This departure is the core of the season. Loss. What makes it interesting is that Dukie couldn't be anything because society failed him. He couldn't go to school because he would be teased, and he couldn't stand on the corner because he wasn't hard enough. Michael saw potential in Dukie, and unfortunately, Dukie became nonchalant under Michael's wing. When Michael was put in a situation like this one, did he really save Dukie? After all, Bubbles found his way after a while. As did Omar, but he
that scene always depressed when when michael responds to dukie asking him if he remembers the piss balloons "i don't"...this just shows how things have changed forever and michael is no longer the same person nor is he in the same world any more. The fates of both of them isn't going to be a positive one.
This remembrance of Dukie and Mike reminds me of the remembrance of Avon and Stringer in the end of season 3. The two duos share memories before their split. But Avon and Stringer, despite each knows that the other is planning to kill him, remember happily the "good old times". But Dukie, despite being so close with Mike all along the fifth season, understands in that scene they are worlds apart: Mike doesn't remember the memory he shares, because of the shit that happened since.
The sad thing is... Looking at the common four... You see wealth/violence succeeded, (Namond who got smarter through the sake of a better family which Dukie/Randy desperately needed, and Michael who's as ruthless as Omar now.) And then to see sensitivity or gentle and intelligent failed... (Randy who was street smart, and had the ability to make money not illegally, and had dreams/aspirations. Dukie who was intelligent, and had so much... but so little.) Easy to grasp why, but hard to understand
@SunRys1 The Wire smashes so much the spectator hopes. Seeing Dukie walking toward the junkie in this dark alley is so heartbreaking. Maybe that's what makes this show so good.
This fucking sucks, I was just like Duke, but after the 4th grade I started to kick the bully's ass. But everything else identical. This happens in B-More, and D.C. Everyday, and no1 gives a shit! But we have bleeding hearts for kids everywhere else, I hate to play the "race card" but it appears Blacks life ARE NOT AS VALUABLE as others. And no1 will ever intervene to stop this, yet suburban kids wanna live this life so bad it disgusts me
@yusef0335 as a former suburban kid, I was also disgusted at how enamored many other kids at my school were with life "on the other side of the tracks" without knowing what it was really like.
I know Bug was his first priority, but Michael could have at least dropped Dukie off at a hotel and can him some dough instead of taking him to a crack spot.
If everything is a repeated cycle in this show, at least Duke has some chance of a good ending. By the end of the series, Bubbles was able to make a recovery somehow...even if it was for his sister...
That is the single saddest line in the entire series. This scene perfectly captures the brutality and merciless nature of the game; The game took Michaels parents from him, it took his substitute family from him, it took his little brother from him, it took his power from him, it took his sense of place from him and it took his friends from him.
However, in this one line, we see the greatest tragedy: The Game took his memories. Michael can no longer even remember being happy.
Great post, the Greek tragedy that is the Wire is never more apparent then in this scene.
But also the "I don't" line resonates because us, the audience, certainly remembers that water balloon fight, where Namond pissed on himself. That was about 20 episodes ago and the journey these "kids" go on in so harrowing.
@Twisttheawesome Personally I think you are interpreting it wrong. Michael wouldn't forget about that, he got his ass beat after knocking 2 of the kids out/down, and pelting them with piss balloons. And that was only 1 year before at most.
I think he just didn't wanna get too sentimental because it would hurt more, having to see Duke go down that path, and probably feeling a bit guilty for the situation.
@TheAMbEr37 Mike Does Remeber He Is Just Trying To Forget Because He Knows He Is About To Start Leading A Whole New Lifestyle...Think About It...He Left Behind His Own BROTHER!..He Knew He Had To Leave Bugg And Dukie
@TheAMbEr37 he was doing so much and going thru so much shit he blocked out his past. think if ur a hirered murderer u gotta be able to block out alotta thoughts and memories just to cope with your mind. he dont remember because he forced himself not to remember. its all in the game
Michael has killed off the old "Mike", the fun kid from the block that always did the right thing - because he knows he would never be right for the streets.
