  • that was phil poppin through there towards the end

  • love hearing jerrys voice

  • Wow! I'd never seen this!! :-)

  • Yup, letterman. Paul Shaffer on keys asking "you're saying WELL?"

  • nice soundboard

  • Wow, talk about your 6 or 7 degrees of seperation! When I was 18 years-old I got to rehearse for/with Paul Schaefer back when he was the music arranger for Saturday Night Live! I'm a Deadhead, this video is super emotional for me to see for the first time, the sincerest of thanks for posting!

  • its not about the sound and voice, i mean yes it helps, but its all about the feeling and emotion they put into the music they play

and jerry had pleeenty of both

    rip jerry!!!

  • Sing me back home.............Hair Peace

  • i was born three days before this practice/show..

  • rotolo---How is that fact relevant for any of the rest of our species.......???

  • @emmerfarro you nailed it !

  • @emmerfarro I wanted to know.

  • jerry ....the good ol days.

  • Haha, Bobby - "I had a good idea and it worked!"

  • nice

  • we love you jerry

  • that is the letterman show, the actual airing in on utube too. i heard back in the day the bands had to play with paul and the boys. even motorhead had to have em. that is a bad policy, other than that letterman rocks

  • wow over 20yrs ago

  • it's been 20 years.

  • This is good stuff. And the folks who commented they were 'mandated' to play with Paul (and Anton, and Will) - I'm not sure that's the case. Maybe the Dead dudes were just kickin' back? (I think Jerry mentions this was supposed to be their day off, in a string of Radio City gigs.

    my .02

  • That's true, Dylan was on in '85 and he was backed by the Cruzados.

  • wasn't that Anton? from the letterman band?

  • yes, its anton fig from the letterman band !

  • This was back in the days where a band HAD to play with Letterman's band, and thus members of the visiting band couldn't play, Real lame.

  • who is that guy on the left, w/ guitar

  • Bob Wier!

  • Great to see Jerry and Bob working things out...they sound great, even in rehearsal.

  • they sound great rip jerry

  • get out of the way buddy!!!! 2:10

  • thanks for the sweet video

  • SWEET!!! '89 was such a powerful year for the boys. Jerry at the top of his game.

  • i know! it really was. many people don't like brent, but i think he's amazing.

  • i swear all i see is Jerry and Bob constantly wiping their noses!! LOL!!

  • sweet

  • That was tight. Thank you, Thank you!!!

  • Love it!!!! Thanks!!!

  • I recorded that the night it aired. Someone took my tape. I have the audio, but the video of the show would be greatly apprechated !

  • I have this show on VHS. There's this tune, and an interview.

I like their version, it's a great tune.

  • PLEASE post the song they played live, i will be 4 eer grateful 2 u.

  • Don't have and won't. It is out here somewhere or was.

  • Dylan was at the Beacon Theater this night also. He was wearing a Gold Lame Suit, he left the show by walking out the side door to the street as the band finished Pillbox Hat

  • The boys sound good..

  • Thank you!

  • Where the heck is Paul?

  • He is with HIS band in THEIR dressing room...who the hell cares !!

  • He's right behind the keyboards, he starts asking a bunch of questions around 1:30

  • I remember this like it was yesterday. In the middle of one of my fav GD tours, Fall 89' remember bobbys bday on the 16th, the warlocks shows in hampton to open the tour, miami to end the tour and lets not forget Adam Katz who was murdered by security at the byrne arena.

  • Yeah, Garcia can't sing, Weir can't sing, Dylan can't sing, Neil Young can't sing... Michael Bolton can sing. Celine Dion can sing. That idiot on American Idol can sing. Who do you think is going to go down in history as more influential and talented artists? Dylan/Garcia/Young et al or Bolton/Dion/American Idol Idiot? I rest my case.

  • Jim Morrison couldn't sing and neither can I ...

