i go to the gym every second day and i do running 10-15 mins cycling 5-10 mins and rowing 10-15 mins i was wondering if rowing is a good cardio exercise cause if its not ill put my time rowing into the bike or the treadmill..

Sprinting is cardio, cardio stands for cardiovascular which is to do with the heart, so if your heart rate goes up because of sprinting, it is cardio.

I know that in 2 weeks or so I would like to increase the time I spend on the swimming pool ( from 45 mins to about 70mins ) and then to about 90 minutes in about 2 months. The question is will it still be good for burning fat or would that be too long? I heard that if you do too much tiring exercise per day your body goes into some kind of alert state and tries to store more energy (in fat) - myth? Maybe it would be better to do 45 mins in the morning and 45 mins in the afternoon?
I hopy you can answer that Scooby (that is if you have the time). You point out that CV should be done for 30 - 60 mins. Is it ok to do longer? Let me explain. I do swimming for cardio everyday ( started 3 weeks ago ). I was always a good swimmer and I enjoy it. I do 50 meters (25m swimming pool) in approx 50 seconds, so everyday I swim about 2 to 2,5 km (1.25 - 1.55 miles). My heartrate is in the target zone when I do that ( I'm 25 ).
What I would do lift weights and afterwards do cardio. If you're tired from lifting weights there's not much that you can injure doing the cardio, but if you are tired of doing cardio there's more chance to use bad form while lifting weights. For example, if you just ran for 20 minutes and you're exhausted there's more chance to use bad form doing squats because squats are very heavy and exhausting

This isnt suitable for what you are trying to acheive. the cardio work out you suggested is really a very flawed fertlek session but this shouldnt be under taken straight away when training. You should just use continuous training, ie completing an exercise for over 20min. do this at 60-70% of your maximum heart rate (220 minus age) for optmum weight loss resuts, 70 -80% for improving cardioresporatory system. take it slow to begin with then build up over time.

depends wat u mean way u say box, if u are doin 30 mins of high activity boxing raising ur heart rate consistantly then theres ur fat burning session. Doing a good mixture of ab workouts for like 15-20mins aswell as eating healthy and im sure u'll see differences
Better for you stamina doing what? If your goal is to run a marathon, then jogging improves your stamina the best. If your goal is to be boxer where you are jumping for an hour straight, then jump rope. Both are great cardio.

Cardio is a workout. I'm guessing you are talking about before a weightlifting workout? You can do your cardio before or after a workout, but not 10 minutes split. It has to elevate your heart rate for 20 minutes consistently. That means it is done at once - together. Not 10 and 10 minutes split. 20 minutes at once!!!
Any way you do cardio is much better than doing none! If you work at a job where theonly time you can do cardio is during your 15 minute morning and afternoon breaks, its 1000% better to do two 15 minute cardio sessions than none at all. Do it whenever you can!

Injuries suck but life is full of them and as a bodybuilder you have to deal with them. Sometimes the toughest workout is the skipped workout for those like yourself with incredible dedication, but you need to have the discipline to know when its time to slow down/stop and let an injury heal. Pushing thru an injury hurts your progress long term, not helps it.

What do you all think about fat burners like Hydroxycut? I've heard good things and bad. I don't want a quick fix or anything but more so something to enhance the fat burning I am trying to accomplish so I can achieve it quicker.
wind and elevation affect your overall performance, but believe me it is better that way, if you can run outdoors DO IT. If you prefer the treadmill as I (obligatorily forced to) do then try adjusting your treadmill's elevation to at least 3 or 4, that way it wont be so easy and you will burn more fat, especially if you do HIIT.
One other question...for now:) If I miss my 5th meal out of 6, is it ok to eat the amount of protein for both 5th and 6th meal during my last meal? Or do I just miss it and forge ahead?

