Seriously, I can't stop listening to this! The most remarkable thing is his legato line; it almost sounds like he sings the whole aria on just a couple of breaths. Juan Diego should really record a Mozart album!
Definitely great singing. Always in tune, great phrasing and he feels the words he is singing. Sure, pronunciation could be better but in terms of refinement, to me this is second only to Wunderlich, at least from what I have heard on YouTube.
Juan Diego Florez is doing very good as far as the language is concerned - but he is certainly doing (almost) as good as Fritz Wunderlich when it comes to the musical interpretation of this devine Morat aria!

His interpretation is not well suited for his own vocal temperament. After listening to Wunderlich,Winbergh and Volker..........he is just another tenor at this. For someone in a world class as he is should possess better diction.
Bello bravo maestro !
Only one reservation: You can hear that he doesn't understand the german text - he lacks nuances. So I'm waiting for his Ferrando, Don Ottavio, Idomeneo (!).
Beautiful voice and technique indeed, although the hall acoustics do not flatter it. He may be the best Mozart tenor of the present age, judging by what I hear here.
@reribus He is going to sing more Mozart and he is a smart singer, may be he will learn that soft technique? Or he will not have that flexibility needed for Mozart? His coloratura approach shows in his singing. But classy anyway.
I always get asleep when I listen to this aria, except in the case of Fritz Wunderlich. It is a very difficult piece, you must put a lot of feeling, but at the same time your style should remain "classical". I stayed awake this time, so I think Flores makes a great Tamino.
this is one of the best performances since Fritz Wunderlich's 1965 (and apart from the technique, the language is also almost perfect, I can understand every single word as native German speaker)
He has very little occasion to sing in German. I am sure if he sang more arias or songs in German he would make sure his German is near perfect. He is a perfectionist.

