been mentioned before, it is possible to go down a few octaves down/up. You just go to global parameters-transpose and voila!! :) Its not very fun to do as it would if there was a switch, but its nice nonetheless.
@notsert123 Fools on youtube always say you should get something other than Korg. Don't listen to those stupid jerk-offs. M-audio? Korg's synth history is one of the top most accomplished there are. M-audio stands no chance in tech experience or know-how. They may make some midi keboards.
They really missed a trick with this SD card not being allowed to access your own loops and sounds, if you could use samples form the SD card this would be a must have bit of kit for many people.
question, hopefully you can answer this. is there a way so that when playing live, i can change from one preset quickly to another one without having to go searching through my microstation for them?
I really like all your reviews on all the various Synths & Workstations. Just wanted to ask are you going to be performing a review on the Korg M50 as well? I just purchased a Korg MicroSTATION and i absolutely love and is also condering the Korg M50
@zzzxtreme To tell you the truth, the small keys really don't bother me. Yes, they're small, but they're not that small to the point of inoperation as some would have you believe haha...Then again I'm used to playing on a Microkorg. The key size really isn't an issue for me, it hasn't hindered my playing at all. :)
thanks. i tested it again with my own pro headphones. they sound really good. and the shop also sells official microstation case/backpack. really cute. I can carry it with my motorbike!
Would be nice to see a new module with lush warm sparkly pads (which i may add Korg a bloody brilliant at since the 01/w) a reasonable priced rackmount module would be right up my street, i had a look at the Korg X50 rackmount however a more up to date engine would be nice in a new rack-mount from korg.
@alexfrbc Actually, I don't think micro keys are totally bad. After all, your hand can only stretch so far on a normal sized keyboard, but micro keys increases the range over which your hands can stretch. Plus, if you really miss the regular sized keys that much, why not just do a MIDI out connection from a normal sized keyboard? Considering how affordable the microSTATION is, I don't think you should be so quick to dismiss it out of hand.
@mokkshaa Korg have had a very VA generic sound for years, which is a shame, the made some great synths ie - MS20, Monopoly, Poly 800/8000 etc, this just seems like another disposable toy thats like anything else....
Just in time for Christmas..... When you consider the size of the keys and the weight of the unit, I could see this being a good starter keyboard for the young, budding synthesist.
You know what though? Having a new way of working can add unexpected new twists to your music. If you find that you play differently with small keys, it might give you a fresh take on playing. Kinda like the Axis 64 or whatever.
Excellent review. The small keys aren't a problem as a full size keyboard can be plugged in via MIDI in. It's best used in conjunction with a computer and a DAW although you can import SMF on the SD card. It's definitely for a home studio especially if you haven't much room. I use mine purely as a sound module in SEQ mode. If you are looking for a live performance synth, then it probably won't be for you.
@englishhermit I see what you're saying there but by the time you've paid for the Microstation and bought a decent controller keyboard you're starting to stray into the price range of something like a used Yamaha Motif or Roland Fantom which would give you a much more capable setup for the same kind of money. If on the other hand you're not a keyboard player and don't care about the keybed, I think the Mircrostation is quite the bargain.
Love your reviews, keep them coming! I have to say that this microstation doesn't impress me too much as far as the way it looks... it looks too much like a cheap radioshack keyboard
so can you use that software plugin with a regularMIDII controller?

Hi I'm in a POP punk band,
At the moment I use a Korg X50, and a kaossilator pro.
Would you reccomend this or the microkorg XL as an addition ??
Anyone help ?

this might sound dumb but.... do you need some sort of speaker for this? because of the stereo output at 2:02

can you use these types of synths with logic and aleton ? or do they just act as midi controllers then ?

Disappointing product. Disappointing price (500euros+).
They refuse to create quality synths at this price range to keep profit margins artificially high. And they're still using last decade's technology.
