  • I wanna ask u guys this question. Do you think Margaret has already in love with John the first time she saw him and kept denying it because of his attitude towards "the little people" or really hated him at first but grew to love him? Cause I think her actions during the riots showed that she was in love with him already as he was with her.

  • @ftwi1

Because she is a bit of a contradictory. She says that she does not fancy him, yet she stares at him often, and it looks to be very longing. She helps him during the riot, risking her life to do so, yet she says that she does not even like him. I think she certainly was interested enough to care for him, not love. Love grew as time went on, especially when he helped he near the end.

  • @ftwi1 I think there was ATTRACTION on her part the first time they met, but by the time of the riots she was definitely in love with him. Noble as she is, I think it takes a lot of love for someone to risk her own life for someone else.

  • I don't like Mrs. Thornton much, but she speaks the truth!!

  • @autumnsoliloquy

    What do you think?

  • Mr Bell is like a Victorian Willy Wonka

  • Much as I love Mr Thornton, I'd marry Mr Bell anyday.

  • Ahhh Mr. Bell. You sir have a better grasp on things than her own father has. LOL!

  • I love Sinead Cusack's portrayal of Hannah Thornton. Her expressions, the way she speaks...she just brings the character to life. I didn't like Mrs. Thornton in the book but I love her in this series. She comes across as a hard and proud woman at first, but she has a great deal of courage, integrity and honesty and she loves her son fiercely. This scene is one of my favorites. You can totally see John's vulnerability and Hannah's tenderness, something they would never show to the outside world.

  • 0:13

    Pig heads???? Really????

  • He so stole a glance at Margaret at 8:16!

  • the mom is like any mom, she wants the best for her son.

  • I think Mrs. Thornton represents the struggle every mother goes through when she sees her child taken away from her by someone else. And she is very true, mother's love is for life while romantic love to call it that....not so much. That is why the high rates of divorce nowadays. We fall in love, but we change all through our lives, and unfortunately, even though living together, it doesn't seem we change in the same way. Love only lasts forever in romances.

  • "No one loves me..."

Mr. Thornton, dear, you should read the comment section.

  • @JessFeser lo0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0ollll i cant stop laughing at ur comment & u r so0o0o0o right

  • @JessFeser Truer words were never spoken. lol

  • @JessFeser made my day really.....

  • The street meeting is so awkward!

  • Mr. Bell, the shit-stirrer extrodinaire! How I love him :D

  • Everyone on here is saying that they would love to have lived in that time period but I don't think you guys realize what that truly means...life back then wasn't all about falling in love with dashing men in suits. Would you really want to live in a sexist society with no modern medicine or technology, squeezed into a 16 inch corset? I don't think so...

  • the music for this is beautiful :)

  • Mr Bell!!!! what a TROUBLEMAKER !!!

  • Richard Armitage get in my pants.

  • I don't understand why so many here criticize the mom. The mom raised him out of nothing and went through a lot together. And how well she has raised him! He's the biggest catch around. Of course she is protective of him because she knows he's not as tough as he appears. I adore mommy's boys. If a man can't love the woman who raised him, he can't love you enough.

  • @marybarton2011 yes but sometimes they love their mommies so much that they think no other woman can stand up to them..... this is sick...

  • @katarameneHayate No woman can precede the woman that gave birth to him. It's a hypocrisy for wives or girlfriends to think that way because they feel very differently once they have sons.

  • @marybarton2011 LOVE the way you think:

REASONABLE, but EMOTIONAL at the same time - Like it should always be!

  • i wish this was my life!!!!!1

  • Aaaahh, he was so disappointed and upset he walked off without his hat and gloves.

  • Great opening scene! Thorton pauses as camera pans to what seems a child's casket....A view of what the grave conditions the strike has caused!

  • mr.bell seems creepy...

  • @tinkertoes1000 He kinds of thinks Margaret is hot. But he also is too perceptive.