I know my optimal heart rate is between 90-153...what happens when I go over 153? I checked my pulse today during cardio on the eliptical and to keep if down, it seemed much easier. Is that ok? hey scooby, I perform HIIT cardio 3 times a week after lifting, should I do cardio on my off days ? ( normal jogging 20-30 min cardio, not HIIT since that would kill me) or should I rest as almost everyone does?
can i know how does High intensity interval training works ? . and interval training too . i need to lose some fats =) so after i lose all mine fats i would stick back to cardio .
interval training is the worst invention, you dont need to know anything about it. High intensity interval training is another thing, it is basically a sprint and rest workout that targets your heart rate and improves your endurance much more than those who jog (ask any soccer or football player). It should be done as many times a week you can resist, 2 is more recommendable for beginners but 3 is what we are looking for. 6-7 times a week if you want to be a top class athlete ( read next cmmnt)
but that is extremely hard. To perform HIIT you should try one (maybe both) of the next workouts:
If you are sprinting outdoors ( most suitable option) : Stretch well enough to lower muscle injuries, jog 5 minutes (or 1 1/2,2 laps at the track, or soccer field, city block?)at a comfortable pace and as soon as you do this sprint as fast as you can for 15 to 30 seconds or when your heart is going to explode, rest a minute or half a lap ( jogging NEVER WALK) and repeat. (next comment)
Try to do at least 4 sets as most people do, as time passes and your lungs (endurance) get bigger, healthier and stronger you will need to do more sets, remember the less you weight the less you burn calories so you'll need to push yourself, increase 1 set every one or two weeks till you reach a maximum of 10 (as I do outdoors) or 15 as pro soccer players. If you can do more than that while barely starting is because you are not sprinting but running, PUSH YOURSELF ON THIS ONE.(next /last comnt)
Workout number 2 ( the one I do due to the fact I have a treadmill at home, I used to go outdoor sprinting, it is better). Consists on the same basics of number 1 but using a treadmill.
5 min jog ---4-5 mph
30 s to 1 min semi sprint ( because 10-12 mph isnt my sprint speed but it is good enough)---- 10-12 mph
30 s (advanced) or 1 minute (intermediate) or 1 1/2 (beginner) jog (recover) -- 3-5 mph

hey scooby, I recently started doing cardio at my school's gym on treadmills. For my age, 20, My HR should be at 160 for 20 mins right? I set the speed to 4mph, but this raises my HR to around 170. If I set it lower, it doesnt feel like jogging anymore. What should I do?

By the time I get to 3 my forearms are dying and my hands are extremely tired but by biceps and triceps can keep going. How can I solve this problem? The most important of SEEING abs is nutrition, extremely low body fat, and long time workouts and abs exercise. You can still have steel abs but can't be visible because it's covered by fat. Two different things, keep in mind.

Generaly how you work out a safe max heart rate is to take your age from 220.
Eg. 220-13(your age)=207 <-- this is your max safe heart rate unless your overweight or have a heart condition.

healthy amount of weight to loose is only around 1 to 2kgs a week so about 4lbs max. you need to incorporate resistance training as well to burn fat.

Sometimes the toughest workout is the skipped workout for those like yourself with incredible dedication, but you need to have the discipline to know when its time to slow down/stop and let an injury heal. Pushing thru an injury hurts your progress long term, not helps it.

great advice, im a really big fan of this guy, i still use the 'Killer chest' and 'killer arm' routines, im a bit curious though, if interval cardio for 15 mins isnt good, is doing partial interval training for 60 mins a good idea?

IMHO, there is not such thing as a good, safe supplement. I dont recommend ANY of them, it would be a very, very short video. :)

How should one time cardio throughout the day? Should I do it three hours after eating? The same with strength training. I'm a school teacher and stay incredibly busy. And, I hate running. I've been trying different things to get me interested in cardio. Boy, is it ever hard. Thanks for your input.

chilledkirby is right, thats how we used to measure heart rate at unioersity of texas when I took swimming. Put your fingers on the side of your throat for 6 seconds and add a 0, thats all. Scooby, Awesome video!!!!!

