Wikipedia says annually 30,000 develop Anal cancer Worldwide, split evenly between developed/undeveloped countries, and that Woman account for more then half of those diagnosed. It also clearly states "An estimated 90% (27,400) were attributable to the Human Papillomavirus(HPV)"
@loagun I agree that the figures used in re: anal cancer are maximized: these are projections, and they are a realistic worst-case scenario. The City needed a campaign, an ad with a stinger. They knew what they were doing - got us talking about HIV. Fair or unfair, HPV rates are climbing, as are HIV cases in the 5 Boros (and the Metro Area). Actual numbers are unknown at this time. Too many people refuse to test.
I am straight however gays get a lot of blame when it comes to hiv but what about prostitutes, no one really mentions them. There are hookers out there who have unprotected sex with their clients but nobody speaks about them.

I have been tested before in the past and the question they have asked me was whether I have had sex with a man or whether I have had sex with a sex worker. He lives with chronic, sometimes debilitating pain. His spine is crumbling. He went 100% alternative, and he made it this far. But a virulent strain (most) of HIV will definitely starve the body of nutrients.
You have ZERO scientific evidence for your anecdote. The drug manufacturers freely list bone disintegration as a "side effect" of the meds and I have NEVER seen any peer reviewed science which links getting a reaction on one of those crap antibody tests is otherwise correlated to bone disease.

Just some mroe info from the CDC which justifies this video directly targeting gay men: 1 in 5 gay in 21 major cities is HIV+, while almost 1/3 of Black gay men are. Half of them are unaware of it. One thrd of those infected are practicing unsafe sex.

i think NYC health department has the statistics about who they need to target based on the number of cases and the demographics they deal with. As someone who lives in NYC who sees the level of homosexual activity in the city, i can understand why they targeted this ad they way they did for the public (within that city). I'm not accusing gays of anything or questioning their way of life, but i think people from other cities shouldn't criticize NYC's targeting based on their own stats.

We have PLENTY of PSA and education targeting everyone...to the point everyone is running around scared shitless to even touch someone- even those groups that are at MUCH LESS RISK. Those numbers can't be right. First off because there's a % of women infected! And I don't believe you can blame the "gay" drug user any more than the "straight" drug users. There are always three main way of contraction: gay sex, straight sex and drug use. The real statistics are probably more like 60% of 70% .. (i'm making up number). I have seen, from very reputable Doctors in the field, that 70-80% of all new HIV infections in America are from gay people, IV drug users, or a combo of the two. I have no problem whatsoever with that, and it is already done nationwide at all sorts of levels. Still, there can be directed and concentrated ads towards those groups that are at the highest risk. Be that gays, blacks, latinos, whites....whatever. Just because gays happen to be a "protected" group, does not mean they cannot be targeted heavier for education on this disease.
Also, research shows over and over again that scare tactics do not change behavior, they simply cause people to go further into denial because the images and words push targeted audiences away instead of engaging them.
This is very bad social marketing. Dept of health needs a better ad agency.
I thought we were waaaaaaaay past the day of stigmatizing men as the only folks who get HIV. Maybe this is part of a campaign, but then the others should have been rolled out simultaneously. My gripe with this, however, is that this is tacky, heavy-handed, sensationalistic, etc.

@ndnbluebill HPV is a viral infection. If you have a suppressed immune system, HPV will be able to infect you more readily and therefore you are at a higher chance of receiving anal cancer.

scare tactics aren't very effective. this PSA is exacerbating the stigma of HIV/AIDS and male homosexuality in our society; it does little to educate us on what to do to PREVENT HIV/AIDS (except the "always use a condom" at the very end). i think PSAs should warn people of the dangers of sexually-transmitted diseases without focusing so much on the potentially gruesome aspects and consequences of not using a condom and focus more on what we can do to protect ourselves and help those with HIV
I presently work at an HIV clinic and I think this is a powerful PSA that helps highlight the links between HIV and other debilitating illnesses. That being said, I think it would be more helpful if this PSA didn't just feature men, specifically gay men. HIV is an unbiased disease, and yet there's still the sentiment that HIV only targets gay men, something this PSA (most likely unintentionally) reinforces. Add women and straight men to this PSA, and I think it would be just about perfect.
Believe me, this ad's indirect target of gay men was not unintentional. The amount of thought that goes into any type of advertisement is incredible. EVERYTHING is intentional. They knew what they were doing by having only male actors in the advertisement. It's very disturbing. I would have thought by now that we, as a culture, would have moved on from this VERY incorrect stereotype.

