learning to focus on the erg is essential to being able to focus for long pieces on the water. Though it may seem like listening to music helps to keep you occupied and not focused on the pain and repetitiveness, in the long run not listening to music will train you to be be able to discipline and focus yourself anywhere anytime. Plus if you need something to think about on the erg, you should be concentrated on technique, rhythm and posture
so, mr. muller, if i'm able to do that stabilizer on the erg with one leg and contract it, does that mean i have olympic potential as well? ;)
i'd love to get to this level of rowing, racing as a sculler has been something i've never tried, only sweeps (typical americans eh?) but i still have a few years in college to get my times down and increase experience
I put together a DVD of on the water sculling. I was filmed two weeks ago. In that same DVD I added an indoor rowing technique session, in which I explain power application.
The sport of rowing needs to be marketed better. A lot of very capable athletes bow out of the sport before their prime, because of financial reasons, which are usually linked to starting a family.
My goal is not to become a collegiate coach (at least not for now), I am motivated to introduce rowing to people who never had the idea that rowing could improve their quality of life.
I am currently on a DIET with Nutrisystem, it is working. I lost almost 20 pounds in three weeks.
I really enjoy practicing to the sport of rowing and making a business out of it. Until I started the indoor rowing gym I did not believe that I was going stay with rowing as a career. I realized that there are not many Olympic medalist who chose rowing as their lifelong commitment, so I happen to be one of few. With the creation of my indoor rowing gym as a business model, this will likely change and I am very excited about it. All the best to you all.
kinda cool to be speaking to a Gold Medallist, not to give ya a big head or anything...
How did you and Waddell match up on the Erg in 96? If you don't mind me asking? Were you far off him over 2k on the erg? I found the 2000 Olympic race so interesting as it contained some of the most interesting personalities of the 90's in rowing. Yourself, Waddell and Porter also, who I believe is also fairly strong on the erg.
to be fair, Rob is amazing, but if I were Mahe, I'd be expecting to be beaten this last weekend. Drysdale was beaten in one or two of the World Cup Regattas last year, but stepped up when it counts, at the Worlds. Thats not to say that the World Cups arent important, but he placed obvious preference on the Worlds. Drysdale knew well that Waddell is out to make the team, but he's a cool character. I expect March will be the race of the year.
He broke 15 minutes for 5K, he can push below 5:40 for 2k. Some one who is good for 2K will be good for 5K. 5K is just not such a popular distance among national team athletes.
Rob just won the first national team regatta in the single scull with an impressive time, beating the current world champion.
I'm so happy to see him back! I watched Rob's last race and felt crappy for him. I also have a heart condition, and can tell you that sculling becomes impossible when beats are irregular. I watched Mahe's coach, and quickly realized he has little clue what actually happened in that race. I once raced the single at Henley with the same problem and thought I was going to die! I feel Rob would thrash the man if he had this problem solved, and had been training longer.
Rob is great. Going AFIB with your heart is quite an event when it happens to you for the first time. I had it 5 times between 1996 and 2007. What happened to Rob with his heart is another proof that EVERYTHING needs to be right on in order to get all the way to the top spot at the Olympics. Thank to the internet more athletes can get in formation on AFIB heart conditions. I hope you have a great weekend.
I heard Rob is back out in the single again and keen on racing at the world stage. I also heard he unoffically broke the 2k ergo world record with a really fast time too. Any of this true?
Rob was just killing time squatting that day. I am not sure what his routine is. I am sure if he had not been able to row he would have spent 90 minutes doing squats. He is so sickly driven, it was beautiful, and made happy that I turned that page. I might resurrect myself to beat up on some masters in the future HA!
No,the man is the Messiah of Rowing. Redgrave may have dominated this sport, but Rob turned it on it's head. It's sad that people don't actually know just what this man has achieved.
it's not so much what he achieved, it's how he achieved it. He won Olympic gold in 2000, setting a new world record in the process. Also set a 2k WR on the erg (5.38). All within a year.
It was his commitment and drive that set him apart. He raised the bar on what could be achieved. afaik, only 3 people have ever gone under 5.40 for 2k on the erg. Before Rob, it was thought undo-able.
yea; in 2000 he set the 2k erg record by winning CRASH-B, the biggest indoor event. he won the olympic M1x. and then he won the head of the charles M1x, the most prestigious head race. quite an amazing year.
Haha! Rob Waddell went to my High school- never meet him, but he also trained at my current rowing club :)

Why do non-junior rowers never have music?

ya. I love erging to music. Killing in the Name by Rage against the Machine is my 2k song.

yeh i got told that his latest 2k was 5 29 or around that and he keeped on going and got the 5k record
maccona7 4 years ago
that's obviously false...breaking a world record 2k means you are dead after 2k. no one could just continue on to break 5k as well.

I know Rob did a 5:38 for 2km at Crash B's one year, has he been able to break it ever since then?

(2) The question is, is the NZ March Trials too early for Mahe to peak up and still be at his explosive best for the olympics?...
It'd be interesting to see a 4- with Waddell and Bridgewater in it...

Hello Sircian
It is all true what you are writing.
The amazing part of this early race is the speed at which they managed to row down 2K.
