  • u dont need to give ignition at any point???

  • i tried this but i can never get to work even when i put it on second gear...good video though

  • I think u did well speaking dude. Very informative and helpful. Thanks!

  • lol toyota mr2!

  • good video to the point thanks mate

  • it was thank you

  • Quick question-can any damage to the car or electric system be done attempting this? THX

  • @mrdave777 maybe some clutch wear, but its not any harsher on your clutch than a bad shift or two would be. other than that all youre doing is forcing the engine to turn over by locking it in place with your wheels (which are rotating) instead of forcing the engine to turn over with your electric starter motor. your engine wont know the difference and your clutch will be fine.

  • Super helpful, thanks

  • That looks like an apartment complex my friend lived in when I went to school in NC

  • Thanks for help :D

  • Good vid. — thanks.

  • do it in reverse it spins faster

  • thanks alot man that was very helpful

  • With Youtube, who needs parents?

  • Dude you really need to get that airbag replaced.

  • Very helpful thanks for the video :)

  • you dont have to actually turn the key in the ignition?

  • @CRAZYXBLACKXMAN not on just to the aux on position...

  • @yamahabb400 on the front seat, and make sure to use a match to see if it worked

  • if ur in 2nd gear while ur foots on the clutch...wen you let go of the clutch wont the car stall/turn off?

  • @RMz09x

    No,

Almost all cars can sustain a roll from idle revs through 3rd gear.

  • @billybobjoe198 huh? O.o lol

  • This is hilarious, tonight at Sonic, I went to leave after eating and my damn MR2 wouldn't start. Luckily a bum was there to help me out and we wound up doing this roll start. Advice, use 2nd gear and when you get rolling enough, drop the clutch and give it gas, don't edge off the clutch slowly.

  • @deathlord747 so its better if you suddenly let go of the clutch instead of doin it slowly?

  • I have a question. If my car's battery is dead but its facing uphill, if I push it backwards downhill and put the gear in reverse and try to start it will it ignite?

  • @th3coolon3 Yes :)

  • pee on the battery

  • @NotJawknee Dropping the clutch is the best thing to do.

  • helpful video ...nice

  • Useful video, good on ya

  • can you that trick to a auto tranny?

  • @super00fiss Not unless you have a '50s-era first-generation automatic. They actually had the bits necessary to make it work. Anything newer all you'll succeed in doing is rolling it down a hill.

  • @Scoth3 sir mine is a 1996 hyundai elantra 1.5 dohc

  • @Scoth3 HAHA this comment is priceless

  • @super00fiss yup u got be on a deacent hill or get pushed buy another car or truck to atleast 35 mph then put it in gear and tuen the key on it will fire right up

  • very helpfull

  • the best and fastest way to jump a manual i reverse with ur left foot out.

  • good video man :)

  • This was actually pretty helpful man. Thank you.

  • Love the Mister-2 used in this example. What was core problem - starter? I have the 3SGte (SW20) 1991..

  • @AttractionQuartet Actually nothing was wrong with the running gear in the car. I just used it to demonstrate. The main problem was it was hit hard in the right front by someone turning in front of me and leaving me nowhere to go. But I have another MR2 now!

  • Comment removed

  • its not true about turning all electronics off, the engine spark plugs get electricity from the alternator, when you release the clutch, (engage the engine) ur alternator will turn and your car will start

  • Thanx it helped

  • Thanks a lot man, have a busted starter motor so I need to know this.

  • only a fucking idiot dont know how to roll start a car

  • @NotJawknee Yes, you have to "pop" the clutch or let it out really fast. Much faster than you normally would.

  • @everysubjectman no you dont.. your wrong

  • @SkyThunder1 If you let it it normally, it wont start

  • pretty cool dude. now i know

  • Do not do with in a car with a catalytic converter.

  • great vid, thank you!

  • i saw some guys doing this the other day how and why would you push start a car i've driven autos and standards for years

  • If the starter goes, you need to push start it to get it going.

  • @alphaman87 ... if it wont start on it's own? jeez you're a smart one aren't ya.

  • @BaldLocks bitch

  • @alphaman87 haha you just made my day buddy.

  • what car is it?

  • @ATE44 who the fuck care about what car it is??

  • @ATE44 1992 Toyota MR2.

  • @Scoth3 only reason i clicked on this video is because i saw the area between the shifter and dash and said.. wait.. is that a mr2?? ha

  • and also those wires blowed the fuse and we was screwed that night. thanks for the tips

  • having a manual transmission is like the best way to go because my fathers truck we had to replace a heater core in it about a week ago.there was these wires that went to the cluch controll switch we went to the store and when we got back out the thing would not start so some guys pushed us off and it started by poping the cluch.i bet u guys did not want to hear this story but oh well

  • I did that before on my 1981 Mitsubishi Lancer, Jumped Started it and odd things happen, When I was about to turn it off it won't turn off,. First I tried to remove the Alternator's Plug, No Use. 2nd remove the Battery Terminals, No Use. Can Someone answer what just happened to my car that time? It happed to me 4 times now since last year,. and that was really odd,. some say my car was alive,.I just LOLed at them!!