I agree with you! He does have a wonderful voice, but his diction leaves much to be desired. I suspect he will also grow into a fuller control of his very beautiful instrument.
Madcap Soprano, Brave Tenor Enliven Donizetti Opera in London
Warwick Thompson, Bloomberg News, 12 January 2007
The brave tenor given the Olympic task of hurling out the famous top Cs is Juan Diego Florez, and when he does you know that you're in the presence of one of the greatest tenori di grazia (``graceful tenors'') of our time
The lithe Florez -- who fortunately isn't asked to do much silly stage business -- continues to astonish the Met audience every time he eases into an Ervino aria. His early "Son geloso del zeffiro errante" is as effortless as the zephyrs he claimed to envy for their proximity to Amina.
I have to agree with some of you in terms of diction. It definitely could be worse (Barbara Hendricks singing French for example), but there are times were it seems the diction is getting in the way of the voice. Good performance, but his voice didn't seem to comfortable.
I have to agree with Operasinger1024. This Latin beau does not sound German enough for this. I don't know why that should be important, but it is. Too much sunshine in the voice.
What is the "German" sound like? What is he supposed to do in order to sound more "German"? Too much sunshine in the voice? Oh dear. This is the type of nit-picking that does not make sense. It is usually written when one can't find any reasonable objection to slate the performance.
Sigh. . . this is not the repertoire he should sing. While he is singing technically flawlessly, he doesn't sound German and he is singing this aria as if it were in Italian. The feel of the language is incredibly different. Mozart knew this which is why all of his vocal music, no matter the language is composed for THAT language and shouldn't be sung the same as Italian or French.
Yeah, for me though, Mozart is always about perfection, especially in diction! In a way, Mozart is easy because you know what is expected of you....pefection lol! If can't achieve it, don't sing it. Beauty of tone alone just doesn't cut it! I know I'm being harsh...have a go at me if you like ;)
Have you heard a great performance by this singer live, without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add to the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever. Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too.
How I wish I could have been there to hear Farinelli entrance an audience with the power of a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
Flores sung this afternonn at the MET (La Somnambula) to thundering applause (Saturday afternnon radio transmissions on PBS. He did not use a mic at the above performance of Zauberfloete, I am pretty sure. He has exceptional control and belcanto ability - probably # 1 in the world for this repertoire. You may be able to see him soon on TV (PBS stations - not all are participants) in today's Somnambula performance, live from the MET.
Fulfilling all expectations and then going beyond them, Juan Diego Flórez's return to Covent Garden for the theatre's first production of Rossini's Matilde di Shabran since 1854 was a complete triumph..
This man is a beautiful singer. Great voice and technique. I'm still working on this aria, my voice is older and heavier. Juan Diego Florez is certainly an inspiration.
This aria needs a lighter tenor voice than the Puccini and Verdi arias, but not that light. the tenor voice should be sort of in between. JDF's voice is not "masculine" enough for this aria.
Wow ... tough call ... Fritz Wunderlich or Juan Diego Florez ... Well ... I consider myself lucky to have BOTH available to listen to ... Exquisite singing from both wonderfully talented gentlemen ... Thank you Onegin for postin this.
well, it is good you mention you are a tenor because you are not famous for belonging to the most intelligent people around. I woul suggest to listen a little bit more around
I dom't care his not german accent.Put after having enjoyed Wunderlich Tamino, for me is imposible to compare with Florez.Florez has a marvellous voice, but Wunderlich IS Tamino, great, sensitive, lyrical... I hesitate there is a tenor comparable with Wunderlich Tamino. Imrproving the perfection is simply impossible.
I don't carte his not german accent but I agree with WagnerNietzsche. He is a very good tenor and has a marvellous voice, but I think that a singer that can be compared with Wunderlich's Tamino is not still born. Wunderlich is not "the best Tamino", he simply is "Tamino", the only one, not comparable, great, divine.
Please stop arguing against his german diction. Of course he has an accent, he's peruan, but it is nowhere strong, nor does it at any time endanger the comprehensibility! And that's what matters after all: that you understand every word without textbook. This is the case for Florez here, and more so for him than for many many german singers... And to be honest, even our beloved Wunderlich had an idiom... Just enjoy his voice and musicianship.
I do not know you hve to have Mozart ONE way! I wish Juan Diego sang more and more Mozart. And then he would be more acquainted to the style as well, but the technique and musicality is perfect! German needs some improving, but hey .... has he even sung the role? NO ... so give him a break!
The comparison to Fritz Wunderlich is useless and boring. Wunderlich is widely accepted to be the "best" Tamino ever, this aria remains his masterpiece and today's reference. But it finally was Wunderlich's genuin repertoire, and it isn't Florez's... Florez can be considered as the world's best light Rossini-Tenor these days (and certainly is better in this repertoire than Wunderlich was, to turn around the comparison). And Mozart is something w a y different!!
In fact, I was astonished at how well he sings this aria after all (still one of the most difficult of all lyrical opera repertoire!). Yes, he does some weird things, but his timbre and his legato are exquisite! And his german diction is quite well, too. I'm German, and I understand every single word he sings. Some consonants here and there could be pronounced better, but for a peruan belcanto-singer, this is without belmish! So: A very good rendition of this challenging aria, in my opinion.
His pitch is flawless, perfect. This is no small accomplishment for a champion opera singer. Plenty out there spend half their lives scooping half octaves to find the score.
His voice is boyish, lacking warmth and richness. He's obviously a precocious lad with a great talent, but like a fine wine, it takes years to mature and develop the richness.
Suits him better than i thought! You can't compare Fritz and Juan they are different singers with diffrent colours and more importantly different fachs (Voice density)! Both performances have one thing in common...they are both beautiful in their own unique way!
He clearly listened to Fritz Wunderlich in that piece. Am I allowed to say that in spite of all the flaws (dynamics, accent) he moves me more than Wunderlich oddly enough.
Juan Diego Florez is a great tenor no doubt about that. And part of the aria is sung beautifully. But he also does strange things here: he makes big portamenti upwards many times, and his German is - especially in the beginning - way below acceptable levels.
On his German, the only thing I can say is that he isn't overly heavy on the consonants and he doesn't darken the hell out of the sound - both fine with me as I think they are things that are mistakenly seen as good German opera singing (although the consonants DO have to be audible, linguistically, of course). As for portamentau, well sung music is a flow, not a series of unconnected notes, as with the physical limits of some instrumental music. Not of it is objectionable here, I don' think...
You "professional bitches" make me laugh: morons who claim Florez (or Callas or whomever) can't sing.
You clowns usually have ONE favorite singer and loudly proclaim all others worthless. Stop being so CHILDISH.
Tenors are as different as roses - would we want only ONE color of rose? The light tone, delicate vibrato, and ringing high C's of Florez are superb. So is Domingo's dark tone and power. I love them both.
Music needs all kinds of tenors, not just one kind! Bitches, get a life! :-)
God Bless you person. I totally agree with you. Of course there are people that perform certain arias or composers better than others. But that is to be expected, it's life.
Criticizing a person's God given voice is quite unacceptable.
NEW YORK (AP) — Rewarding a rare encore with an even rarer standing ovation in midperformance, Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez as the lovesick Tonio who brought the crowd to its feet late in Act 1 on Monday night by sailing with ease through the nine high Cs in the aria, "Pour mon ame" — and then singing it a second time.Florez, whose agility and elegance in the lighter bel canto repertory is unsurpassed among today's singers, was rock-solid as he punched out those high C's.
Yet for sheer beauty of tone, he surpassed himself in his Act 2 aria, "Pour me rapprocher de Marie". Flores'encore was apparently the first for a solo performer at the Met since Luciano Pavarotti repeated the aria "E lucevan le stelle" in Act 3 of Puccini's "Tosca" in 1994. And it's practically unheard of for the audience to rise to its feet in the middle of a performance.
I love this song, and his voice. It must be said, however, that i prefer his voice with Italian. Probably because of all those perfectly pure vowels. His voice just sparkles. Got to love him.
yeah, this is the first time i've heard him on german and i gotta agree. he's excellent though, this is something he can surely work out.
the hum, yeah, some singers do this to quickly get their "placement" correct and secure. this could be because he doesn't feel as comfortable with the german. i'm guessing that to be th case since i haven't heard him do this before. but again, i'm not positive!
also i dont get why his diction isnt good on "ich wurde sie.." the 'u' in 'wurde' is thesame exact vowel as the french 'u' which he does just fine. i dont get it! he is capable just needed some better coaching for german i guess
Sorry, but I have to say they are right. He has a strong accent. You can believe me, I´m from Austria. But vocally it was excellent. Haven´t heard this aria that good in years (live of course)
I hate to contradict you WagnerNietzsche, but it may be you who has a strong accent, being from a country whose native tongue is German for which there are many dialects. I have been very critical of Florez in the past, but this is great singing...phrasing, beauty and yes, diction are all nearly flawless in this very difficult aria.
Beautiful boy, just not his aria. German, Mozart (to a degree,) Tamino, it's just not there in the singer to begin with. Nothing wrong with that, just who he is and what he brings to the table. But by no means unenjoyable.
I wish I was. Improve his singing? Perhaps you'd like to explain specifically what needs improvement? Perhaps you'd like to share that brilliant comment with every critic and audience member at Scala Milano? See how far you get. So yes, I am looking forward to your critique. As far as the other peons here are concerned, you can think whatever you like, because none of you actually matter.
Ah yes, you're from Chile. That explains the comment more fully. Chileans are jealous and resentful of any Peruvian that makes it, they want all the credit and adulation for themselves. You've got a dark, shitty history concerning your treatment of Peru, and now it's your turn to squirm and watch him succeed. Stick to making lousy wine, and grilling pigs over an open pit.