@CrackEMcGee nah michael is becoming omar....................... think about it .......he only kills other drug dealers robbers ,... he didnt shoot the little kid like omar dosnt kill little kids n shit
Mike remembered the story but by saying he didnt he allow himself not to get wrapped up in his past and get attached to Dukie for Dukie's safety, it was his way of letting go cuz the life he is about to live ahead emotion is gonna get him killed he had to let all that shit go
@poloprince85 I see it a bit differently. I see it as Mike, having sacrificed basically his entire life now to drugs and violence, he can't even remember who he was in the past. For him, everything is centered around killing and trying to live another day.
grrr every1 keeps saying that this show is sooo great and stuff and im dying to watch it bcuz ive never seen it be4 but does anyone know where i can watch season 1?
@wild4music101 go to ovguidedotcom and search The Wire Season 1 and it will list some links to watch it. You might be better off downloading it though
i think this may be the best episode of the wire. its so sad that michael has become so consumed by violence and hate that he cant remember better days. :(
4 me personally this was the toughest scene of the wire- even tougher than wallace's death and randy in the hospital. This showed just how much they had changed. That quiet boy named michael frm season 4 was no more
I think mike remembered but I think he forced himself not to get attached to the memory cuz things had changed so much since those days.........there was no returning to innocence lost.....
This scene always messed me up because Dookie lost so much but always had hope through Mike and for Mike not to remember their shared joys of childhood was just sad and a catalyst to the tragedy of their futures: Mike as the new Omar and Dookie as the new Bubbles.
such a powerfully tragic scene. mike not remembering any of his childhood memories only reaffirms the coldness and change in his character. the innocent young quiet boy that was in the beginning of season 4 is totally gone now, victim of the society and the game.
This isn't the best scene from the series, but it's god damn close. The cold things Michael had to do turned forced him to lose all of the good memories from his childhood, his memories. That alone is cry worthy. Then you have Dukie who @ 2:21 is looking towards his future then turns back only to see that his past is gone forever. I cried so hard.
am i the only one who noticed that at 2:29-2:30 dukie turned around to see if mike was still there. maybe things woulda been dif if mike hadnt driven off...
Also one of the most beautiful things about this show you actually see Michael, Dukie, Namond and asshole Kenard get a lil older in both seasons...lol
Damn, o Know This Want Real, But iT Killed Me How All 4 Of Dem Niggas Mike,Dukie,Randy And Namond All eNDED uP splitting up, And Mike Prolly Having The Most Responsibility, Dukie Got The Most Fucked p Life if he is gon end up like bubbles, Randy Just Need A lil Bit Of Help, Maybe A Good Foster Family And Namond Prolly With The Best Life, They Should Have A 6th Season Where They Reunite, Or At Least Dukie And Mike Cuz that Was Fukked Up How iT Ended
Old organizations fall and a new one is built in a day
Its just a massive cycle. I think that has always been the overarching point of the Wire
And to anybody wondering how Mike's mind has possibly been warped remember back to the time you were 13 and you sold drugs, killed X amount of people, seen X amount of people killed in front of you and had your own Dad Killed..
@YB206 I love how the wire underplayed Michael's slow decent. There was no scene where he directly said 'I am going crazy or anything to the effect' Just a subtle nod to it at the season 4 end montage and in season 5 when he wouldn't shoot the infant walking out of the house. To anyone paying attention him being completely jaded wouldn't be a surprise and thats what the wire asks of its viewers.
When Dukie asks Michael if he remembered the past summer with the Terrace Boys and the baloons, did Michael say "I do" or "I don't?"
If he said "I don't" how could he not remember that especially after Dukie described the incident? Mike may not recall every specific detail, but wouldn't he at least remember the event in general? Had Michael been through so much in the game that he lost virtually all recollection of his childhood memories that occurred only a year or so ago?

i hear what you're saying but honestly it's not that hard 4 me 2 believe that's no longer part of Mike's memory.
i think the fact he doesn't recall something Dukie so vividly describes was the writers way of speaking to the severity of this lifestyle.
Michael is a teen but with grown man responsibilities, making life & death decisions daily.
he probably does have childhood memories but this "memory" is dwarfed by 2 many realities he dealing with N the here & now.
