at 2:17 i just wanted to say i know what kind of missile that is... It's a maverick AGM-65. reason i am pointing this out is those missiles are not small. stood up right nearly as tall as a grown man. those those rounds bursting look extremely powerful

It's a 35mm round my mistake. The skyshield doesn't have to use both guns to shoot a object down. It's a CIWS like the goalkeeper or phalanx. There's also a navy version like the skyshield the oerlikon millenium 35. I also think it holds more ammo but iam not sure. The navy version has 250 airburst rounds. And the controle system can handle 3 guns or 2 guns with one short range missile launcher.

It seems really good at shooting non-moving targets.  The age of gun based AAA is over when a bunch of cheap IR rockets can do the same job at greater range.

you cant use flare chaff or ecm ones the bullet is out of the gun its over.

SAR SAMs are used more commonly for shooting down aircraft with decoy dispensers than IR. Cruise missiles don't have them which is what SkyShield is really meant to defeat. IR rockets can handle that just fine, even USN thinks so with SeaRAM and France with Mistral.

@stalkingalizee IR is defeated with flares and chaff this system uses IR/Radar and visual aids to detect and defeat the target. If it can take an incoming missile or Laser Guided Bomb from reaching the target it well pays for it self.

@hubergeek IR isn't defeated by chaff at all. Bombs and missiles do not carry flares. AAA has proven ineffective which is why Skyshield has added a SAM module.

@hubergeek But at what cost? Skyshield costs $20 million per battery, of which only contains two guns. With limited range and only engaging one target at a time, a simple barrage attack would take it out. You can buy a MICA VL battery with 4X the range and engage 16 targets at once in 360 degrees.

@stalkingalizee You need more then just a missile system to protect the air and troops. Long range, medium range and short range air defense systems are necessary. The skyshield isn't used for destroying airplanes but mortars and artillery shells. You say that it isn't cheap, the system isn't but bullets are. With a missile defense system the battery is cheap (launcher,...) but the rockets aren't. Taking a mortar down with a 800.000€ missile isn't cheap and very difficult.

@stalkingalizee This is a very good system to counter attack small enemy projectiles. Also the radar is made for tracking small and fast objects. I know what you mean this system alone isnt good but with other systems it is. Aster 30 block 1 - 120km, Aster 30 block 2 +120km - ? = ballistic missiles,fighterjets,... NG crotale 15 km = cruise missiles,heli, UCAV's,... and the skyshield 4600m UAV's, mortars, artillery shells. that all together and you will have a VERY good anti air system. ;-)

Aster 30 covers the range from long, medium to SHORAD. The only thing it doesn't do is point defence. Skyshield is point defence, and limited at its engagement only engaging one target at a time.

@stalkingalizee You cant compare the Aster 30 to the skyshield. It's like comparing a assault rifle with a tank !? The Aster 30 is a missile system and the skyshield with 30mm rounds. The skyshield is used for protection against smaller threats like mortars,small UAV,105-155mm shells. You cant use the skyshield for long range air defense system and nobody does. And the SAMP-T is a shorad,medium,longe range air defense system using aster15 and aster30.

@stalkingalizee The skyshield and the SAMP T or not designed for the same task. The military bases has to be protected against all threats. Threats from the air and threats from the ground. Skyshield is made for the last one SAMP T for the first one. Aster 30 covers a large range but cant take out small threats like mortars it's more for larger objects. And also taking out a 600€ mortar fired from 8km away with a 800.000€ missile and a 120km range!?

Skyshield only has 20 rounds worth of bursts and it takes both guns on the target. Stopping a mortar attack by this system won't happen.

@stalkingalizee The skyshield radar unit can detect and track alot. The gun can only destroy 1 target at the time but it's very fast. When there should be a mortar attack and they shoot 30 mortars after eachother then the skyshiels would have no problem with that 2x15. But the Aster30 will 1 the objects are to small, 2 Aster30 has 3x8 launchers= 24, 3 it can only fire 16 missiles in a short time because the aster also works with 1 radar unit and 4 the high cost.