That's why dementia is a real possibility, over time (20 years? - how long?). And ALL cancers are more threatening, because CD4/T-cells are created to fight specific invaders (like cancers). Wikipedia says annually 30,000 develop Anal cancer Worldwide, split evenly between developed/undeveloped countries, and that Woman account for more then half of those diagnosed. It also clearly states "An estimated 90% (27,400) were attributable to the Human Papillomavirus(HPV)"

@loagun I agree that the figures used in re: anal cancer are maximized: these are projections, and they are a realistic worst-case scenario. The City needed a campaign, an ad with a stinger. They knew what they were doing - got us talking about HIV. Fair or unfair, HPV rates are climbing, as are HIV cases in the 5 Boros (and the Metro Area). Actual numbers are unknown at this time. Too many people refuse to test.

Many sex workers try to behave responsibly (esp. those who work because they will starve if they don't) and have a relationship with a clinic, already. Sex workers in developing/undeveloped countries have serious problems: they are afraid to test, because of fear of being thrown out of households/villages, and/or beaten. Annie Lenox spoke on this.

I have been tested before in the past and the question they have asked me was whether I have had sex with a man or whether I have had sex with a sex worker. Think about it, they would only ask you those questions because gay men and prostitutes are the highest groups that are at risk.

He lives with chronic, sometimes debilitating pain. His spine is crumbling. He went 100% alternative, and he made it this far. But a virulent strain (most) of HIV will definitely starve the body of nutrients.

@mykoolaidtastesfunny The reason we do not have double-blind studies in "peer review" pet journals in re: Osteopenia rates, etc., is this: the drugs were fast-tracked because they worked in trials that were not long enough (so we have no idea what might happen to us in 20 years, true) but they stopped living people from becoming corpses. I'm not sure why I'm writing you - we are just taking up time and space. I am happy that the City is trying to do something creative.

Just some mroe info from the CDC which justifies this video directly targeting gay men: 1 in 5 gay in 21 major cities is HIV+, while almost 1/3 of Black gay men are. Half of them are unaware of it. One thrd of those infected are practicing unsafe sex.

i think NYC health department has the statistics about who they need to target based on the number of cases and the demographics they deal with. As someone who lives in NYC who sees the level of homosexual activity in the city, i can understand why they targeted this ad they way they did for the public (within that city). I'm not accusing gays of anything or questioning their way of life, but i think people from other cities shouldn't criticize NYC's targeting based on their own stats.

I am actually upset by this commercial. I understand that majority of the hiv virus carriers were homosexual... but the strong gay under tone in this commercial is not cool. its obviously just not homosexuals that get this disease. and I would be nice for the NYC Health Department to make this clear. Those numbers can't be right. First off because there's a % of women infected! And I don't believe you can blame the "gay" drug user any more than the "straight" drug users. There are always three main way of contraction: gay sex, straight sex and drug use. The real statistics are probably more like 60% of 70% .. (i'm making up number). I have seen, from very reputable Doctors in the field, that 70-80% of all new HIV infections in America are from gay people, IV drug users, or a combo of the two. That is SCARY...yet it also helps in the sense we can easily target them to slap some sense into those taking high risks. Yes they do. In 2008, 80% of those diagnosed contracted HIV through gay sex or IV drug use. Just 12% were from heterosexuals. It is a disease that affects gays FAR more than heteros. Once you factor in population percentages- gays being ~3% of the population, those numbers are even more scary.

