well, speaking for myself, the clip in the beginning of the woman putting on makeup and kissing her boyfriend and bringing him a meal only to be pushed away, ignored and complained at actually made my stomach turn.
then again, it resonates with me on a very personal level
Ok, I see what your saying, but I think the song it seld speaks on a much bigger picture, as this clip was not made by John, it's some one else interpretation.
Nigger orignally meant someone who does lowly work. It is usually implied toward black people, but a long time ago, it meant whoever does lowly work. John Lennon was implying that women are the lowliest of the lowly; an infuriating statement, but so true, even today.
After all, who really values a clean house, the husband's day organized, a fully pantry and refigerator, and clean, disciplined, and well-educated kids? Not society, at all.
How true. The word Nigger is not a color or race but a treatment of your fellow humans. Anyone that is unjustly treated or not treated as an equal can relate to the word. Many times good men are treated very badly and abused by women. Most of the time you never hear of them. So it's not just women.
This was the first song on the lennon album "sometime in nyc". This song is prob one his most powerful tunes as a solo artist. Scott Muni a well known DJ in NYC played the song as soon as the album came out in 1972 but got very limited play because of the word nigger. Lennon sung this song on dick cavett and live in nyc the same year but both perfomances dont even come close to the studio version.
Nice video. Was that guy watching a video from John Lennon's song called, "Whatever Gets You Through The Night"? I could've sworn that I remember that video had alot of cartoons in it.
its not about being racist. this song has nothing to do with him discriminating against black people. Its about women being treated as slaves just as black people were. Why he chose to use the N-word I have no idea. I feel that was a mistake. Song has an amazing concept and so much emotion but a little misguided in the word usage.
Here is a definition of "nigger" that some might find of interest: Used as a disparaging term for a member of any socially, economically, or politically deprived group of people: "Gun owners are the new niggers . . . of society" (John Aquilino).
that woman in red! the dancing is irritating and disturbing!

A word is just a word until you put meaning into it.

@miniheli Couldn't agree more. For example: If I say frack and everyone knows it means fuck, then whats the difference?

So ahead of its time. This really heightens my respect for John.
All the lyrics, so true.
I also think men are oppressed as well, but in a different way. However, I still think women are more oppressed in general.

What do you mean by "I guess"? That is like the most politically correct statement ever in the history of the universe.
LOL, someone's gonna post this on BASH.

Why is this song cut short? I wanted to hear the 2nd stanza and the guitar solo in the middle. Anyways, cool video and very powerful message.
