Grateful dead never could sing...but when they jammed, they were unbelievable. Nothing better than letting your mind swim in there music for 30 straight minutes.
@florestiner12312 Like Bob Dylan, their singing "works" for their music; but yes, it's just not in the same class of vocal gods and goddesses like Janis Joplin or Steven Tyler or Robert Plant

@powdersucks317 Phil is 73 or something and still slays it every night! The Dead or Furthur, I don't care. I wish Jerry was still here but..........Peace! Ugly@UglyTone
@armandolarch Garcia always hated their performance at Woodstock. The whole set was riddled with sound problems. At one point it got so bad that whenever Jerry would grab the microphone he'd get a shock. Half the stage was sinking and the P.A. kept shorting out so they couldn't hear themselves play. I've heard a bootleg of this performance in its entirety and half the time they are just tuning up and trying to get everything to work while the crowd is mostly asleep (it was like 4am)
They weren't on the documentary because they wouldn't sign the release. It was raining for most of the set and were getting shocked each strum they played. They felt it was subpar themselves. Wasn't an epic dead performance. Enjoyed seeing this footage even though it wasn't them at best. For the fool who said the sucked obviously you've never been to a dead show and your knowledge of what they stood for. Your opinion is accepted but full of ignorance.
Today is the 41st anniversary of the Grateful Dead's listless, lousy performance at Woodstock - August 16, 1969. 41 years since the greedy, money-grubbing, materialistic, hypocritical members of the Dead insisted on being paid cash in advance by the concert promoter before performing on stage for their loyal, adoring deadhead fans. Where's all the peace and love man? Listen to that monstrous ego - "Tell him, I'm Phil Lesh. I gotta get back to the hotel..." Screw the Dead, they suck.

