Thanks for this post. I did not know Benny recorded for Columbia. As a kid it was always RCA Victor and those records were more expensive than Decca and Bluebird so it had to be really great to justify a buy.
Wow! This was one of my Dad's favorite Benny Goodman records. Whenever he'd play it, he & I would dance to this great number. He loved the trumbone solo and of course, Benny's great playing. Thanks so much for uploading these great songs from the past.
We used this as our recessional. The funny thing was, all during the intro, the wedding party was exiting the room. Right as our pastor, last to leave, put his foot out to walk down the steps, Peggy Lee began singing "Grab your coat, get your hat...". The guests cracked up! He kind of smiled, cocked his head and kept walking. <3
thanks pal for posting this song. love these classic music from the early half of the 1900's. since watching this video ive been singing this when in my car and walking down the street.
Thanks for posting this, I like also the sound of the record, sounds like direct, no filtering, which is in my opinion the best way... Looking forward to hear Paul Robeson with Whiteman, I have never heard it.... Thanks again and keep posting!
Thx a lot "cdbpdx" for this wonderful upload. This is THE version that populated our ears (and hearts) in the 1950s - at least for me. In the numerous different lyrics available, "theguitarguy" has the one that matches your upload; Peggy (here singing 1:15-2:17) only removes the "and" before "get your hat").
Last Saturday, I picked up a collection of about 2000 78s off Craigslist here in Portland. There were hundreds of 'Oh, WOW!' records in that group, including a like new 12" 78 featuring Paul Robeson singing Ol' Man River with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. That one knocked my socks off! I'll post it soon. My main group of recordings, about 4000 tunes, can be found by Googling 'cdbpdx' and '78records'.
@cdbpdx my dad was born to a family that always loved music, and them, and there parents would buy records all the time.sooner or later they grew tired of them and passed them down to my dad. eventually, my dads records plus my grandparents have now eqated to over 1400 records from 1930s to the 1980s, with many of the most famous bands of all time. he even has the white album, origional.
My favorite version of this song.... by FAR!!
