  • It is easy to begin with a white background, and a lot of contrast

  • Yeah i have a comment... I have used this method many times and each freaking time the edge is surrounded by a kind of a fussy white niosy shape or line... I am THIS CLOSE (making signs with my fingers) to give up on this method... I have tried to find a solution - failed... HELP!! What am I doing wrong??!!

  • Dude, you're awesome. Thanks for this. Seriously.

  • thanks a million for this video!

  • Wow this this the type of video that I have been looking for it is straight to the point and does exactly what it says that it will do. I am a newbie in Photoshop and this was perfect and it did exactly what it promised keep up the good work.

  • Hi all....i'm a newbie in photo editing, and kinda have a problem with cutting out images....i'm trying to create a banner but the problem is the image i cropped using Polygonal Lasso Tool(PLT) appeared transparent when i tried to paste it on the new image.only the dashed outlines appeared but not the whole image itself..what should i do?is there any setting that i have to change to overcome this?Nice video BTW!!!

  • Awesome Job dude .i like this video .

  • Great Video...

  • This dosent work for my photos :(

    This was a easy photo...

  • first minute in and im lost lol how come his cs5 looks different then mine???

  • the contrast of the girl and the background is rather big, i tried this method on a photo without that amount of contrast and the result was that the quick select tool went to places i didn't want it to go. can you please help me and i believe shorttshack ask the same about 2 weeks ago.

  • @lostinmedellin I have other tutorials on our site at photoshopcafe that will help. Sadly, youtube won't let me add a link to a useful resource here

  • Excellent tutorial! You explained everything perfectly for me. I couldn't get a straight answer on how to use the refine edge tool and was ready to go back to using Extract on CS3, but not anymore! I will definitely check out your other tutorials if I need more help!

  • @eldusto84 Refine edge is the secret to making it all work

  • my quick select tool goes all over the place. Usually it ends up selecting the entire image. What am I doing wrong?

  • @shorttshack you can control the sensitivity by making the brush smaller. Also hold down the alt key to remove from a selection, I use that all the time as it's more sensitive to remove than to add to a selection

  • Thanks for the tutorial...I was able to follow without too many issues. Well done!

  • thanks for your explanation!!! have a good one.

    Juan Carlos from Mexico

  • Excellent tutorial, I've been using the old time consuming method of magic wand, masks and different brushes to select.

  • @madelvec There are a lot of trolls on youtube :)

  • OMFG! SUCH A PRO!

Do you believe it guys? he can cut a person from a picture of that person with a blank background!~

  • whenever i press refine edge then okay it goes back to normal....

  • @ThePinkotter of course, cause its a selection, if you hit delete it will erase the excess

    or add mask

  • I've used this tool about thirty times now and I still have problems with the background colour seeping through, no matter what the colour of the background it selects the hair no problem but it also picks up the colour cast of the background what am i missing here?

  • @57TheBoomer The knowledge that computers aren't perfect no matter what anyone says.

  • Thanks for this tut. Resolved the problem I had. I shot multiple models individually against a white background and needed to assemble them together on another background. Its worked out perfect! Thanks heaps.

  • Great video. Super informative. Thanks

  • in adboe photoshope cs5 the paint wonts stay in selection?

Paint is peeping out of the selection? Ive selected and area and I'm painting inside but when I paint the paint comes out of it going a bit blurrier. its still has the same outline but i don't want is to be coming out i guess a solution would be to to make the selection smaller and then space them out(ive selected the writings outline thats why this is a problem) but are there any solutions maybe any settings

  • @I3ICTCH Make your brush type a solid. it may be on a different one

  • when i work with refine edge tool it doesnt refine it just blurs the edges

  • @NothingBlogging Im having troubles too, but I hope ill improve with time :)

  • @NothingBlogging i went to school for 4 years to learn everything a graphic designer needs to know including the Adobe software now i have 6 years experience and still need to take a look at a tutorial to learn something or remind myself how that works so dont hate your self for it just work with the program a lot an it will come have patience !

  • This works fine if you have a good contrast in the picture, but with poor contrast pictures, the extract tool is indespensible.

  • 5 people Cant afford Adobe Photoshop CS5 !

  • could that be a mix of paris hilton and miley cyrus ?

  • I was wondering where extract was, but never mind this is 22x better. Thanks for the help.

  • Verry useful !!!!

  • i find the extract tool sooo much better

  • quick selection sux! mask and go... is so much faster than messin with the quick selction tool

  • quick selection sux!

  • it doesn't seem to work for me. I tried it and

    1. it leaves a white hue over some of the areas that i worked on

    2. it doesn't do it the way you do it. lol

im not sure what im doing wrong.

  • Wow, are you originally American, and migrated to Australia later ?

There's a mix of both accents in that speech.

    Cool tut, thx !

  • Hey I need some help I did that beginning part and now its asking me for a fill it would be so awesome if you could help me

  • Hey man, thanks for video! I am new to cs5 and was about to do the usual way of using the pen tool but came acros this video and done the extraction under 1 min. Also thanks to Adobe!

  • I can't seem to get that selection tool to work for me when trying to cut out people from backgrounds. It seems like every time I see a video about removing people from backgrounds, the people are against a one colored wall....never in a garden or anything like that.

