OK, Sloan orginally recorded the song as the Grass Roots. It was rerecorded with Bill Fulton, Denny Ellis, David Stenson and Joel Larson of the orginal Bedouins and the hit was on the radio was with those guys. They also recorded Mr. Jones by Bob Dylan and that was a regional hit in SoCal. When they broke up, Sloan tried to hit the charts again with "Its on the Tip on my Tounge"as the Grass Roots and then Let's Live for Today...that's when Rob Grill came in for Lou Adler as the Grass Roots.
skilski: Well this is skil and I was wrong on the following comment: Sloan's voice was the first heard. You are correct. Rob Grill (The Bedouins)..Grass Roots came a little bit later. Grill never sang with the Bedouins, but sang with a group called 13th Floor when Sloan heard them and asked them to record this song. Long story, eh?
You have to give the man his due as he did write some classic songs. I wish I could write just one good song like his. I don't know him or what he's like but just let the music do the talking and enjoy what he has done. A fan. Cheers.
@skilski2003 Ok, so what I am trying to figure out (and bear with the 31 year old entering this conversation): Sloan wrote the song and as I understand it from the Gunga's Farm website, he recorded the vocal on the original studio version of the song. Is there a studio version with Fulton's voice on the lead vocal? Looking around the YouTubes it seems I can find 2 distinct versions of the song - distinct only because of differences in the lead vocal - orchestration is the same.
wow, this is great~

The man's a genius and I enjoyed this unplugged version more than I did the studio version. Thanks.

Thanks for posting this!! PF Sloan's voice is actually on the original Grass Roots 45 of this great sing (pre-Rob Grill)

Thats not him singing lead on it though you know; his voice can be heard as a "guide vocal" for Bill Fulton of The Bedouins.
But its still great tho!

And that, of course, has been a topic of years of discussion and speculation among us fans.

Always sounded like Sloan to me. Plus I've read it in numerous articles.
