  • THIS was the Last Show, not the wonderful retrospective that happened the next night.

I hadn't seen this since the night it was aired, 20 years ago this coming May, and it is exactly as I remembered it, indelibly etched on my film of memory.

(Kudos to Ross Tompkins, the pianist, who found their key, and improvised a flawless accompaniment to go along with them.)

  • I can't believe its been 20 years already...

  • Turns from just a charming interview to a magical moment when Miss M. begins a a'cappella "Rainy Day" and Mr C. nonchalantly joins in, followed very quietly by the piano. And suddenly, the audience is hushed, the camera zooms in, and there isn't a dry eye in the house. And on only a 90-second clip. Singularly gorgeous.

  • holy moly, that be a cryer!! me dad would play this on piano and me mum would sing whilist growing up...

  • I haven't seen this since it aired in '92. Definitely a moving moment that brought chills all over again. There will never ever be another like Johnny.

  • This was one of my mom's favorite things in the world to watch over and over. I wish she was here to watch it again.

  • But that's how the show was. Gags always slipped shifted on three levels contemporary if you know what I mean

  • Someone able to make out what they were chatting from 1,23 - 1,46?

The crowd is so touched it's hard to tell. What I got so far is:

Robin must have said something unrecorded

Bette to Robin: Are you sure baby?

Robin: Yes. Thanks for come Nikita. I'm happy to be here.

(-----I know it should be "coming", for the one who'll take the minutes---)

Johnny: Wow! I have to tell you that. Wow.

Bette: I should have take my harmonies.

Anyone else dreaming they've said something like that?

  • love love love love love this!

  • THANK YOU JOHNNY. YOU WERE IN A CLASS BY YOURSELF. YOUR MISSED.

  • THANK YOU JOHNNY. YOU WERE IN A CLASS BY YOURSELF. YOUR MISSED

  • This makes me cry. We miss you Johnny. Bette you are a class act.

  • where is part 8?

  • Thank you soooo much !!!!

  • You watch all seven first parts. You now get to the final. Now that COCKSUCKER Edgar Bronfman of WMG decides there's something in the FINAL part of the FINAL Johnny Carson show ever that is HIS - AND HE DOESN'T WANT YOU LISTEN TO IT. Fuck Edgar Bronfman. Fuck him. Write to him and tell him to ESAD. That fucking shit.

  • OK this duet was almost uncalled for. It's so nostalgic, so sentimental, as others say: it makes you cry. I don't want to cry over Johnny - he always made people so happy. I think that's what he wanted to leave people. Cheers.

  • Utterly speechless...Never seen this before.Great TV...Johnny Carson sure was a class act.

  • But what happened to part 8? Dosent Bette Midler sing "one for My Baby and One More for The Road?

  • I'm also looking for part ((8)) ????? where might it be.. I gre up watching this master.. I miss ol school comedians

  • @highlandbreez

I had it bookmarked but it got removed - . 8 is really moving

Carson wipes away a tear and Midler gives her heart and sole.

    damned youtube

i'd sit through the new advertising if they'd stop taking stuff down

  • @sunshineuk1965 You haven'tt found it elsewhere, no-one else uploaded it? I really thought I saw it, but later couldn't find it, like many. I'm so curious for it, this episode was a gem. Let me and others know if you do find it again!

  • Where is part 8?

  • Bette and Johnny are so cute singing together!

  • Neither Jay, Dave, or Conan could ever have a moment like this on television. They just don't have the warmth and respect from the people like Johnny did.

  • most amazing and emotional moment in television

  • speechless. Just incredible. - tanyafitness. com

  • This is without a doubt one of the best if not the best live clips in the history of all Television. Doesn't get anymore real than this... sniff sniff

  • Effing Robin Williams can't keep his coked-up mouth shut. But even he couldn't ruin the moment between Johnny and Bette. You'd think Robin would have put down the spoon at least for this moment.

  • Oh...Pahleeeeeeeeeeeez!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So wonderful.

  • I always get a little verklempt when I watch this. Those two kids really loved each other so much. How could Martin not be jealous!!

  • why is that so beautiful...it brings me to tears everytime...

  • That last part when they sang earned Bette Midler an Emmy..

  • Haven't seen this in years.....always makes me cry. Johnny was simply the best.

  • @pufive Totally agree, also, it was great how Robin Williams knew to shut the hell up during this song. He knew he was out classed.

  • This is the best part of all the 8 parts...quite touching Rest in Peace, Johnny.

  • Growing up with Johnny all my life and LUCKY enough to have gone to at least 10 of his tapings of The Tonight Show in the 70's..I really loved this man..He always made you feel comfortable and was able to make you forget your troubles of your day and simply have fun and laugh..I miss him terribly..AND to Bette I say, THANK YOU THANK YOU for the best send off EVER...It doesnt get any better than this...

  • Reduced me to tears. That was so beautiful.

  • Where is 8 of 8?

  • NBC deleted it because of copyright

  • @clof2001 Why just that one and not the others? Her "One for my baby" was one of the greatest moments on TV ... ever!

I'm really (as she said) "Fuhtootz" about it.

  • Made me tear up.

  • me too...she is the greatest ever

  • unforgettable

  • 'One For My Baby' is on 'the Divine Bette Midler' doc. dvd

  • The missing part where Bette Midler sings One For My Baby.

Google video search: Bette Midler One For My Baby.

The longest one is "By: Erin"

  • Thanks! I wondered why they took this off.

  • Look at the sad face on Robin, cuz he cant "jump" in ANYWHERE on this song...

  • That video used to be here - I loved watching it. You may be right, gbpakgirl26 - it's probably in Bette's vault.

  • Bette probably has copyrights to it, since it is on one of her albums. I imagine that's why 'One for my baby . . .' isn't here

  • where's "one for my baby"??????

  • did you find it. Im looking myself

  • search it on google, youtube does not carry it...at least i can't find it. but yahoo video or something does

  • Thanks .Bette really sang that to Johnny personaly ,and she ment it..

  • I was in the audience that night and I will never forget the absolutely palpable electricity in the studio. Even Robin Williams knew he was in the presence of greatness [not his own!] and took a seat in the back of the bus. This is easily one of the highlights of television history. The Divine One never forgot who took her to the prom.

  • The piano ending during the impromptu "Here Comes That Rainy Day" is absolutely fantastic.

  • Yeap, that band possessed quite a bit of talent

  • +that little song so sweet i tear up everytime i see it, boy do i miss johnny!

  • Johnny was the best talk show host ever!!!!!!

  • Ya know, this is probably the greatest moment of Carson history. Johnny was great, as always, but this performance with Bette will always stand out in my mind!God love his heart!

  • I remember this like it just happened. A truly great moment in TV.

  • Brings tears to my eyes each time I watch this. Wow...time sure flies. I miss Johnny. And Bette is a treasure.

  • Thank goodness Robin Williams managed to keep his mouth shut (for most of it anyway)

  • I'm a Williams fan, and I agree with you.

He has his place, but he was stepping all over Bette throughout. Fortunately he was detained at this point.

  • Hardly true, he said something like what two times during her 6 minute interview.

  • Sorry,, It's Nydon57,,Not Raydon57

Dislexsic,,had a few to many ,,what ever..

  • Wow,,,Johnny looking at Bett,,Singing...

    Classic,,

    As Raydon57 said.."One of tv's finest moments"

  • Beautiful!

  • Johnny's last week was so special! Anne

  • Truly, one of TV's finest moments
