Lie detectors are not as accurate as they claim to be. They pick up breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure I believe but not sure on the last?

Anyway, anything can set off breathing and heart rate such as fear, anger or nervousness, etc. Because the lie detector picks it up doesn't mean this person is lying.

If it's rumors from a family member, the guy should definitely look into it.