long live Jerry........Its hard each and every day without him here to fill our souls with the greatest music of ALL TIME. He really is a legend now and forever. Please give respect.
The first song is "Turn On Your Lovelight", originally by Bobby Blue Bland. The Dead perform it on the live album "LiveDead", among many other versions. It was Pigpen's big showcase, but you can't hear him in this version.
BORE...ING! Music for dead heads. You'd have to be dead in the head to listen to this horse shit. You know what I think of the Grateful Dead? I'd be grateful if they were dead! Hey, what did one dead head say to the other dead head when they ran out of drugs? "This music sucks!" :^)
I am sorry to say Big Red that you have no fucking idea about music, talented musicians, and culture. Go listen to your gay Barney music while you stick your finger up your ass, apparently with your brain IQ it is the only thing you can do by yourself. The Dead is the best, and so are the dedicated followers. Cheers Deadheads!! RIP Jerry
Typical brain-dead Deadhead. You know nothing about me, about music, the music I listen to, my IQ or where I stick my finger. The Dead are capitalist pigs who have successfully marketed their shitty music, their image and their culture to morons like YOU. You've been conned, deceived, snookered, betrayed, played a fool. I've never met a Deadhead yet who wasn't an empty head and a big glass of water who couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag. Open your ears, the Dead SUCK. Peace man! :^)
You have to be kidding. They let the people record their concerts. I play lots of their covers and make a good living doing it. It is an acquired taste. I did not get it until I realized I had played the Europe 72 album for three months without listening to anything else.
its ok if you like shitty music, not everyone can be educated correctly in what good music is. but its just sad that you take the time to come on to this site, search up a grateful dead video, then talk shit on the music and their fans. get a life, or a ticket to the next jonas brothers concert. you just don't know what good music is, because if you did then you would at least respect the grateful dead, because without them none of your favorite bans would exist. thank you jerry, rip
My favorite band is the Beatles, so according to you, without the Dead the Beatles would not exist. Right? MUHAHAHAHAHA! Another typical brain-dead deadhead.
I came to watch this video because I heard of all the thousands of lousy Dead shows over the years, their performance at Woodstock was their lousiest of all. It's hard for me to say because I can't watch or listen to this boring shit for more than only a few minutes. Sorry but not everyone is in love with the Dead. Peace man :^)
ok well im glad that you actually like a good band, but to be an educated music fan, you need to at least respect the grateful dead, you dont have to be in love with them. You're just too provincial to see their importance. and all your comments about "typical brain-dead deadheads simply expands your ignorant image that, sadly, you so easily portray on here. yes the woodstock performance wasnt the best but that was one performance out of nearly 3 thousand shows, open your eyes
I get the biggest kick out of deadheads; you take criticism of your beloved Dead so personally. If you don't like the bands I like- the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, the Doors, Eagles, Bad Company, Allman Bros, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, Metallica, AC/DC, etc.- I don't care. But say something negative about the Dead, and you're ready to ATTACK! Where's all the peace and love, man? :^)
I have respect for the Dead, and listen to them occasionally. IT'S DEADHEADS I DON'T LIKE...
funny, i love all those bands you just listed, i love all good music in general. and we take it personally because the band becomes a personal thing after a while, much more so than any other band ive ever listened to. i couldnt care whatsoever if you dont like the Dead just respect them, and it doesn't seem like you respect them when you come on here and say the Dead sucks. the peace and love is all here, to me it seems like you just cant see it. dont be so stubborn man, damn.
funny thing about your peace and love thing is that hippies weren't the peaceful stoned out idiots you think, that is flowerchildren who were usually considered posers than, sure they were all against vietnam cause it was totally wrong but if you got in a hippies face he/she wouldnt turn the cheek they would still beat the shit out of you i mean the fucking hells angels provided security at woodstock. and dont be pissed at deadheads for actually standing up for what they believe in man
Are you STONED or just STUPID? Hell's Angels did NOT provide security at Woodstock. Hell's Angels members were hired by the Rolling Stones to provide security at the Altamont concert in December 1969. Gotta lay off the drugs you've done enough brain damage already MAN...
try not to be so abrasive man, that guy was obviously confused, but the dead were known for using Hell's Angels as security. Rolling Stones got the idea from The Dead. Its a shame that The Stones didnt think about the difference between the 2 styles of music and how much it can change people. But, as far as i know Hell's Angels were not in Attendance as security...i dont think there WAS any security at woodstock ;)...
Listen god damn it, you are right, the Hell's Angels were not security at Woodstock, but the Stones didn't hire the Angels for Altamont, the Dead did. As far as the two styles of music go, the Angels were kicking asses before the music ever started. Marty Balin got knocked out by an Angel during the Airplane's set and the Dead decided not to play. I believe they left the racetrack, so really their a bunch of chicken shit douche bags who were partially responsible.
