I raised a eyebrow too when I first discovered these guys, but rather than lashing out I researched their origins. The early church hierarchy wore long robes such as these to keep warm in the cold stone temples that the lived in, and Religion (and cults) adopted the style for their own ceremonial purposes.

Thunder, the past souls bowling, lighting, a match being struck, ect ect ect. This is not meant to be taken Literally. Aside from the obviously metaphorical meaning of the song's lyrics, the actual line is "I know there'll be no more tears in heaven", so Clapton wasn't even suggesting that there would be tears in heaven.