I don't think his diction was that great, honestly. Notes are beautiful though.

Mejor es imposible
Emecé, El Diario Vasco, 29 May 2008

Emecé, El Diario Vasco, 29 May 2008
cucuchi1 2 years ago
Have you heard a great performance by this singer live, without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add to the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever. Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too.
How I wish I could have been there to hear Farinelli entrance an audience with the power of a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
CharlotteinWeimar 2 years ago 3
Flores sung this afternonn at the MET (La Somnambula) to thundering applause (Saturday afternnon radio transmissions on PBS. He did not use a mic at the above performance of Zauberfloete, I am pretty sure. He has exceptional control and belcanto ability - probably # 1 in the world for this repertoire. You may be able to see him soon on TV (PBS stations - not all are participants) in today's Somnambula performance, live from the MET.

Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 24 October 2008
Fulfilling all expectations and then going beyond them, Juan Diego Flórez's return to Covent Garden for the theatre's first production of Rossini's Matilde di Shabran since 1854 was a complete triumph..

This aria needs a lighter tenor voice than the Puccini and Verdi arias, but not that light. the tenor voice should be sort of in between. JDF's voice is not "masculine" enough for this aria.

Yeah, I agree. But JDF still kicks butt in this aria. I would watch him in the Magic Flute any day.