Errrr, the Dead's manager Rock Scully, warned the Stones not to use the Hells Angels. The Stones used a British version of the Angels in England but they were a far cry from the American version. It wasn't supposed to be at Altamont to begin with but Jagger opened his yap, let out the secret and ruined any chances of a free concert in Golden Gate Park. That is what they really wanted to do. a free concert to bring all the gangs together to try to bring some peace to the Bay area.
Bullshit. Scully moved the show to altamont because of Jagger's big mouth and then he hired the Angels. There are interviews from 40 years ago where he states this. Garcia was friends with the Angels. There is a movie where Garcia and Merl Saunders play for the Angels on a river boat. You can rewrite history all you want but facts are facts.
TRUE THAT. and the only reason the hells angels were ever involved with Timoty Leary is because he was trying to expand their mind. All you fucks are always trying to find something wrong with something to pure. Tell me what you believe in man, tell me... do you have feelings as well? or do you just hide them beneath all your hate.
The Hell's Angels weren't involved with Leary, they were involved with Ken Keasey and the merry pranksters. And Keasey never really liked Leary because he thought he was pretentious. The pranksters weren't into acid because they thought it was a religious experience, they were into it because it was a good time. Also there is plenty wrong with everything. The Dead and the pranksters did some fucked up things.
@BigRedJonson Actually Jerry Garcia suggested using the Hell's Angels because when he was part of the Merry Pranksters he befriended some of them because the Pranksters turned the Angels to LSD.
Who the hell are you to talk about someone else's knowledge of music? I'll ret money on the fact that I have far more knowledge about music theory and history than you. I agree with BigRed. Dead heads are very limited in their appreciation for other music other than the Dead. Not everyone likes the Dead and they don't have to. And they don't have to respect anyone just because they have fans who like them. I for one do not respect Brittany Spears in the least and yet she has millions of fans.
your a douche bag and id like to add that I've never taken any drugs and still recognize that the grateful dead are makers of great music and honestly only an ignorant person would wish death upon a group of people based on their opinions of their music please don't respond to this other than this comment I would like not to interact with such a close minded individual such as your self
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
THANKS, you just proved my previous point. You Deadheads take critcism of your beloved Dead so PERSONALLY. Ready to ATTACK, right away with the name-calling, and it makes a person IGNORANT if they don't share your love of the Dead. And you call me a 'close minded individual'? You're the ignorant one, you pathetic clown. Where's all the peace and love, man? What would Jerry say? :^)
I'm all for peace and love man but when someone insults my fellow music lovers and I, I feel the need to defend myself and no, you can have your opinion but it makes you ignorant when you start insulting a band and its followers based on its music and if you dont like the dead why are you constantly on here?
dude come on. dont be a jerk and try to ruin everyones good time, no one wanted to see a comment like that, i mean the one before. i dont want to diss you because thats clearly what you are looking for, but really? are you that bored that you need to go piss of other people for fun? just back off and listen to the music you like and i will listen to mine. and hopefully the next time i listen to a song on youtube i wont see a hateful comment like yours.
I'm about to go see Cubensis, the ultimate GD tribute band in CA... this is such cool footage, I've never seen this B4!! This Grateful Dead just may catch on, h ah hah haahh,, ooohh, I miss Jerry!!
i saw ratdog last year and furthur two nights this year!!!!! gonna go see them in co,a nd nyc too!!! my buddy is a deadhead and got me into them! im hooked!!
I think its cool that the dead kept it pretty low key at woodstock, instead of playing a greatest hits like some of the bands. I mean, they played High Time which wasn't even recorded yet...
TC is def on keys for stephen, but i think it's pig on mama tried. the two songs seem to have distinctly diffrent sounding keyboard styles, and on mama tried, it sounds all sporadic, peircing, and wailing; a sound typical of pigpen. just a stab in the dark, though.
Great Hippie tunes, stoned and chilled...out in the nature with a tent and a sleeping bag, barefoot sleeping on the soft grass by a fountain beneath the stars..Freedom and Peace to all:)))
The Dead wouldn't let their set be in the Woodstock film because they thought they sucked. While not their best performance, I've heard them suck worse.
Well, in fact it's not a lie. It's well documented that the Dead refused permission for their performance to be in the Woodstock film. In fact they almost didn't play at all because they hadn't yet been paid, but yielded when the promoters threatened to announce why to the crowd. As Bob Weir said, "Woodstock was not our moment."
I agree that the Dead don't suck, but any band that plays that many shows is bound to have off nights, and I've got a box full of taped shows that prove it.
not entirely true. you left out that they werent allowed to play but they were going to. same with the who and someone else. but it was because their managers wouldnt let them till they got paid.
They only disappointment was getting shocked by rain-soaked electrical equipment and a performance they all agreed was their worst in their career. Doesn't appear all that bad here though.Much better than the 2009 Reunion Tour.

