Gorgeous. I heard Uri Caine play tonight at The Rex Hotel in Toronto with his trio and he was absolutely amazing. Bought this CD, got it signed, and am so excited to listen to it.
The IGMG has published an interesting tudy about "Mahler and the jazz" ; it tells about Uri Caine too . Mahler himself was in New York and listened to the premices of jazz .
I think Uri Caine made his own lecture of Mahler's 2d , which is a jazzman always does .Great composer Luciano Berio did so , in his sinfonia .And he loved Mahler.
But both don't pretend the classical way is being dead
Mahler is modern for ever
Moreover , the way Mahler was played 100 years ago isn't the same as today .
Great! The violinist is indeed adding some dissonant notes to the melody, but i find this much more 'honest', and evocative. I dont understand how the previous posts include people who feel this is a "Jimi Hendrix" rendition of the piece, or that this piece is too dissonant.
If you feel this is too dissonant then you truly do not understand contemporary music. Further, the music of K. Penderecki or John Cage (which is in fact dissonant) requires a level of maturity you perhaps do not possess.
Your opinion is of Uri's arrangement is primitively conservative. Its refreshing to hear this modern interpretation of Mahler's work. I would guess your exposure to improvised music is very little.
The violinist has done an excellent job of phrasing the melody in an interesting way with the benefit of a rhythm section capable of accompanying him.
(Actually jazz is one of my favourite forms of music, and I probably listen to jazz more than classical now - when I used to be obseessed with classical music.)
I'm all for improvising and a lot of what this guy did was cool but there's a point where you go 'primadonna' and really eff a piece of music up trying to be Jimi Hendrix. Uri..dude...you're not Jimi Henddrix.
How the hell is this anything resembling Jimi Hendrix? Uri is trying to modernize (and pay homage) to Mahler and I think he did an amazing job. Mark Feldman, the violinist, is taking a 21th approach to a beautiful piece. There is nothing more to it than that.
It is horrible and I know about contemporary music. The combination of dissonant with what Mahler beautifully wrote is plainly awful and full discordance.
AWFUL!

I love modern 'classical' music (art music is a better term) more than classical music before the 20th Century. But this stinks imho.

Well, it's certainly different - haha. But very awful is a more appropriate way to talk of it I think.
I can't really believe this. On one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

Well done, Uri Caine.