  • My new Keygen CS5 !

    /watch?v=1J4FARnAAYc

  • pen tool image cutting is easier

  • When I "paint over the edges", it takes away and even turns the image darker. What am I doing wrong?

  • @tterrag1441 --> having the same problem =( what can I do about it?

  • @mzswn kk here the fix. when you have extra space, hold down option key, and when you dont have enough, for like when you are doing hair, just do it normally.

  • @tterrag1441 tyyy...

a bit late but I thank you for the reply.

  • for me its harder i prefer extract

  • WOW thats a lot easier than how I do it...

  • well 2hrs have gone pass and i still cant figer out this new extract tool thingy i cant get the all the little bits of background to go. but i do like the way it makes all the little details and hairs come up

  • I want to draw cartoon images and use them on certain programs/or flyers. But i just want the image not the whole background with the image, how would i be able to do that?

  • thanks for a clear and concise guide on using this feature.

  • awsome dude! thanks a lot :D

  • Nice video... too bad it was not done on a MAC....

  • Thanks for that Colin! Gonna go try cut out some clouds now! Say you've got an unusual accent, sounds like a South African living in Texas? Or am I far off? Keep the videos coming bro!

  • @EdgarRodrigue ähhmmm......perhaps he went to a shop and buy it...^^...

  • I need help, my brush in refine edge doesen't really add to the selection it just mucks it up. I do have the right one selected.

  • you said increase the amount to a lower amount.... lol just a heads up :P

  • Wonderful mate. Many thanks for doing this tutorial. I was spending a huge amount of time doing it the old way with the pen tool and this method is doing most of the donkey work. Thanks for saving my sanity cutting out images.

    Cheers

    Jim

  • I actually found a way to get the newest version of Photoshop for free! Just check out the video on mah page!!!

  • Thank you sooo much... Great Teacher... i could never get rid of the white shadow around my images... Thanks for the short cut...... LOVIN Photoshop 5

  • Thank you sooo much... Great Teacher... i could never get rid of the white shadow around my images... Thanks for the short cut......

  • realy helpfull thx

  • Photoshop CS5 makes graphic design sooo easy nowadays, a kid with no degree or training can probably do things pros can do. Scary yet exciting, very cool stuff :)

  • AWESOME

  • Horrible example, i mean a white background.. really??

  • @TarikProductions Actually its a brilliant example. Just because you don't use images shot against a white background doesn't mean others don't. This tutorial explained precisely everything I needed to know. Well done Colin.

  • I HATE CS5!!!

Nothing does what it's meant to any more.

  • @tryptychUK what's your job? because if your job does not concern digital, graphic editing and photography then you have no right to say that

  • I am the director of a media company for over 20 years, and it does involve all those three, so maybe I do know what I'm talking about.

  • The size of my image is always small. I'm trying to make a banner but it keeps getting smaller when I transfer to another tab. Help

  • at 3:14 i've been like WTF?! great tool!

  • very cool new feature^^

  • This is good but I can't drag the photo that I cut out to the other one. Used to be able to see both pictures on the screen and do it that way. Tried dragging to the top tab bar but nothing happens just get the other picture popping up.

  • I have a wedding photo that I'm trying to remove a buddy of mine. However I'm having a little bit of trouble. I've selected people that I want through quick selection, chose refine edge, made some adjustments and chose the output as "new layer with layer mask". After I click on OK, the image selected is NOT cut out? It opens a new layer with layer mask.. but defaulted back to the original picture.. What did I do wrong? I have tried over and over... I'm missing something?

  • This guy has about 6 different accents, haha. Cool.

  • thanks for the help photoshopcafe

  • thanks alot for showing us your skills and the new features in PS5! I really appreciate it.

  • Thx for sharing this tips! =)

  • thanxz nice very nice

  • awesome Ó.ò photoshop will be easier and easier

great work and great tutorial =)

  • Hi, this vid is awesome. Easy to understand. Can you do a tutorial on extracting or edge refining for a black backdrop? I know there are heaps out there as well as myself who have abit of trouble extracting from darker coloured backgrounds. The Quick selection tool in cs5 is oversensitive i think. Unless i was doing it wrong. But yeh, awesome vid but another with a different background will go down nicely. Thanx for the tutorial

  • Well, you know all those forum sig makers are gonna go NUTS about this.

  • thank you!

  • excellent vid man im about to download cs5 i currently have cs4

  • Thanks for the careful explanation and demonstration of the features.

  • Photoshop sucks!

  • @EdgarRodrigue

I've been a beta tester for many years :)

  • cant you just freakin extract normaly? that new tool is retarded!

  • Brilliant! Thanks for showing. 1st class tutorial

  • it works great on normal images but im having a lot of difficulty using it with flyaway hair

  • Great demo! Thanks.

  • @zonexll I'm not trying to insult or impress anyone. This is a real world example for Professional Photographers. This is how I shoot for my real-world work. I'm not working from stock photography.

  • Show us an example how "extremely well" it performs with real life examples Colin, instead of controlled studio environments. I would be the first one to admit my mistake if you can convince us.
