@vashna3799 Nope your using modern music definitions where everything that has a guitar in it is classed as rock , im an 80,s child this was most definately not rock back then.
@ainsleywalker It wasn't actually in a scene being played, it was just a soundtrack to it. Same as they had "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" playing near the end on the original 'This is England' Film despite the film being set a year before that song was released. With that said, people didn't stop listening to the smiths in 88.
This is England doesn't set to use songs during the year it's set in, just songs that influenced the culture/fashion being shown..
@ainsleywalker calm down mate it was an innocent comment, maybe you should direct you're questions to the people who made the program? And likewise, the Smiths are one of my favorite british bands, especially of this era. Goodbye Mr Keyboard Warrior
@JuanKinoff I'm glad! Just to clarify, i did like and know of the smiths long before this is england, as some people seem to have quite an issue with the fact people were reminded of this song by the tv show haha
@ANeedForRoots hmmn. well i don't think that you read very carefully what I had to say about this song. All I said was what I think the song is about which makes alot of sense if you read what I said. I said that he's talking about telling someone he's gay then being rejected but still being fond of that said person and if you liked him before what difference should his sexuality make? if that's not what he's talking about in this song idk wtf it's about.
johnny marr's work on this song is astounding, I'm not a huge smiths fan but I get so pissed off that he doesn't get the credit that he deserves from the music press. the guitar mag journalists both in uk and us are still obsessing over middle age middle class white men playing corny blues rock, or 80's hair metal. this guy is the best and most original guitarist still alive and deserves far more credit than he gets.
I know this song is about someone who's considered more than a friend ... but it really applies to my situation with a platonic figure, who's treated me like dirt, but yet I'd still do anything for her. The Smiths never get old...
@andthewinnerisJ Morrissey is the best lyricist ever to be born, and Johnny Marr one of the greatest guitarists. I love Oasis but there is no denying the fact the essentially copied The Beatles. There is nothing particularly special or complicated about Noel's guitar playing or the music he writes, his lyrics can be genius but when comparing them to The Smiths, possibly the most talented band in history, they don't look that great. I'd love to hear what Noel has to say about what you think.
Mr. Stamp is also mentioned in Ray Davies' 'Waterloo Sunset' in the line "Terry meets Julie", referring to Julie Christie - the story is that they were both appearing onstage in different shows and were an item at that time.
@Southerntredkill The guy on the cover is actually actor Terence Stamp. It was a publicity shot for the film The Collector, in 1965. I'm a smartarse, I know :)
@scrumtralescence Hmm? That was someone different the 1st time, but yeah it just seemed like you didn't believe it. It's really interesting to note that Stamp intially denied the use of the photo, and Morrissey actually re-enacted the shot, until Stamp eventually allowed it, making covers with the Morrissey photo some rare collectibles :)
this song in my opinion is yet another gay confession by morrissey. all men have secrets. i think its about him telling a friend that hes gay and being rejected by that friend, but hes still fond of that friend, so what difference should it make if he's gay or straight. now they know the truth about him they wont see him anymore. and hes not gonna give anymore apologies.
@medicatedguitarist it's always been rumoured this was written about his relationship with johnny Marr. Because every good Smiths fan knows that the sexual tension between them was what made the music so damn intense. See also - There Is A Light.
Regardless of what it's about, if this record was a sentient being, I'd sex it right up.
@patience0791 For a start the guitar need to be higher up in the mix, it is a great riff and Morrisey seems to smother it with his typical style. I think he should have sung it with more grit and energy instead of sounding like he can't be bothered and has a hangover. The last minute or so of the song sound better without the singing to be honest. But of course that is just my opinion.
@KazakageoftheSand Don't try getting on my good side, you are not having a pair of my soiled underpants to wave around in front of your hairy nostrils.
@KazakageoftheSand It's okay, the truth hurts when it's presented in a direct fashion to the guilty. I understand that you are angry and dissapointed with the outcome of your pointless and miserable life, but look on the bright side, there will always be soiled underwear for you to sniff. Now, run along you insignificant little turd.
@KazakageoftheSand Imagine if anyone ever took any notice of you? Now, back to reality, nobody does, even those kids who mock and point at you as you limp past thinking perverted thoughts about their genitals you fat nonce. I am sure that there is a website similar to ebay that specialises in used underwear that caters for the filthy people like you in society. If there isn't one then maybe that's something you could set up. I worked in 4 recording studios, how many have you worked in?
@owenhunt That would be difficult without thumbs, but I will help you if you promise to let me wear one of your dresses that you "had an accident in".
@owenhunt I did like your comment so I made an exception and viewed your profile. I can now state without doubt that you couldn't fight your way out of a paper bag which has been made out of the lightest paper known to man.
I saw morrissey in concert a few years back & he ripped his shirt off & threw it into the crowd who went wild for it then he said "go right ahead & tear it apart". I bought it at target today for $13.00.......
@Runrome from the back of the single: "Cover Star: Terrence Stamp (courtesy Columbia Pictures)". Sorry I can't remember what movie the still is from, but I'm sure Google knows...
@mavericknoone The album cover is Terence Stamp in the 1965 film 'The Collector'. Stamp objected to his photograph being used and Morrissey had to recreate the shot for further pressings.
@mconeillster It's Terence Stamp from the film 'The Collector'. He withdrew his approval to use his image for the single's cover, so it was reshot with Morrissey in the same pose.
@foxbasealpha - That's kinda lame he withdrew the approval. The Smiths are a legend. If I were him I would be proud they chose my image! (I have a Smiths t-shirt with this image so I am curious when he decided to withdraw?)
"The single cover is a photograph taken on the set of the film The Collector based on the novel by John Fowles. Originally Terence Stamp denied permission for the still to be used, and some pressings featured lead singer Morrissey in a re-enacted scene. In the re-enactment Morrissey is holding a glass of milk, as opposed to a chloroform pad in the original. Eventually, however, Stamp changed his mind, and the covers featuring Morrissey are now very rare and collectible."
There's an alternative cover of Morrissey holding a glass of milk as Terence Stamp at first refused permission for his image to be used. If you ever come across a Morrissey cover,snap it up....
The still is a publicity shot from the Stamp film called 'The Collector' and it was thanks to Sandie Shaw that Terence Stamp finally gave his approval for his image to be shown...

@foxbasealpha - That's kinda lame he withdrew the approval. The Smiths are a legend. If I were him I would be proud they chose my image! (I have a Smiths t-shirt with this image so I am curious when he decided to withdraw?)

@jenovella70

@SireMario444
There's an alternative cover of Morrissey holding a glass of milk as Terence Stamp at first refused permission for his image to be used. If you ever come across a Morrissey cover,snap it up....

00twanga00 11 months ago
@00twanga00
The still is a publicity shot from the Stamp film called 'The Collector' and it was thanks to Sandie Shaw that Terence Stamp finally gave his approval for his image to be shown...