  • oh my god i just recognized miss latimer... claudia brown/jenny lewis!!! :D

  • @bbcseriesfan OMG I knew I recognised her from somewhere!! Lol I've been trying to figure it out for AGES! XD

  • it's kind of ironic that he says "no one cares for me but you" to his mother....just read a few of the comments this video is getting, mr. thornton! that'll raise your self-esteem! ;)

  • Just saying, men probably don't dress like this anymore because in addition to "emphasizing their hotness," it would also quite literally make them even hotter. Not everywhere is blessed with the temperate British climate. They may be wearing a waistcoat and tails, but they would also be sweating through them. Nobody wants that.

  • that scene with his mother is one of the most heartbreaking scenes i've ever seen....

  • I think all the people that wish to have been alive during this era, for I am one of them, prove that one wants what one cannot possibly have.

  • Mr. Bell is nice... he is a very entertaining person to be around and very insightful.

  • 4:04 "If you dont hate her than i must"

  • As Amanda says in "Lost In Austen," it's the manners and the respect of the time that most appeals to us. I certainly wouldn't trade my ability to choose for the restricted role of homemaker (not that I don't respect women who do make that their life, it's just not the only role I want), but it would be thrilling for men to rise just because a woman entered the room. It would be nice if more men would open the door for women or at least respect women as more than eye-candy.

  • @s400435 that is sooo true. I love "Lost in Austen", as well as Austen novels and period pieces such as North and South, but it's the respect and chivalry that speaks to me. It absolutely makes my day when a guy holds the door for me, because I often find myself holding the door for them instead. I miss those values, and the way it shaped society. I'm all for women being independent and being able to choose for themselves, but I wish guys treated women with more respect like they used to.

  • Creepy mother needs a hobby.

  • i thought Margaret said that her friend was dead?

  • @carolmarzha24 dying...

  • i thought Margaret said that her friend was dead?

  • Its funny how many women wish to be alive in these eras, when in reality, a majority of women could only wait until they were married to someone, run a household and that was their life; their whole purpose. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but in the 21st century, women have so many other options, including that most women in Western society can marry for love... just something to think about.

  • @hrududu29 definitely true that women in the 21st century have a lot of options but thinking about it, the definition of "true love" these days is sometimes infatuation and not the real deal

  • @kathye239 good point. But I think with our view of these eras we like to think of Elizabeth Bennet, and Eleanor Dashwood, who got to marry for love. We forget about the majority of women at the time who couldn't afford to be romantic, such as Charlotte Lucas. I use to always think I was suppose to live in a different time, until I realized the blessings I have living in 21st Century North America, and saw my responsibly to use this gift to help others who don't have the opportunity.

  • @hrududu29

i think you're right. sometimes i also wish to live in that century. it seems romantic! ^^ but we forget the bad reality: it was rare that women were able to marry in love! and other things: medicine and technik, everything was at the beginning. people in those days often died just from a cold. the cities were full and smelled horrible, pieces of horse dung were everywhere! it wasn't as clean as in the movies. i don't wanna live there, i just want some of the manners nowadays! ^____^

  • He's really hot right? Or is it just me? *swooooon*

  • YOU"RE GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!!!!

  • one of the best productions of bbc ever

  • I thought, that at the begining, she was picking up her own gloves, meaning to go after him, but now i see that they are his gloves. she just wanted to hold some part of him. when we have a close up of his face walking down the street, he looks like he is going to commit suicide, not that i know what that looks like

  • I thought, that at the begining, she was picking up her own gloves, meaning to go after him, but now i see that they are his gloves. she just wanted to hold some part of him.

  • her fathers friend is such a trouble making nosey bastard! i cant stand him!

  • It's totally worth reading the book to understand the characters and get the real meat out of the romance. It was so full of intricacies that it would be a challenge to duplicate on screen. I'm having fun watching this film, though. And, yes, Mr. Thornton seems such a dizzying character.... he'd both vex me with his political/social views and melt me with that voice of his....anyways, back to the show :)

  • Poor guy. All that "she does not care for me" and it turns out he was right. Who would've thought? I guess i get that she has to be honest but she could've TRIED to be nicer about it. That "i do not like you i never have" i was thinking "YOU BITCH!"

