@mrdave777 maybe some clutch wear, but its not any harsher on your clutch than a bad shift or two would be. other than that all youre doing is forcing the engine to turn over by locking it in place with your wheels (which are rotating) instead of forcing the engine to turn over with your electric starter motor. your engine wont know the difference and your clutch will be fine.
This is hilarious, tonight at Sonic, I went to leave after eating and my damn MR2 wouldn't start. Luckily a bum was there to help me out and we wound up doing this roll start. Advice, use 2nd gear and when you get rolling enough, drop the clutch and give it gas, don't edge off the clutch slowly.
I have a question. If my car's battery is dead but its facing uphill, if I push it backwards downhill and put the gear in reverse and try to start it will it ignite?
@super00fiss Not unless you have a '50s-era first-generation automatic. They actually had the bits necessary to make it work. Anything newer all you'll succeed in doing is rolling it down a hill.
@super00fiss yup u got be on a deacent hill or get pushed buy another car or truck to atleast 35 mph then put it in gear and tuen the key on it will fire right up
@super00fiss yup u got be on a decent hill or get pushed buy another car or truck to at-least 35 mph then put it in gear and turn the key on it will fire right up
@AttractionQuartet Actually nothing was wrong with the running gear in the car. I just used it to demonstrate. The main problem was it was hit hard in the right front by someone turning in front of me and leaving me nowhere to go. But I have another MR2 now!
its not true about turning all electronics off, the engine spark plugs get electricity from the alternator, when you release the clutch, (engage the engine) ur alternator will turn and your car will start
having a manual transmission is like the best way to go because my fathers truck we had to replace a heater core in it about a week ago.there was these wires that went to the cluch controll switch we went to the store and when we got back out the thing would not start so some guys pushed us off and it started by poping the cluch.i bet u guys did not want to hear this story but oh well
I did that before on my 1981 Mitsubishi Lancer, Jumped Started it and odd things happen, When I was about to turn it off it won't turn off,. First I tried to remove the Alternator's Plug, No Use. 2nd remove the Battery Terminals, No Use. Can Someone answer what just happened to my car that time? It happed to me 4 times now since last year,. and that was really odd,. some say my car was alive,.I just LOLed at them!!
That's what you call Dieseling, when a car runs after shutting off. I think an '81 Lancer is carbureted, which means the first two places I'd look are your throttle/idle position and timing. If the throttle isn't quite returning to idle, it can continue feeding it enough gas to keep running for awhile even without spark. If the timing is off, it can do the same.
Definitely not normal - you typically want your car to shut off when you turn off the key. But, it may or may not be anything terribly wrong. Could be something simple. Worth getting checked out.
Cool, works like charm on my 05 Acura TL manual. But the battery was full I guess, does the trick that works the same on the dead or almost dead battery, I wonder?
I noted that in the desc. It'll work as long as it isn't so utterly and completely dead that it's a big drain on the system. It ought to work for most battery killings though. Leaving headlights on and stuff. The main time you might run into trouble is trying to do this to a car that's sat for years and the battery is beyond just dead.
You can move the selector, but outside of some extremely old auto transmissions, it won't actually go into gear. All you'll succeed in doing is rolling your car down the hill in neutral.
Girl in a Ford Explorer turned left in front of me, leaving me nowhere to go. Smacked her right on the right rear wheel. Ruled totally her fault, etc, but car was still totalled.
or if u grew up in europe all the kids in the neighborhood pushed the car down the street till it started and than got into it while it was moving... good times
Depends on a couple things. If you have a long hill where you can get a good bit of speed going, you can do it slowly and make it nice and smooth. If you have a short hill and can't get going very fast before you run out of room, you'll want to do it faster. It'll be jerkier, but it'll work.
Holy shit, I totally lived in that apartment complex. Then again, I've seen hundreds of nearly identical ones, so maybe not. Mine was Sandy Springs, Georgia.
These are in East Cobb, so probably not the same. Jefferson Lakeside was the name of it (I haven't lived there in a couple years, so no harm in saying it now). Terrible place.
Yes, it'll work fine on EFI engines. The car in the vid is EFI. In fact, it's generally easiest on a FI car. Carbed cars are pretty easy too, but if it's cold or hasn't run in awhile it can take a bit to get the gas going. Diesel engines are the hardest since they're so high compression. Might take some starting fluid or the like for diesel.
@Scoth3 Ive push started diesels. You use high gear and deffently pop the clutch. You would probably need starting fluid when it's cold in a diesel, but most of the time you don't
Mr. Scoth3, you're well spoken, so you really shouldn't say you're not much of a public speaker. Just a reminder to all, this method ONLY works for a dead battery. If the car has mechanical issues, it will be inconveniently stuck at the bottom of a hill- I've learned this the hard way. Thanks
Yeah, someone decided to turn left in front of me, leaving me nowhere to go. That it was still drivable after more or less t-boning a Ford Explorer says a lot about the strength of the car :)
Thank you :) I had to do this this morning so that I could get my car going, to get it to the mechanic and get the starter changed. I couldn't believe how easy it was (of course I wasn't the one doing the pushing - twas my husband). Thanks for the video!
Generally not. Should get going on its own. If you have an old carbureted vehicle that you'd normally have to pump the gas while starting, it might not hurt to give the gas pedal a push or two before going. But you really shouldn't need to. I never did with any of my cars (and I was always good at killing my batteries)
I have to do that probably just to go and get my 96 Ford Ranger a new battery. So wait, the engine will turn over and just start running?? im lost on that
As long as it's a stick, the key is in the On/Run position, and your alternator is in okay shape, it should work. If your battery is extremely dead, to the point of putting a huge load on the electrical system, it might be a little trickier, but it should still work.
I'm not sure what the original source of the knob is. It's actually the knob off my very first car (a 1983 Firebird), although it wasn't the original knob for that car either. I've always liked it better than the knobs that came with my later cars, so I've just hung onto it.
No, still has to have the Key in the On/Run position for this to work. If you tried this with it off, you'd just spin the engine but it wouldn't catch and run.
the key is what activates the ignition circuit. When you remove the key from a running engine, the engine turns off (you know this already), so it's no use trying to start an engine if you don't turn it on with the key first
No. Automatic transmissions work on a completely different system. If you tried this in an automatic, all you'd do is be rolling your car down a hill. Fun, maybe, but won't get it running.
