beautiful animal i applaud you. I am an apprentice who hopes to start on a large raptor soon as well. My ideal bird is a ferruginous and i was wondering if you had any tips for me in any aspect of its training especially its manning.
@4950jwk Hi. I'm no expert but have trained a few birds for pleasure. Had a ferrugi 2yrs ago, absolute nightmare but got there in the end. Got rid cos she turned out to be a screamer. Have a look at 'Fedra training' and 'ferruginous screaming' on here. Up to you what bird you choose but I do think a ferrugi is a bit hard for 1st bird. If you do get one show it who's boss, keep in control. v powerful birds. My opinion, can't beat Harris hawk for 1st bird. Or an owl. Good luck, all the best
@96Vista Its very interesting you should say that. I have been with two falconers (an apprentice myself), one swears harris hawks for the beginner, as its generally an easy going bird. The other swears that i should jump in at the deep end with a Ferruginous, as it would teach me more in the long run.
@4950jwk I agree with the comment below... I don't think feruginous is a good starting bird, you'll have hard times with him. they are very powerful birds and very aggressive if not trained properly. Try to get a RT or a harris. My first bird was a CB and even tho I got footed few times every day it was worth the experience, that's the way you'll learn the most - on a bird that's not that easy to train... If you need any more advice (if you didn't get any bird yet :) ) just leave me a message.
if you pet or cuddle a trained owl , even then they get annoyed or bite ? ...
even if you raised them up from that way , i saw many owls like to get petting or cuddling ...