  • So heartbreaking when he has to tell his mother she rejected him. Gah, I'm in love with the opening score. So beautiful. And I'm mesmerized with Richard Armitage's voice.

  • @yourtreat2 the you missed the big finale. Easy to stay awake because it kept you up with how it ended with a BANG! stby

  • @nsb5Q322 My impression was that the movie was a highly effective sleep aide.

WARNING! Do not operate heavy machinery, or drive after watching this movie.

Studies have shown this film causes brain damage if watched in full.

Pregnant mothers should be aware: This film can cause severe ADD or Autism.

  • omgg mr.bell is so interestin! in every way.

  • poor guy he poured his heart out and she stomped it. poor guy poor handsome guy poor sexy man.

  • Oh dear Mr Bell! You're such an old lady with your meddling ways.

  • Ahhh, Mr. Bell, what a riot, but i love his character...

  • Mr Thornton is HAWWWTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @waterfront1924 Well Duh lmao but really men in those days were more formal , and less cocky and douche bags

  • I love Mr. Thornton's mom. She is hardcore!

  • Aww, he´s so hurt. I´d love to cheer him up :D

  • i didn't get from the book that Mr. Bell was such a trouble maker, but i love it!

  • @wraithsonwings09 I know, he really does stir up quite a fuss :D

  • Mr Bell, how rude.

  • seeign this makes me sad i was born in 21st century...seriously i'd have LOVED to be born in this old era...family values, modesty..it's interesting how what now seems "fantasy" to us used to be the reality of our ancestors - and how i wish it was our reality as well!

  • Comment removed

  • @HProxEDWARDrox I think if you actually lived in those times you would think very differently. Living was very hard, not knowing if you would be able to feed your family. Women had no rights, the whole politics of marriage was ridiculous. I think its probably better to say you wished some elements of this time still existed.

  • @LCMac3 Exactly my sentiments. Often, as fans of these Classics, we come to romanticize what must have been a most trying time for the majority.

  • @LCMac3 I totally agree... it was dirty, smoky, the sewer was the street, trash was everywhere- the industrial revolution was a tough time even for the wealthy...

  • @HProxEDWARDrox

women had no rights - and if their fathers or husbands were not liberal minded, no say in any matter.

modesty and values? the men could visit gambling joints and whore houses and would still be considered gentlemen - but the family honour would lie between the women's thighs - or rather depend on her keeping them closed...

  • @HProxEDWARDrox yeah it would have been lovely - if you had been a rich white man. i'm 100% sure that it freaking sucked for everyone else who wasn't, and that is why it is no longer "a reality". and don't forget about the high mortality and disease rates, no running water or electricity or any modern conveniences. get a grip, people. this is FICTIONAL.

  • With a mother like that, no wonder Thornton became such a strong man. Only lionesses breed lions.

  • ouch to Margaret at 8:26 then the glare!!

Damnit why are men so sexy when they're angry!!??

  • I am really liking this.

  • I love the music it goes perfect with the diferent scenes. Thanks for posting !

  • in those times people didn't get to know each other too much before getting married. actually young people were definitely not allowed to spend time together without a chaperone. In the movie Margaret is represented as much more independent than she could have been in those times. I don't think women were allowed to walk around by themselves wherever and whenever they wished.

  • @fdtk77 It says in the book she has to get used to going out alone in Milton because in London she always had a servant with her. She does do it in Milton, but it is true walking alone would have been something an upperclass woman did not do if she could afford a servant to accompany her.

  • @fdtk77 It does say in the book that Margaret isn't used to walking alone and always had a servant with her in London. She does walk alone in Milton but that is a result of the family's financial situation, they are too poor to afford a servant to go with her.

  • How can Mr. Thorton be in love with Margaret that quickly, he hasn't had a chance to get to know her really and he is already propossing... how can that be??