God this commercial is so annoying. not only gay people get HIV. if theyre going to continue circulating this commercial they need to add straight people too. adding children would also probably get the message across that EVERYONE is subject to getting HIV

@Fagwatch2011 It seems like your purposefully manipulating data here. You said 700/100,000 homos have aids, and are now saying that 20,000/100,000 homos have aids. You also said 12/100,000 'straight' men have aids, and then later change that number to 125/100,000.
See, it doesn't count as a fact if you just make it up and change the numbers as you go along...
70/100 homos can fly too, oh yeah and they have laser vision!!

@christianchamp2002 while your comments may be true, the statistic still shows that gays are being infected with HIV at a much faster rate then heterosexuals. In fact, male homosexual infection has been on the rise, while other risk groups have been declining. Facts are facts. Yes, HIV can infect anyone, we all know that by now, but we need to curve the infection rate among gays. And if it takes a slightly disturbing or what some call "hypocritical" commercial to do so, then so be it.

Can you imagine talking to a gay guy with words as: DEMENTIA, ANAL CANCER and OSTEOPOROSIS and have him listen about hiv prevention?
Are gay guys actual people or do we refer to them with capital words that come STRAIGHT out of science books?

It appears that the PSA was targeting the Gay community. The bit about Anal Cancer I am sure was to discourage Anal Sex. The latest research indicates that Anal Cancer is caused by HPV. All this PSA did was confuse and mislead the public. It just reaffirmed stereotypes and did not educate.

@ndnbluebill HPV is a viral infection. If you have a suppressed immune system, HPV will be able to infect you more readily and therefore you are at a higher chance of receiving anal cancer.

I feel like this video is insulting. First off, anybody can get HIV, not just homosexuals. Second, It seemed like this video was saying, "you were stupid, HIV is your punishment." WHat about the people born with HIV huh? Is that their fault? Third, please don't tell me I'm the only one who thought they made Anal Cancer seem like the worst thing you could get?

scare tactics aren't very effective. this PSA is exacerbating the stigma of HIV/AIDS and male homosexuality in our society; it does little to educate us on what to do to PREVENT HIV/AIDS (except the "always use a condom" at the very end). i think PSAs should warn people of the dangers of sexually-transmitted diseases without focusing so much on the potentially gruesome aspects and consequences of not using a condom and focus more on what we can do to protect ourselves and help those with HIV

I presently work at an HIV clinic and I think this is a powerful PSA that helps highlight the links between HIV and other debilitating illnesses. That being said, I think it would be more helpful if this PSA didn't just feature men, specifically gay men. HIV is an unbiased disease, and yet there's still the sentiment that HIV only targets gay men, something this PSA (most likely unintentionally) reinforces. Add women and straight men to this PSA, and I think it would be just about perfect.

Believe me, this ad's indirect target of gay men was not unintentional. The amount of thought that goes into any type of advertisement is incredible. EVERYTHING is intentional. They knew what they were doing by having only male actors in the advertisement. It's very disturbing. I would have thought by now that we, as a culture, would have moved on from this VERY incorrect stereotype.

Thank you to whomever put this video together. The level of stupidity, carelessness, and recklessness w/in the "gay community" is as disheartening as it is well-known.

@donde2k Yes, there is a lot of unsafe sex in the gay community. But is that the only place where this is happening? The point is not that this video is inaccurate, but that it is incomplete and represents only a part of the facts. As it is the gay community suffers from prejudice, so there is no fairness in further projecting such prejudice even though implicitly or by omission of the responsibilities of others.

infact i'd love to know why it is a problem for only gay people and not for straight, maybe who is straight is immune to hiv? i live in italy and my country is so prestoric about LGBT's rights community, by the way a spot like this (cruel and not right) it is an offence for all people that are HIV+ to scare people about desease..

Did this PSA at any point ever say or even imply this? No. It is a problem for gay people because they are a very small part of the population, yet make up the majority of new HIV infections. This is in America, where the location of the state that put on this PSA is located.

This ad is now being viewed all over the world, but it is aimed at gay men. So someone might believe that only gay men are at risk and will not take proper precautions because they are not gay and think that this is something only gay men are at risk of getting. The ad fell short. Face it.

Nobody believes this, there has been massive amounts of education for DECADES stating that anyone can get HIV, and they are completely correct. The ad was directed at gay men in NY, I don;t care if several dozen other people in the world are viewing it.