  • That's what you call Dieseling, when a car runs after shutting off. I think an '81 Lancer is carbureted, which means the first two places I'd look are your throttle/idle position and timing. If the throttle isn't quite returning to idle, it can continue feeding it enough gas to keep running for awhile even without spark. If the timing is off, it can do the same.

  • You're right, it's Carbureted. Is it normal for my car? Or somethin's wrong with my car?

  • Definitely not normal - you typically want your car to shut off when you turn off the key. But, it may or may not be anything terribly wrong. Could be something simple. Worth getting checked out.

  • Thanks for the info Sir,. ^_^

  • can you roll backwards and jump start your car while in reverse?

  • It's in the description :) It'll work, with some extra caveats.

  • yes you can

  • @dtkb82 yes

  • Thanks,

Cool, works like charm on my 05 Acura TL manual. But the battery was full I guess, does the trick that works the same on the dead or almost dead battery, I wonder?

  • I noted that in the desc. It'll work as long as it isn't so utterly and completely dead that it's a big drain on the system. It ought to work for most battery killings though. Leaving headlights on and stuff. The main time you might run into trouble is trying to do this to a car that's sat for years and the battery is beyond just dead.

  • Thanks again for the reply!

    Cheers.

  • Stop taking those stupid pills. Of course it works.

  • totally helpful. thanks.

  • Only Works For Manual TransAxle`s

  • Nope, Some autos have a key input in the gearbox that lets you put it out of park position into any gear you want.

  • You can move the selector, but outside of some extremely old auto transmissions, it won't actually go into gear. All you'll succeed in doing is rolling your car down the hill in neutral.

  • thanks dude..............

  • Thanks mate, just got the old escort started

  • Thank You - that was exactly what I was looking for - I pushed - the wife drive and we got the Car going.

thanks for taking the time to make the vid and post it

  • My car is also a MR2 and heck its stuck outside right now.. damm

  • dude, ty soo much

i watched this vid this morning and my car broke down on the way to a house party

i remd wat to do and it worked, so thanks alot :]

  • cool thanks

  • hey what happend to your car?

  • Girl in a Ford Explorer turned left in front of me, leaving me nowhere to go. Smacked her right on the right rear wheel. Ruled totally her fault, etc, but car was still totalled.

  • oh to bad

  • really good to know when you use a manual.

  • do you have to turn the key?

  • Put it into the On/Run position and leave it there for the whole process. You don't turn it to start it.

  • even when you get it going? So if it works, you'll be driving it with the key still in the On/Run position?

  • Well of course. That's how you normally drive your car.

  • The lighs on the cluster will dissapear (like when you start your car normally )

The alternator will soon recharge the battery so it should be good after a few minutes of the car running...unless the battery is completely dead.

  • Your key is usally turned to the on position, it only gos to the next one to start the car, then it gos back to on.

  • or if u grew up in europe all the kids in the neighborhood pushed the car down the street till it started and than got into it while it was moving... good times

  • Depends on a couple things. If you have a long hill where you can get a good bit of speed going, you can do it slowly and make it nice and smooth. If you have a short hill and can't get going very fast before you run out of room, you'll want to do it faster. It'll be jerkier, but it'll work.

  • Toyota MR2 by chance? 90-95 ?

  • Holy shit, I totally lived in that apartment complex. Then again, I've seen hundreds of nearly identical ones, so maybe not. Mine was Sandy Springs, Georgia.

  • These are in East Cobb, so probably not the same. Jefferson Lakeside was the name of it (I haven't lived there in a couple years, so no harm in saying it now). Terrible place.

  • Curses....my spot was pretty gawdawful too. Roach-free, though, which was a major plus.

  • Nice Toyota MR2, my mom has a red one.

  • that was pretty cool.

never new you could do that

  • this ownley works with a stick shift?

  • yea

  • I was kidding, sheesh...

  • lol 19ford is a loser ey...

  • uuummmm i did....hear the low rumble at 1:18 on....dumb ass

  • lol, now whos the dumb ass. word on the street is that your a loser....

  • Sorry my older brother doesnt have a youtube. so he uses my account to coomment then i have to deal with the people. so u better say ur sorry!

  • thaks for apologising. Now tell your brother he sucks dick.

  • i don't know u or ur brother, but tell him he sucks sailor balls

  • This works really well with Rotaries too...

    Thanks for the video.

  • helped me out.

    thanks

  • what if ur on flat land?

  • Push the shit out of it!

  • have some redneck push it for you

  • @johndelaghetto They u have to 2 get someone to help u push your car

  • Hey!! You are my husband.

  • Thank you for the info, i have had it explained before, but seeing it, makes it look a lot easier.