  • @katalina125 In every movie they fall in love very quickly, and I did not know how is that possible. And I do not know now. That is because they have to show everything in a few hours. And in fact they show a few months or weeks in one hour. ;)

  • @katalina125 My bros say a man knows within 5 min. of talking to a woman. But then again, they are extraordinary men.

  • I love what the mother says: "your sorrow is mine. if you won't hate her, I will". so true and she's so brave to asay it out loud. she's a lioness.

  • its amazing how much this is like pride and prejudice. love it!!!!!!

  • I wonder when people stopped bowing and curtsying to each other :P

  • awww...Mr. Thornton you are good enough!

  • i'm so tired of Margaret always looking back.

  • I love this story. It is very similar to my situation. I was the one who fell in love with my father's friend. when I confessed my love to him, he treated me worse than Margeret did to thornton.well, whatever, my ending is not going to be similar though.

  • oh Mr. Bell soo funny =)

  • Decent man that Mr. Bell. I wonder what his story is? Why he wants to see true love prosper? :) And Nights, that is a clever way of putting it. "He is a walking element of surprise." You sound like a writer. A good one. / I'm a sub and I have difficulties getting the guys to take off their hats let alone seeing them dress in anything but T-shirts. lol If they will take off their hats, their hair is greasy. ha Not always./ Go Mr. Bell!

  • Thornton thinks he's not goood enough for her, aw YOU ARE enough you ........... i'm so sad for him aw AAAWWWW. I JUST JUST..........

  • hmm, why don't men dress like that nowadays? it just emphasizes their hotness =)

  • @freakybrowneyes7 because they'd get beaten up on the tube!

  • @freakybrowneyes7: this dressing wud definitely emphasize men's hotness if they were to dress so today... today hotness is all abt how exposing ur clothes r...and hotness of a couple is all abt how x-rated scenes they get... but thornton looks way more hotter than any of our hotties today, and their couple has more sizzling chemistry than any x-rated makeout scenes today... the power of modesty at its best.. =)

  • @HProxEDWARDrox Couldn't agree more =)

  • @freakybrowneyes7 exactly my opinion :)

  • @freakybrowneyes7 totally agree

  • @freakybrowneyes7 Thank You, finally someone have the same view with me. =)

  • @beahuynh Haha, you're welcome! I just can't beleive that men don't get that more women would want them if they dressed more like Mr. Thorton rather than *internal shutter* The Situation...

  • @freakybrowneyes7

    yes. yes indeed!

  • At 8:01 Ann looks like "aw dammit, here comes the competition"...

I love Mr. Bell! He's a walking element of surprise.

Mrs. Thornton is so completely honest; you can see where John's integrity comes from. It's odd that the same harshness looks almost attractive on him, yet is so off-putting coming from her.

  • lol Mr Bell! he's always amusing himself vastly. Love his character, though I'm never quite sure what to make of him :)

  • what mr. thorntons first name?

  • @avalon2468

    John=)

  • friggin' hell grow a pair dude and leave your mummies side you're bloody 50

  • @khorsheed1347 i dont think he's that old maybe late 30's early 40's

  • @avalon2468

ahaha maybe a bit exaggerated....but anything over the age of 18 is old enough to be independent,

  • @khorsheed1347 im not saying that i just ment he didnt look 50 thats all :)

  • @avalon2468

Oh okay...as I said it was a bit exaggerated :)

  • seriously!! what is wrong with the mothers voice?!?!

  • I knew the minute they asked Margaret to come over, OH SHIT, AWKWARD.

  • The beginning with this magnificent music is simply tearing. Music goes quite in unison with RA's acting, imho. The sounds reflect his state of mind, heart, everything. It's a matter rather to be felt than to be explained, but I believe that John is distracted, dazed, etc, for the music gives me an additional, stronger notion of it. Then it seems to calm down, remaining merely with single piano tones. If someone will find a better metaphor for quiet, powerless despair, let me know.

  • @jangmiflower I just really wanted to shout at the screen: "but I LOVE YOU" XD

  • I love this series... I bought it and gave it to my sister in law I'm sure she will appreciate it like me.

