This is a brilliant song and the blend of U2 and Johnny Cash could not have been put down any better. Well done all. Incidentally recorded around the same time as U2 and Dylan doing Dylan's Series of Dreams if my information is correct......and that is a brilliant union as well.
The one thing in my life that brought joy and happyness was the GREAT COUNTRY SINGER JOHNNY CASH I have a hand drawing of him that was signed by him in Bournemouth England which hangs with pride on my bedroom wall, there will never be such a great singer god rest Johnny Cash and Boxcar Willie
@korkeycat With respect, it was written by all of U2, not just the singer. There was no need for you to be rude. I just said I wasn't sure the backing suited him. I didn't criticise U2.
So glad I could met him as he was alive...great guy...I bought myself a disc of U2, its called Zooropa, AND AS A HEARD THAT SONG, I knew it will hard to beat...but we beat it...just hear it...thx for the upload
I remember when my ex fiance broke up with me , that night this song played and after listening to this song I got this feeling that it was for the best and that all would be ok. Then I put my head set on and went walking all over town. It was very healing for me. Thanks Johny you were there for me because I was 3 years sober at the time. A lot of your songs and meetings helped me so much. Now I have six years!! I did not take a drink but I went wandering and found Jesus!! :)
This song is special to me. The person who told me that it existed was the person singing it. I was working on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, wearing an Achtung Baby teeshirt and he told me that the month before he'd been in Ireland recording this song. I had the opportunity hearing him sing without amplification and no recording of Cash has ever done justice to the depth and grandness of his voice in person. That song was Oh Danny Boy...
He was a very down to earth person, June also. It seemed that he was having quite a bit of trouble with his knee. His character was that of a famous gunfighter that had become the town sheriff, but who had tuberculosis. June had a part too, but I can't remember her role. But they didn't fool around, they worked really hard and were very professional...
Everything about him just sends shivers down your spine , true true legend the kind that we kid ourselves still exist today ( except Nelson , Kristofferson etc.) God Bless John R. Cash!
There was a show done called Johnny Cash, the Man & His Music which included his returning to Dyess, AK to look at his old (gov't built) family home. That's the house you're asking about. It's available on dvd.
Beautiful job. I've always wished Johnny had done a video to this song. This is pretty close to what I wished for. Really enjoyed a lot of the rare & unique images - the mug shot, the engraved pistol (perfectly placed). Thanks.
Nice, Bono really channels Johnny with "nothin but the thought of you", and "sons turn their fathers in" then "I went with nothin, but the thought you'd be there too" expresses a remorse for a father that wasn't always there. But redemption is the theme, no doubt. The Wanderer went walkin... and driftin... and searching for one good man. Lookin you you. I went wandering!
I remember sitting with my friends at home and listening to "Zooroopa",the TV was on,sound was muted. We still did not know he passed away then, when suddenly his pictures appeared on TV,while this track just started playing on the stereo.pure magic.
MAN, THat was very good. I played this song for a live gig I did at my local coffee shop. I love the lyrics, I wished I wrote this song it means allot to me.
It's a historical mistake to use June Carter as Johnny's one. The fact is that Johnny was opened up, relationally by June and others, but that it was ultimately the reconciliation with God himself, that would have been in Johnny's mind.
'A spirit who would not break or bend, who would sit at his fathers right hand...'
The absolute best version of this song, Johnnys Voice so rich, U2's back up is so suttle yet so powerful.

That's complement, rather than compliment, but yes - interesting video - not sure the U2 backing quite suits his voice though.

@dfarmbrough i do agree with you on the backing track, it's more disco rather then subtle rock ;)

@connormcj25 Thanks :-)
dfarmbrough 10 months ago
@connormcj25 This is a mono version, or a kind of: it lacks a channel, there is not the jingle
(a jingle = a small metal disc, such as those arranged around the frame of a tambourine)
in the refrain.
ps
About the becking track: the live version is better