DoloresAllende 3 years ago
I don't carte his not german accent but I agree with WagnerNietzsche. He is a very good tenor and has a marvellous voice, but I think that a singer that can be compared with Wunderlich's Tamino is not still born. Wunderlich is not "the best Tamino", he simply is "Tamino", the only one, not comparable, great, divine.
DoloresAllende 3 years ago

ArturoPVLondon 3 years ago 2
The comparison to Fritz Wunderlich is useless and boring. Wunderlich is widely accepted to be the "best" Tamino ever, this aria remains his masterpiece and today's reference. But it finally was Wunderlich's genuin repertoire, and it isn't Florez's... Florez can be considered as the world's best light Rossini-Tenor these days (and certainly is better in this repertoire than Wunderlich was, to turn around the comparison). And Mozart is something w a y different!!
tenchinhanuso 3 years ago 2
In fact, I was astonished at how well he sings this aria after all (still one of the most difficult of all lyrical opera repertoire!). Yes, he does some weird things, but his timbre and his legato are exquisite! And his german diction is quite well, too. I'm German, and I understand every single word he sings. Some consonants here and there could be pronounced better, but for a peruan belcanto-singer, this is without belmish! So: A very good rendition of this challenging aria, in my opinion.
tenchinhanuso 3 years ago
Well, this just shows us that Florez will be ready for this repertoire well into his 40's
His "Otello" will be Werther if he is lucky. but apart from the size of his voice, in my humble opinion he is terribly boring.
Valdul31 3 years ago
His pitch is flawless, perfect. This is no small accomplishment for a champion opera singer. Plenty out there spend half their lives scooping half octaves to find the score.
His voice is boyish, lacking warmth and richness. He's obviously a precocious lad with a great talent, but like a fine wine, it takes years to mature and develop the richness.
lusciousbobby 3 years ago 2
Suits him better than i thought! You can't compare Fritz and Juan they are different singers with diffrent colours and more importantly different fachs (Voice density)! Both performances have one thing in common...they are both beautiful in their own unique way!
apidgen 3 years ago 3
He clearly listened to Fritz Wunderlich in that piece. Am I allowed to say that in spite of all the flaws (dynamics, accent) he moves me more than Wunderlich oddly enough.
negzago 3 years ago
You are allowed to say that in this aria Juan Diego Florez moves you more than Wunderlich.
There is a small difference. Juan Diego Florez is a good tenor. Fritz Wunderlich was a great tenor - right up there with Bjorling.
dollenberg 3 years ago
Juan Diego Florez is a great tenor no doubt about that. And part of the aria is sung beautifully. But he also does strange things here: he makes big portamenti upwards many times, and his German is - especially in the beginning - way below acceptable levels.
martello79 3 years ago
On his German, the only thing I can say is that he isn't overly heavy on the consonants and he doesn't darken the hell out of the sound - both fine with me as I think they are things that are mistakenly seen as good German opera singing (although the consonants DO have to be audible, linguistically, of course). As for portamentau, well sung music is a flow, not a series of unconnected notes, as with the physical limits of some instrumental music. Not of it is objectionable here, I don' think...
colino72 3 years ago
Well sung, I wasn't sure if he would manage the long sustaining legato phrases of Mozart, but he did-this aria suits his voice quite well.

Andante735 3 years ago
Yet for sheer beauty of tone, he surpassed himself in his Act 2 aria, "Pour me rapprocher de Marie". Flores'encore was apparently the first for a solo performer at the Met since Luciano Pavarotti repeated the aria "E lucevan le stelle" in Act 3 of Puccini's "Tosca" in 1994. And it's practically unheard of for the audience to rise to its feet in the middle of a performance.

Not bad for someone who needs to listen to the advice of the critics. :))

5nick3r5 3 years ago
yeah, this is the first time i've heard him on german and i gotta agree. he's excellent though, this is something he can surely work out.
the hum, yeah, some singers do this to quickly get their "placement" correct and secure. this could be because he doesn't feel as comfortable with the german. i'm guessing that to be th case since i haven't heard him do this before. but again, i'm not positive!

also i dont get why his diction isnt good on "ich wurde sie.." the 'u' in 'wurde' is thesame exact vowel as the french 'u' which he does just fine. i dont get it! he is capable just needed some better coaching for german i guess

As far as the other peons here are concerned, you can think whatever you like, because none of you actually matter.