Even the Dead admitted they blew this one. Off key and sleep inducing here, but there were plenty of great nights.

BORE...ING! Music for dead heads. You'd have to be dead in the head to listen to this horse shit. You know what I think of the Grateful Dead? I'd be grateful if they were dead! Hey, what did one dead head say to the other dead head when they ran out of drugs? "This music sucks!" :^)
BigRedJonson 2 years ago
I am sorry to say Big Red that you have no fucking idea about music, talented musicians, and culture. Go listen to your gay Barney music while you stick your finger up your ass, apparently with your brain IQ it is the only thing you can do by yourself. The Dead is the best, and so are the dedicated followers. Cheers Deadheads!! RIP Jerry
ThePiguishi 2 years ago
Typical brain-dead Deadhead. You know nothing about me, about music, the music I listen to, my IQ or where I stick my finger. The Dead are capitalist pigs who have successfully marketed their shitty music, their image and their culture to morons like YOU. You've been conned, deceived, snookered, betrayed, played a fool. I've never met a Deadhead yet who wasn't an empty head and a big glass of water who couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag. Open your ears, the Dead SUCK. Peace man! :^)
BigRedJonson 2 years ago
You have to be kidding. They let the people record their concerts. I play lots of their covers and make a good living doing it. It is an acquired taste. I did not get it until I realized I had played the Europe 72 album for three months without listening to anything else.
boworl 2 years ago
its ok if you like shitty music, not everyone can be educated correctly in what good music is. but its just sad that you take the time to come on to this site, search up a grateful dead video, then talk shit on the music and their fans. get a life, or a ticket to the next jonas brothers concert. you just don't know what good music is, because if you did then you would at least respect the grateful dead, because without them none of your favorite bans would exist. thank you jerry, rip
pinkfloyd42819 2 years ago 2
My favorite band is the Beatles, so according to you, without the Dead the Beatles would not exist. Right? MUHAHAHAHAHA! Another typical brain-dead deadhead.
I came to watch this video because I heard of all the thousands of lousy Dead shows over the years, their performance at Woodstock was their lousiest of all. It's hard for me to say because I can't watch or listen to this boring shit for more than only a few minutes. Sorry but not everyone is in love with the Dead. Peace man :^)
BigRedJonson 2 years ago
ok well im glad that you actually like a good band, but to be an educated music fan, you need to at least respect the grateful dead, you dont have to be in love with them. You're just too provincial to see their importance. and all your comments about "typical brain-dead deadheads simply expands your ignorant image that, sadly, you so easily portray on here. yes the woodstock performance wasnt the best but that was one performance out of nearly 3 thousand shows, open your eyes
pinkfloyd42819 2 years ago
BigRedJonson 2 years ago
funny, i love all those bands you just listed, i love all good music in general. and we take it personally because the band becomes a personal thing after a while, much more so than any other band ive ever listened to. i couldnt care whatsoever if you dont like the Dead just respect them, and it doesn't seem like you respect them when you come on here and say the Dead sucks. the peace and love is all here, to me it seems like you just cant see it. dont be so stubborn man, damn.

funny thing about your peace and love thing is that hippies weren't the peaceful stoned out idiots you think, that is flowerchildren who were usually considered posers than, sure they were all against vietnam cause it was totally wrong but if you got in a hippies face he/she wouldnt turn the cheek they would still beat the shit out of you i mean the fucking hells angels provided security at woodstock. and dont be pissed at deadheads for actually standing up for what they believe in man
ChillBroify 2 years ago
Are you STONED or just STUPID? Hell's Angels did NOT provide security at Woodstock. Hell's Angels members were hired by the Rolling Stones to provide security at the Altamont concert in December 1969. Gotta lay off the drugs you've done enough brain damage already MAN...
BigRedJonson 2 years ago 8
try not to be so abrasive man, that guy was obviously confused, but the dead were known for using Hell's Angels as security. Rolling Stones got the idea from The Dead. Its a shame that The Stones didnt think about the difference between the 2 styles of music and how much it can change people. But, as far as i know Hell's Angels were not in Attendance as security...i dont think there WAS any security at woodstock ;)...
Phished123 2 years ago
Listen god damn it, you are right, the Hell's Angels were not security at Woodstock, but the Stones didn't hire the Angels for Altamont, the Dead did. As far as the two styles of music go, the Angels were kicking asses before the music ever started. Marty Balin got knocked out by an Angel during the Airplane's set and the Dead decided not to play. I believe they left the racetrack, so really their a bunch of chicken shit douche bags who were partially responsible.
jjevans2009 2 years ago
actually, the stones did lmao
streetlghtmanifetish 2 years ago
Errrr, the Dead's manager Rock Scully, warned the Stones not to use the Hells Angels. The Stones used a British version of the Angels in England but they were a far cry from the American version. It wasn't supposed to be at Altamont to begin with but Jagger opened his yap, let out the secret and ruined any chances of a free concert in Golden Gate Park. That is what they really wanted to do. a free concert to bring all the gangs together to try to bring some peace to the Bay area.
Barbikat 1 year ago
Bullshit. Scully moved the show to altamont because of Jagger's big mouth and then he hired the Angels. There are interviews from 40 years ago where he states this. Garcia was friends with the Angels. There is a movie where Garcia and Merl Saunders play for the Angels on a river boat. You can rewrite history all you want but facts are facts.
jjevans2009 1 year ago
TRUE THAT. and the only reason the hells angels were ever involved with Timoty Leary is because he was trying to expand their mind. All you fucks are always trying to find something wrong with something to pure. Tell me what you believe in man, tell me... do you have feelings as well? or do you just hide them beneath all your hate.
Zerivaan 1 year ago
The Hell's Angels weren't involved with Leary, they were involved with Ken Keasey and the merry pranksters. And Keasey never really liked Leary because he thought he was pretentious. The pranksters weren't into acid because they thought it was a religious experience, they were into it because it was a good time. Also there is plenty wrong with everything. The Dead and the pranksters did some fucked up things.
jjevans2009 1 year ago
@BigRedJonson Actually Jerry Garcia suggested using the Hell's Angels because when he was part of the Merry Pranksters he befriended some of them because the Pranksters turned the Angels to LSD.

