They do have brilliant and big ideas and i pray that their ideas are taken and used. it will make such a difference. people don't realise how amazing Afica is and the difference listeninig to their ideas would make.
They lend out a bookkeeping entry called credit. Its all just a game: "Debt forgiven, debt forgiven!". What do they care? The IMF is still holding American birth certificates as chattel collateral against it.
Brilliant film! This should be a grounbreaking film in challenging the mainstream notion that the west knows best. I hope the film motivates people to support economic growth rather than counselling sessions for Africa!
I have to ask; is any effort being made to persuade Governments to fulfil their regulatory duty and oversee the function and practise of NGO programs in their respective countries?
Great short, I would love to see the rest of the footage. Is it not common sense that in order to get positive social returns you must consult the local community? It is not debatable that NGO's do a lot of good but it is also well known that they waste huge amounts of money and resources.
WillyWunder has made some good points. Since when did any Western NGO campaign for or fund a major infrastructure or development project in the South?
I've been working and talking with NGO people. I saw those "White Elephants"-projects standing around. Not all of them do it that way - some are supporting private business. But that's the exception. I heard an comment from an NGO-administrative: "If you want to be supported with money for your enterprise - forget it. Thats too complicated and takes too much time. If you build a "Womens Group" you get money faster."
Thank you!!! Great! That is what people should notice! Especially the demonstration tourists in western countries! It makes me sick to listen all the stories of this "NGO-self help". Most of them are like taht. It has been growing since the start of the development aid. Why should this industry have an intrest to make the situation better?
Great video short v honest and refreshing I hate this teach a man to fish stuff its typical NGO speak people in Ghana don't need teaching they need resources thankyou very much. The guy in the film who talks of liberty hits the nail on the head. NGO's are accountable to noone but themselves and are happily demeaning democracy and with their low horizons doing humanity no favours.
This video highlights the complexity of NGO work. There is often a gap between what is offered and what is wanted. But at the same time local people, like people everywhere have different ideas abou what is needed.
The men shown in this video for instance may have very different problems to many women and children who also deserve support.
There is no one answer - only that us NGOs listen more, and many now do.
Makes you feel aware of what are the needs of these people and what they need. The government should focus on what these people want instead of forcing them and giving them what the government wants. They have "BIG DREAMS".
Interesting to discover an African's perspective on money given to Aids projects. HIV has been promoted in the west as Africa's single enemy, are other issues being swept under the carpet? Nobody in the west can be held accountable for aids -- is it freeing us from guilt and responsibility? It's such a low bar. Yes, of course HIV is a big problem, but why do we assume that all African people want is simply to not get sick!!? All people deserve to grow & to build their lives & countries.
It is amazing to see the low horizons NGOs are willing to reach for when giving aid to developing nations...they don't want a hole in the ground, they want a toilet just like we do!
This film is important for the average Joe to see. Giving money is important, but we must pick and choose who we give it through to be sure it is put to the most effective use for those who need it.
It is sad how people in the Western world think that Africans cannot do anything for themselves. I will link this to the fact that most of the time they are sitting there waiting for somebody to do things since they don't like taking risks. But this documentary is bringing their minds home.
It seems ridiculous how wrong these NGO's are getting it, when their intentions seem not to marry up with their achievements one little bit. There is a real need to change this crazy view of the help and support they feel Africans need.
eye opening and to the point! if only more people knew about the NGO's true agenda. The NGO's in this doc hinder the Africans rather than helping them to move forward.
very intresting, highlights the "efforts" of NGOs which although "might" have a good intention to begin with, have infact helped very little in actual development. it is this kind of infomation, and idea's or even just the basics of listening to the people that live in the area that can make the diffrence.
An issue that deserves more publicity. This doc highlights how the best efforts of NGOs are often far from useful, a sad though necessary revelation that perhaps a wider audience may help to change.
Great to see such an honest video. To actually get on the ground and see what these people want and need, this is what really matters. They do not want to be told what to do. If you get caught up by all the hype surrounding many NGO's things will not move on.
I worked in international NGO as intern and I saw many problems that are deep-rooted. Most NGO workers in "developed" countries tend to have their own speciality trained in their school, and that causes problems. They tend to be only interested in their own field, and fail to capture the whole view, leaving the essential problem intact. As a result, same sad situation comes back again after they left.
The most important thing I got from the film was that most Africans want the chance to work their way out of poverty. Not small scale work but large scale industry. Enhanced envorimoments which aid is just not bringing.
Wow, I'm just really amazed by how good these WorldWRITE videos are! More people need to see these so that they aren't fooled into thinking that all these "helping" NGOs are doing what is best for the people of Ghana. At least WorldWrite are showing us what's really going on!
In the Philippines, this is called NGOism, the unquestioning worship of what NGOs do for the poor. There are a lot of NGOs that actually absorb money to run overhead administration costs, while so little trickles down to the people who are supposed to benefit.
this video provides an insight into how NGOs affect the countries they work in. Again, the people receiving the aid don't have much of a say in how it is administered, and the NGOs have their own agenda (however well meaning) already in place. One guy says that there are massive problems with sanitation, with AIDS, with lack of refrigeration, without concrete blocks, and with child slavery. But what he wants is for jobs to be created so that they can sort out their own problems
Trying is all well and good but what if you are generally crapping on the people who you are 'trying' to help. The problem is that NGOs are all driven by donor development agendas (that's where the money is after all) and pay no attention the real needs and aspirations of people they are supposed to be helping.
A excellent piece in the everyday life of an ordinary African trying to live on the limited resources gathered to continue survival. It's a real eye opener to the sustainable development of Africa. It's a great piece which takes the viewpoint of the underdog and how they are being penalised through NGO'S and their false security of ending Africa's debt. Superb!
What I find most interesting about this film is that it demonstates an alarming Western trend for supporting the work of NGOs as being unquestionably good, irrespective of the wider implications of NGO's generally low horizons for developing countries..another triumph for the WW film school!
it's such a shame that NGOs who have so many resources, contacts and abilities to help people don't actually listen to the KIND of help people want. surely that's the first step to helping anybody?!
They do have brilliant and big ideas and i pray that their ideas are taken and used. it will make such a difference. people don't realise how amazing Afica is and the difference listeninig to their ideas would make.
