I think that the self drive mode will no doubt make it into all cars eventually and it will be sold partly as a safety feature! all the people who have fallen asleep at the wheel for example! I cannot imagine it completely replacing the driver (not for a long time anyway)
Yeah they've been able to make cars with autopilots for some time now, the problem is the ethics no one dares leaving a computer in control of the car, because if an accident occurs and someone dies who's to blame?.
Plus what if some psychotic hacker one day want's to play deathrace with real cars.
@navyaks2 The new Ford Focus has some automation functions! it can parallel park itself and can perform an emergency stop! I think if there was a self drive mode the "driver" would still be expected to seize control of the car at a moments notice if necessary that is a disturbing though! some hacker using malware to hijack a car! I remember they were talking about an automated driving system in the 90s that involved imbedding sensors in the tarmac, the rollout was going to be very expensive!

By research and data driven models it can be shown that automated cars are safer they will be introduce.
when test cities show a marked increase in safety the uptake will be quick.
These types of systems could be integrated to fixed rail systems.
Augmented modular cars are the future. These are cars that can be integrated into other transport systems and the bodies of the cars can be changed in minutes. So a car service will have a new meaning.
Google knows who is good and who is bad from your searches, and now it has access to a machine capable of killing without being held responsible. Does anyone else see a problem here?
Seriously people. Do you all not realise the difference between a driver and a passenger? If the guy is not touching the wheel or the brakes or the accelerator then in what reasonable sense is he to be called a driver?
What's driver-less about that? there is a guy in the drivers seat and unless the car is also self concious about being filmed I would say that the driver stepped on the break.
This reminds me of the film 'Minority Report' (set in 2050) where the US Government was able to take control of John Anderton's car and put it into lockdown. In the future Google may have that power and lend their services to the authorities.

@navylaks2 This is not a a difficult ethics question... The person who allowed his computer to drive the care would be responsible.

@silverrapth why would google be in control of your car? It would be no different than any on board computer system.

I will not be surprise if Google one day becomes our president.