Just to let you know, instead of the 15 seconds times 4, you can do 6 seconds and then add a "0" to the end of the number of beats. (multiply by 10)

What do you all think about fat burners like Hydroxycut? I've heard good things and bad. I don't want a quick fix or anything but more so something to enhance the fat burning I am trying to accomplish so I can achieve it quicker.

wind and elevation affect your overall performance, but believe me it is better that way, if you can run outdoors DO IT. If you prefer the treadmill as I (obligatorily forced to) do then try adjusting your treadmill's elevation to at least 3 or 4, that way it wont be so easy and you will burn more fat, especially if you do HIIT.

Hi Scooby, I have really enjoyed learning from your videos. Great job! I have a question concerning heart rate when doing cardio. I know my optimal heart rate is between 90-153...what happens when I go over 153? I checked my pulse today during cardio on the eliptical and to keep if down, it seemed much easier. Is that ok? I am generally doing cardio for 45 min. everyday. Trying to look and feel my best at 40 come November. Thanks!

interval training is the worst invention, you dont need to know anything about it. High intensity interval training is another thing, it is basically a sprint and rest workout that targets your heart rate and improves your endurance much more than those who jog (ask any soccer or football player). It should be done as many times a week you can resist, 2 is more recommendable for beginners but 3 is what we are looking for. 6-7 times a week if you want to be a top class athlete ( read next cmmnt)

but that is extremely hard. To perform HIIT you should try one (maybe both) of the next workouts:
If you are sprinting outdoors ( most suitable option) : Stretch well enough to lower muscle injuries, jog 5 minutes (or 1 1/2,2 laps at the track, or soccer field, city block?)at a comfortable pace and as soon as you do this sprint as fast as you can for 15 to 30 seconds or when your heart is going to explode, rest a minute or half a lap ( jogging NEVER WALK) and repeat. Try to do at least 4 sets as most people do, as time passes and your lungs (endurance) get bigger, healthier and stronger you will need to do more sets, remember the less you weight the less you burn calories so you'll need to push yourself, increase 1 set every one or two weeks till you reach a maximum of 10 (as I do outdoors) or 15 as pro soccer players. If you can do more than that while barely starting is because you are not sprinting but running, PUSH YOURSELF ON THIS ONE.(next /last comnt)

Workout number 2 ( the one I do due to the fact I have a treadmill at home, I used to go outdoor sprinting, it is better). Consists on the same basics of number 1 but using a treadmill.
5 min jog ---4-5 mph
30 s to 1 min semi sprint ( because 10-12 mph isnt my sprint speed but it is good enough)---- 10-12 mph
30 s (advanced) or 1 minute (intermediate) or 1 1/2 (beginner) jog (recover) -- 3-5 mph
repeat 4 - 15 times. And 5 min cool down.
perform every other day 3 times a week, welcome!

hey scooby, I recently started doing cardio at my school's gym on treadmills. For my age, 20, My HR should be at 160 for 20 mins right? I set the speed to 4mph, but this raises my HR to around 170. If I set it lower, it doesnt feel like jogging anymore. What should I do?

Hey Scooby, for you "Killer Home Arm Workout (biceps, triceps)" you say to do the rotation 5 times. By the time I get to 3 my forearms are dying and my hands are extremely tired but by biceps and triceps can keep going. How can I solve this problem? I don't get the workout I want because my hands are dead. Any suggestions?

I've had the flu for the passed 4-5 days and haven't been eating much at all and can't even get myself up to workout. Before I got the flu i had a great workout schedule and a nice healthy eating plan according to your protein and meal plan. How do I fix this when i overcome this sickness and how will it effect me? The most important of SEEING abs is nutrition, extremely low body fat, and long time workouts and abs exercise. You can still have steel abs but can't be visible because it's covered by fat. Two different things, keep in mind.
