Same as they had "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" playing near the end on the original 'This is England' Film despite the film being set a year before that song was released. With that said, people didn't stop listening to the smiths in 88.

This is England doesn't set to use songs during the year it's set in, just songs that influenced the culture/fashion being shown..

I think he should have sung it with more grit and energy instead of sounding like he can't be bothered and has a hangover. The last minute or so of the song sound better without the singing to be honest. But of course that is just my opinion.
