THIS was the Last Show, not the wonderful retrospective that happened the next night.
I hadn't seen this since the night it was aired, 20 years ago this coming May, and it is exactly as I remembered it, indelibly etched on my film of memory.
(Kudos to Ross Tompkins, the pianist, who found their key, and improvised a flawless accompaniment to go along with them.)
Turns from just a charming interview to a magical moment when Miss M. begins a a'cappella "Rainy Day" and Mr C. nonchalantly joins in, followed very quietly by the piano. And suddenly, the audience is hushed, the camera zooms in, and there isn't a dry eye in the house. And on only a 90-second clip. Singularly gorgeous.
I haven't seen this since it aired in '92. Definitely a moving moment that brought chills all over again. There will never ever be another like Johnny.
You watch all seven first parts. You now get to the final. Now that COCKSUCKER Edgar Bronfman of WMG decides there's something in the FINAL part of the FINAL Johnny Carson show ever that is HIS - AND HE DOESN'T WANT YOU LISTEN TO IT. Fuck Edgar Bronfman. Fuck him. Write to him and tell him to ESAD. That fucking shit.
OK this duet was almost uncalled for. It's so nostalgic, so sentimental, as others say: it makes you cry. I don't want to cry over Johnny - he always made people so happy. I think that's what he wanted to leave people. Cheers.
@sunshineuk1965 You haven'tt found it elsewhere, no-one else uploaded it? I really thought I saw it, but later couldn't find it, like many. I'm so curious for it, this episode was a gem. Let me and others know if you do find it again!
Neither Jay, Dave, or Conan could ever have a moment like this on television. They just don't have the warmth and respect from the people like Johnny did.
This is without a doubt one of the best if not the best live clips in the history of all Television. Doesn't get anymore real than this... sniff sniff
Effing Robin Williams can't keep his coked-up mouth shut. But even he couldn't ruin the moment between Johnny and Bette. You'd think Robin would have put down the spoon at least for this moment.
Growing up with Johnny all my life and LUCKY enough to have gone to at least 10 of his tapings of The Tonight Show in the 70's..I really loved this man..He always made you feel comfortable and was able to make you forget your troubles of your day and simply have fun and laugh..I miss him terribly..AND to Bette I say, THANK YOU THANK YOU for the best send off EVER...It doesnt get any better than this...
I was in the audience that night and I will never forget the absolutely palpable electricity in the studio. Even Robin Williams knew he was in the presence of greatness [not his own!] and took a seat in the back of the bus. This is easily one of the highlights of television history. The Divine One never forgot who took her to the prom.
Ya know, this is probably the greatest moment of Carson history. Johnny was great, as always, but this performance with Bette will always stand out in my mind!God love his heart!

Someone able to make out what they were chatting from 1,23 - 1,46?
The crowd is so touched it's hard to tell. What I got so far is:
Robin must have said something unrecorded
Bette to Robin: Are you sure baby?
Robin: Yes. Thanks for come Nikita. I'm happy to be here.
(-----I know it should be "coming", for the one who'll take the minutes---)
Johnny: Wow! I have to tell you that. Wow.
Bette: I should have take my harmonies.
Anyone else dreaming they've said something like that?

Bette probably has copyrights to it, since it is on one of her albums. I imagine that's why 'One for my baby . . .' isn't here