  • i feel u have it completely backwards..man u never went THERE...outer space...Garcia etc Dylan, Lennon etc ...not Bolton! hes like Neil Diamond and some other horrific 'singers'...sure they may have better traditional voices but no acid soul janis!!! are u kidding!!! celine dion is so straight its boring etc u get my drift at all??? but each to their own

  • yeah he's only figuring out how the harmony goes when his backing..nothin wrong with that

  • ok. a great band can survive 30 YEARS without great singing because of other factors- great songwriting and instrumental ability. Trust me though, Brent could SING!

  • A great band can survive 30 years WITHOUT

  • yeah, damn dude. Bob Weir roars like a lion. He's more of a man than your father

  • I was at Letterman that night, and we waited on line outside the studio and we could hear them playing this over and over and over. They did jam on songs during commercials too. Sometimes for the whole break, but sometimes theyd stop to take care of studio stuff. It was a fun night, came right in the middle of a big run at Brendan Byrne. And relax on Bobby I think this is the ONLY time he ever sang lead on this song.

  • Weir -- he just plain old can't sing.

  • What are you talking about? Bob Weir's voice have as much to the Dead's sound as Jerry's did. And im sure it sounds a hell of a lot better then yours. How come I just see you ripping on the dead in your comments on a bunch of their video's. If you don't like it then just don't watch.

  • Non of the dead can sing. If you go back into time and hear jerry say if they could sound like the dead but have vocals like CSNY then they would have been a band. Sorry bob weir is not a vocalist he is a guitar player with occational back up vocals. It's what it IS !!!

  • jerry had a great voice, brent was awesome and bob still belts it out..the three of those guys together was magic..please stop commenting on your own video..you must be deaf!shhhhh!!!!!

  • @ThunderRoad1675 he is better with the dead...not on his own.

  • @lookherechump Saw Bob at Wanee this year, one of the best shows of the weekend.

  • @ThunderRoad1675 I completely agree, I loved Weir's tenor voice and how it worked so well with Garcia's, especially early on...

  • Ok. Well he still makes money using his voice, doesn't he? He can sing. He does. And he gets paid for it. Pretty impressive I think. What do you do that is impressive?

  • Weir is a lovely man and a has developed an interesting guitar style. Nobody's knocking the man -- just his voice which has limited range, is thin, lacks emotion and often modulates off key. He'd be the first to concur. Relax dude. Weirs reputation in rock history is secure enough not to be crushed by the occasional truthful comment on You Tube.

  • Alright. Whatever. Truth, Fiction. You control truth. I guess your reality is secure enough for you to dictate it as truth on youtube. Amazing, really. I disagree with you, though. I think he has a great voice. I think he can sing. I think he does sing. And I like it. A lot, actually. If you feel like giving him a lifetime of devotion I second that emotion.

  • Do you like the dead? I see your comments on other videos...all negative. I'm not mad at your comments, they may be true. But why talk crap. I dig that you tell it like it is, but jeeez, chill doooood. Then again, it is America. You're allowed to talk crap if you wish.

  • Dude, I so love the Dead. Just you have to admit they were uneven at best. Sorry to have bummed people with negative posts but it's sometimes frustrating to be a Deadhead when you know they were capable of such great things and so often disappointed. Peace out.

  • I film bands live that sing better than bob.

  • Nice. I remember seeing this when it was originally aired...not the rehearsal, of course. Thanks for posting it. I have the show on VHS somewhere still, I think.

  • this vid was on david letterman

  • Play it Paul!

  • I see ramrod & parrish setting up the gear. cool, thx for posting

  • whoa nice, I always dig behind the scenes footage

  • bob kinda ruins it on the chorus run thru

  • its rehearsel

  • DUH ? That's what he said...the run thru...

  • Gosh!! This reminds me how much I miss Sir Garcia!!!

  • yes it was letterman. I have the final performance on vhs.

  • Post it!!

  • I second that emotion !

  • who loves ya Cassy??? :)( i do)

  • i 'member watchin this the nite it aired! they were on the fall msg run. AWESOME!

  • awesome thanks alot man, this looks like it was for the letterman show, right
