I love driving around in London. I've been there so many times and people are amazed I've never taken the tube. I just find it more adventurous to drive a car but with the £8 ($14) congestion zone charge, £4 ($7) to park for an hour, and £80 ($140) to fill up the tank of gas, I am having second thoughts.
In Britain the vast majority of the driving public drive stick (or manual as it is called here - saying stick here will cause many to give you a confused look). Actually many perceive those who drive automatics as inferior drivers who failed to pass the test in a proper manual/stick car. I have only ever owned manual cars and wouldn't even consider an automatic. As for the 106, if you are on a budget thats the class of car hire companies will give you.Its a good choice for London.
@Fedaykin24 I know someone who pasted there test and drove manual cars for his life. then got a Automatic Mercedes Benz and found it soother than manual
You done very well - it took me 4 hrs to get on the M1 via the north circular road 20 years ago looks like you got confident quite quickly. But once on the M1 North its a piece of cake - well unless you need to turn around.
@datpimpinboy well yeah, but when you're in different countries you should atleast call things what they are actually called in that country. But then again, Americans aren't exactly International.
@jacksite2007 Well, he's still American, he's talking to Americans, so why should he? If you come to America it doesnt mean you need to start using all the American words and have an American accent. That's what he's called it his whole life, he doesnt need to change it for a vacation
@datpimpinboy But is is actually called a Dual Carriage Way- it is different to freeways etc and have completely different driving rules to them. You confirm my thoughts on Americans not using local terminology by basically saying I can use british terminology in the US- no i wouldnt! Maybe Europeans have respect for other countries... after all, we have been together for centuries...
He seemed to have got into it okay. I drive a truck to Southwest France every week from Manchester and switch from one side of the road to the other without a hitch when I get off the ferry. It's not as difficult as Americans think it'll be. After a week or so they'll be fine. I think the main problem they have is driving with a manual gearbox rather than an automatic.
Last autumn I visited UK and hired a car. First trip was directly in central London - never drove on the left hand side before. I actaully had no problems except for well... getting back out on M1!!! If you start out from Trafalgar (can you be more "central" than that?!) there are NO COHERENT direction signs. You get to see one now and then but at the next major junction you're lost. Best example: only the FOURTH taxi driver I asked at King's Cross gave me pertinent directions (head for Kentish)
man your brave driving in the center of london lol i live in london and i wouldnt dream of driving around there. too expensive because of the congestion charge and the traffic is omg. lol you should have just gone around the center of london OR hired a moped (scooter) if you wanted to see it.
Any American who can master a stick shift & then drive in a city of 8 million , on the other side of the road that they are accustomed to, deserves a medal. I count myself as a good driver, but London is motoring hell... like a slightly more organised Mumbai
LOL..Wusses..j/k. I drive every time I go to London...love it. Simple rule where ever you drive in the world..drivers side next to middle of road, that way you'll never make the mistake of driving on the wrong side. Also, read the signs...they mean what they say.
I would advise anyone that wishes to drive in London to get a book that gives you the run down of the road markings and general road rules tho.
lol try driving in an italian city ahaha. U see where that guy on the scooter totally cuts someone off? Try that but having it happen to you 20 times in 10 minutes ahhahaha. But i can't imagine driving on the left side of the road, shifting with my left hand.. SO AWKWARD ahhah.
You did well mate, at least you didn't crash your littleYugo (don't let the French hear you say that lol). If you ever drive in London again 1, Rent a bigger car, you will feel more comfortable 2, Just relax and go with the flow, turn on the radio, buy a coffee or whatever.
I get corrected all the time being an ignorant american. But I love the UK and I look forward to many more visits but hopefully more educated. THANKS!
@bellbottomtear Haha!! more importantly, did you like Leicester?.It must of been like going abroad twice. First to England, and then to Pakistan. Theres barely a white face in Leicester.
@timticklerful The reason for the car was to get to Leicester quickly rather than the tube and train. In the end a train would of been much quicker. I love the Tube in London and it is the only way to travel in London.
@bellbottomtear Hehe, the train nearly always beats the car in Britain and if you book in advance, the train is much, much cheaper too (bit like airlines). For some reason since privatisation the train system in Britain has gone for a more airline-style approach to passenger booking, not something that a turn-up-and-go passenger like myself is a fan of.
Still, you didn't do a bad job managing to negotiate London in a car on the wrong side of the road in a manual.
Amen....It's as bad, worse kind of, than Manhattan....only in mirror image...terrifying even WITH and automatic. You see nothing except your filling out an insurance claim. Total mistake...use the subways!
I am a professional drive all types of cars, Clios, Alfas, Mercs etc etc. Let me tell you about American big cars namely Cadillac, smoth ride on Motorways/Freeways but on B roads like surfing the waves, suspension so soft they make me feel seasick.
actually we call it a motorway, not a freeway, if it shows blue signs, your on a motorway, speed limit is 70mph, if it's green signs, your on a dual carriageway, speed limit is 60mph and driving london improves your driving skills ;)
I was in London over a year ago and I picked up my rental at night in the rain (2008 Saab 9-5 A/T). I became a pro after two days. I found it really exciting. After ten days of driving in dry, rain (spray), and snow, I managed to scratch the front bumper in a parking garage. I really missed it. I'll be going to Australia next month, so it shouldn't be do bad.
I'm an American and drive in London..Its not so bad once you get used to it..People are definately more polite than when I used to drive in NYC thats for sure...