  • I love this film, cannot remember how many times i've watched it

while i am sure it will definitely be less attractive without him

  • is it just me or is that mother-son relationship a tad too intense?

  • yeah it was definitley his gloves.

  • Nosy old Mr. Bell but he is a likable character. He seem to understand the conflict btw d 2 love birds better than any one

  • oohh i wanna be his mother and hold his face in me hands....

  • so funny how they say they will never talk about her again.. a promise he cannot keep :P

  • I wonder why margaret always wears that hat when she's out. because in the books she wears bonnets like the other woman. her coat also seems different from the other women.

not complaining though, she looks beautiful quite mysterious.

  • They did good casting. Bessie Higgins looks alot like her daddy.

And Mrs. Thorton is ABSOLUTELY perfect in every scene. Gorgeous. Steals it every time.

I could go on about everyone. everything. I love this movie.

  • She said that her friend, Bessy Higgins is dying! I guess that he spoke to Miss Latimer after Margaret refused him. Although, I never read the book, I figured that's what happened. Because when his sister married, he came out of the church with Miss Latimer. This is a great series!!! Love every minute of it!

  • i thought she said bessie died??

  • @BOKphilosophy no she said bessy is dying. Which means she's not dead yet.

  • I am confused. Is Mr. Thorton already over Ms. Hale because he walks away with Ann Latimer and she looks depressed when Ms. Hale walks their way Someone clarify the Mr.Thorton and Ann Latimer Situation for me please!

  • @MsNicoleBateman I wondered that too. But there is a lot cut here. And I don't remember it in the uncut version.

  • can sum1 plz tell me whts up with the blonde worker? they emphasize him a lot n i havnt read the book. is he important?

  • i cant tell if mr. bell is a good guy, or maybe a bad guy! hes always stirring up something scandalous!

  • all i could think when he was walking away was 'Look back, Look back, LOOK BACK!' I LOVE HIM SO much!

  • "No-one loves me...cares for me but you"

    AND ME!!!!

  • @dontstealmyvitaminis

    hahahahahahaha!

  • I'd just like to point out that P&P was written before N&S. ;)

  • I can't help but find Mr Bell an intriguing sh*tstirrer... hheeee

  • Oh, my God. Him saying that he's not good enough for her... that just broke my heart. Poor man...

  • Is something wrong with that lady's mouth ? I can barely make out a word she says

  • the music is so soothing...they're amazing actors.

  • Mr. Bell is quite the instigator! :)

  • @2009socalgal I agree he's a devlish little stirrer... I sorta like him for it though....

  • wow that whole rejection scene reminded me of Pride and Prejudice quite a bit! hmmm. oh those times...

  • In the part before this one, didn't Margaret tell Mr. Thornton that her friend Bessie Higgins died? Did I misunderstand something?

  • @streetwhereulive I was thinking that too. I thought she said she was dead?

  • @xTheno1Jenzx I hope that someone will clue us in about that.

  • @streetwhereulive Margaret said her friend Bessie Higgins is dying

  • @streetwhereulive yes, when she and thornton were arguing she said her friend died, but there's bessie, alive and well in act 3...

  • noooo a girl's love is NOT LIKE A PUFF of smoke changing with every wind.,.,,

  • Nothing wrong with being a momma's boy. If a guy can't respect his mother, how will be respect any other woman?

  • i think some of you are not so fair to Thorton. He's not a mama boy. Take in account for his circumstance... his mother was also his father.. and hearing the circumstances that befall his family, it only natural that he love and respect his mother. He respect and is thankful for all she have done for him that why he regard his mother's opinion so highly but not to the point that he cant do what he what he determine to do. and he defend Margaret when it's necessary.

  • Higgins is such a good man.... I love this movie. The story is so beautiful. Thanks for posting it.

  • My, Mr Bell is v observant isn't he. I always thought he was a bit insensitive in the book, I like him this way.

  • It's so hard not to love Richard! He's so handsome and such a good actor!!!

  • what was the thing that margaret pick up at 0:22? Is it a piece of cloth?