Who the hell are you to talk about someone else's knowledge of music? I'll ret money on the fact that I have far more knowledge about music theory and history than you. I agree with BigRed. Dead heads are very limited in their appreciation for other music other than the Dead. Not everyone likes the Dead and they don't have to. And they don't have to respect anyone just because they have fans who like them. I for one do not respect Brittany Spears in the least and yet she has millions of fans.
jjevans2009 1 year ago
your a douche bag and id like to add that I've never taken any drugs and still recognize that the grateful dead are makers of great music and honestly only an ignorant person would wish death upon a group of people based on their opinions of their music please don't respond to this other than this comment I would like not to interact with such a close minded individual such as your self

BigRedJonson 2 years ago
I'm all for peace and love man but when someone insults my fellow music lovers and I, I feel the need to defend myself and no, you can have your opinion but it makes you ignorant when you start insulting a band and its followers based on its music and if you dont like the dead why are you constantly on here?
RayRay51491 2 years ago
dude come on. dont be a jerk and try to ruin everyones good time, no one wanted to see a comment like that, i mean the one before. i dont want to diss you because thats clearly what you are looking for, but really? are you that bored that you need to go piss of other people for fun? just back off and listen to the music you like and i will listen to mine. and hopefully the next time i listen to a song on youtube i wont see a hateful comment like yours.

sorry skynyrd its def TC on the keys.
I think its cool that the dead kept it pretty low key at woodstock, instead of playing a greatest hits like some of the bands. I mean, they played High Time which wasn't even recorded yet...
timhorpo 2 years ago
no i looked it up its pig not tc
caseyjones67 2 years ago
TC is def on keys for stephen, but i think it's pig on mama tried. the two songs seem to have distinctly diffrent sounding keyboard styles, and on mama tried, it sounds all sporadic, peircing, and wailing; a sound typical of pigpen. just a stab in the dark, though.

The Dead wouldn't let their set be in the Woodstock film because they thought they sucked. While not their best performance, I've heard them suck worse.
favorsham 2 years ago
thats a lie. and they dont suck. just the opposite .
psychedelicssss 2 years ago
Well, in fact it's not a lie. It's well documented that the Dead refused permission for their performance to be in the Woodstock film. In fact they almost didn't play at all because they hadn't yet been paid, but yielded when the promoters threatened to announce why to the crowd. As Bob Weir said, "Woodstock was not our moment."
I agree that the Dead don't suck, but any band that plays that many shows is bound to have off nights, and I've got a box full of taped shows that prove it.
favorsham 2 years ago 2
not entirely true. you left out that they werent allowed to play but they were going to. same with the who and someone else. but it was because their managers wouldnt let them till they got paid.