  • can you do this on fuel injected engine?

    pls reply.

    thx.

  • Yes, it'll work fine on EFI engines. The car in the vid is EFI. In fact, it's generally easiest on a FI car. Carbed cars are pretty easy too, but if it's cold or hasn't run in awhile it can take a bit to get the gas going. Diesel engines are the hardest since they're so high compression. Might take some starting fluid or the like for diesel.

  • thats a mr2. i have a black 91

  • @Scoth3 Ive push started diesels. You use high gear and deffently pop the clutch. You would probably need starting fluid when it's cold in a diesel, but most of the time you don't

  • Ok, i just tried it and it worked. Sweeeeeeet. Second gear baby.

  • Thanks dude. You are awesome. Great job.

  • Mr. Scoth3, you're well spoken, so you really shouldn't say you're not much of a public speaker. Just a reminder to all, this method ONLY works for a dead battery. If the car has mechanical issues, it will be inconveniently stuck at the bottom of a hill- I've learned this the hard way. Thanks

  • that works good....but it's easy to do in reverse also.....and probably not as hard on the transmission.....

  • wow!

  • i see your air bag has been deployed. stinks.

  • Yeah, someone decided to turn left in front of me, leaving me nowhere to go. That it was still drivable after more or less t-boning a Ford Explorer says a lot about the strength of the car :)

  • Thank you :) I had to do this this morning so that I could get my car going, to get it to the mechanic and get the starter changed. I couldn't believe how easy it was (of course I wasn't the one doing the pushing - twas my husband). Thanks for the video!

  • a girl that drives stick... thats hot

  • hell yeah it is, i've always that the same lol

  • One more question: Do you have to push the gas pedal at all?

  • Generally not. Should get going on its own. If you have an old carbureted vehicle that you'd normally have to pump the gas while starting, it might not hurt to give the gas pedal a push or two before going. But you really shouldn't need to. I never did with any of my cars (and I was always good at killing my batteries)

  • this shuld take you back in the future?

  • I have to do that probably just to go and get my 96 Ford Ranger a new battery. So wait, the engine will turn over and just start running?? im lost on that

  • As long as it's a stick, the key is in the On/Run position, and your alternator is in okay shape, it should work. If your battery is extremely dead, to the point of putting a huge load on the electrical system, it might be a little trickier, but it should still work.

  • Scoth3 , Thanks I got it to work. Thats crazy!

  • is that a monster knobs shift knob? I just purchased one, waiting on it to come in.

  • I'm not sure what the original source of the knob is. It's actually the knob off my very first car (a 1983 Firebird), although it wasn't the original knob for that car either. I've always liked it better than the knobs that came with my later cars, so I've just hung onto it.

  • can you start it with out the key

  • No, still has to have the Key in the On/Run position for this to work. If you tried this with it off, you'd just spin the engine but it wouldn't catch and run.

  • the key is what activates the ignition circuit. When you remove the key from a running engine, the engine turns off (you know this already), so it's no use trying to start an engine if you don't turn it on with the key first

  • So this will not work on an automatic trans?

  • No. Automatic transmissions work on a completely different system. If you tried this in an automatic, all you'd do is be rolling your car down a hill. Fun, maybe, but won't get it running.

  • Also one other thing, after the car starts moving and you let the clutch go, do you turn the key to ignition, or is the car supposed to start when you let the clutch go because the key is already in ON position?

  • You want to have the key in the On position before you start rolling at all. This way when you pop the clutch, the engine starts rotating and catches. You're basically using the wheels and motion of the car to get the engine going instead of the starter motor.

  • Thanks for sharing, very useful vid.

I'm guessing it's best to get the car on a slightly steep road so that it doesn't need to be pushed, rather it rolls down?

  • Yeah, hills are definitely better than pushing, especially if you're alone. It's pretty tricky pushing a car up to a speed to be able to do this while trying to steer it and pop the clutch.

  • Thanks 4 sharing

  • Thank you this was very helpful

  • why did you insult the man who made this video?he was nervous enough when making it and he's oviously self-conscious of his image.on youtube people have two choices.either leave a positive comment like "nice video it helped me alot" and make people feel good about themselves of leave a negitive comment like "u have a big head".now im not insulting you by saying this but please grow up and be nicer to people in future.the world is a nicer place when everybody is nice to one-another.

  • i concur. nice speech dude

  • very helpful thankyou. and nice to see an american driving a manual for a change

  • good point :) Here in Europe where I live it's an automatic gearbox that is a rarity :)

  • Is that in Naples Florida?

  • Suburb of Atlanta, GA actually.

  • Sandy Springs! Holy crap, it is my old apartments.

  • u have a big head

  • Well... thanks, I guess. I suppose that's better than being called ugly.

  • yep i just had my car died the other day..push started it woohoo

  • Right on, thanks.

  • Thanks for the video!
