I heard this song for the first time right after my first love passed away in 1977. I must have played it a million times. All these years later it takes me right back there, only now when I hear it I can (almost) smile. In Memory of David Brian Jones - 1952-1977. I'll never stop loving you.
I lost my best friend to a auto accedent while this album was popular. When I heard he had died I went to my car and pushed in the eight track and the first words I heard were "Did you ever lose someone who was close to you". I will never forget that moment or this song.
I lost my best friend to a auto accedent while this album was popular. When I heard he had died I went to my car and pushed in the eight track and the first words I heard were "Did you ever lose someone who was close to you". I will never forget that moment or this song.
I love you Susan. You were strong when I was weak. You always had my back and you always made me proud. Rest in peace my angel and may the good Lord hold you in his grace.
@lilackine Hi. Dan's great old band "the Legends" covered Neil Young and Buffalo Springfield in the 68-71 period. He as a writer, would be influenced by those artists he liked. No matter the era he surely was in tune with its music. Yes, how about Neil's "Helpless" over parts of this? You have a good ear. Great progressions do return repeatedly. The song is different but as someone else said, "remains the same," amazing and mystical and so cool.
@tubite2 Aloha Glad someone noticed cool about Dan's band. I didnt know. But I love this song even though Edgar sang it. It reminds me of Dan Fogelburg's song about the Fall when the "Sleepy Brown Woods Seem To Bow Their Heads Down to The Winter" from Captured Angel. Cant remember the name? I had it on 8 track. the only Fogelberg album I dont have on vinyl. I love that song. Both are hautingly sad, I guess sad songs help me appreciate the Spring. Im going to look for the legends
@lilackine I did respond abck then. Take a look, not direct to you. What you're hearing at 1:56 is like the chorus on DBTR, and the main effect is from the timing rather than the exact chords. Neil hangs on a D chord in DBTR's chorus extra long, with an extra half bar and then an quicker than expected switch to an A chord. "I shot my Baby..." Bay comign on the A chord. Autumn's similiar timing/chord change is when Dan sings "Well I lost my lover." with Lover comign on the changd new chord F?
stillspooky.................... I hear ya man. I lost my precious wife of 29 years and its a bitter pill to swallow . 47 is JUST TOO YOUNG. This song means more now than ever.
The meaning of this song has changed as I age, Autumn remains a time of reflection for me, it's just now I see seasons of life rather than seasons of the year.
Losing someone now is more likely a death, this summer my wife, and though I can't demand anything of myself now, I do know that it's coming again, it in this case love, following the cyclic pattern of life.
what a great song , reminds me of my childhood friend that died in 1976. we used to ride around in his old car listening to this 8 track . cant stop getting tears in my eyes when i hear it. i miss ya Scott.
what a great lifetime of feelings come flooding back when I hear this. My older brother was a blues musician and played from time to time with Johny so of course in the 70's he influenced me to both of these bothers. Not only that made me love them, also our school dances played this and that was always a popular number.
This song puts a smile on your heart. Fond memories, great lyrics and one of my favorites. It's like reheated pizza..... I just tastes better than the last time you heard it.
My Dad brought this album home right after some Led Zep.. change of life??? Men go through it too..lol.... anyway - I loved Frankenstein & it was all cool but I remember the talk about the front of the album .. yeah that was a real kicker..lmao!
Great song, a true classic! Brings back good memories of High School days for me. I also love 'Alta Mira," and "we all had a real good time." And of course "Free Ride," and "Frankenstein." Great party album.
I had this record on 8 track HAHAHA back in '72 and played it to death at ear splitting volume although it lamely switched tracks right in the middle of Frankenstein! All the songs are great, but Autumn? One of the best ever and so easy to play. I finger pick and strum it on my Washburn-- AWESOME in any quiet room
I was in a duck blind on the Mighty Mississippi when I recalled the part of the lyrics in this song about birds so it got into my head even though I have not heard it in 20 years.
...I can hear the intro as soon as this song ends..... (intro) "...I don't remember how I got this way, I dont recall what happened yesterday..." gives me goosbumps man... "We all had a real good time" fantastic memories attached to this whole album!
A memory on this song. Not to discredit Edgar but... Dan Hartman sang this with the Legends in the basement of the Railroad House in Marietta PA, and probably at other local gigs, well before joining the Edgar Winter Group. The Legends were doing power trio stuff then with Dan on lead, but this ballad was played most definitely at that time. I distinctly remember the drummer saying to Dan "do Autumn." It was memorable upon my first hearing it 40 years gone.
@tubite2 no discredit itaken-- This is the great mr hartman's showpeice --great song -- You are lucky to have heard it in its beginnings----I am jealous!
@tubite2 - Same time period maybe late 60's - do you remember the Legends playing anywhere else in the York area? I know I heard this before it made Winter's album but it wasn't Marietta. I can tell you off the top of my head we used to ride to the Lincoln Logs on 30 west, Nickies in Carlisle, Junction, Wheel, and the old 615 to catch live music. And the place down 24 (can't remember the name anymore). Thinking it would have been one of those places but I am positive I heard this live & local.
@simeon0north1 There is an interview with Larry Sadler at "thelegends64" page on Myspace. It gives more information about the gigs. The power trio years were 68-71. York Fair & Shippensburg U are mentioned. They did summer fests(York Memorial Stadium), colleges, dances, proms(Dover). They worked with the Beach Boys, James Gang and Aerosmith. They're on youtube somewhere. Info and Cds are out there. Just search "High Tower" or "The Legends" or "Larry Sadler" or "Dan Hartman."
@tubite2 - Thank you for all the info. I still can't place where it was that I heard this but I can remember talking about it when this album / single was released. At the time I thought maybe what I heard locally may have been a cover but later realized I heard it way before I heard of Edgar Winter. So thank you again for all the info.
I went from a beautiful spring romance with the lady I loved as a child to see it cool in the warmth of the sun and dryed up. How? to much stuff happens to keep love alive in both people. so just keep what was good in your heart. we all share the pain, just don't do it to the next guy and guard your heart
Dit nummer tientallen keren achter elkaar gedraaid op een zeer warme zomermiddag in de zomervakantie, heel lang geleden, in verband met meisje "Schults".
Yes, "they only come out at night" LP...it is Dan Hartman. We used to play it in my band back in the day. Great tune..I'm surprised there aren't more covers on here. I guess it's a nicely kept secret song...probably for the best as some modern cover would probably ruin it.
Dan Hartman did write this song. Pretty sure he sang it as well. Great tune as well. Brings back so many memories. I was 18 when this came out. Edgar Winter Group kicked ass. Seen them twice in the early 70's. Seen Johnny 3 times as well. Another show stopper back in day.
I have the 45 of I Can Dream About You. Dan grew up not too far from me. He was a little older than me. He was in a local band called The Legends. I have one of their 45's titled "Rock and Roll Woman. It was really an example of local boy makes good.
great song lot of memories here-good ol 70's.16 years old in '75,not a care in the world except knowing if my hair was just right. That summer, lost my virginity to a girl named Rosemary.I suppose I'm being overly informative.Oh well,I remember listening to this song so so many times in my room.
Oh the end of Summer 1973... Me and my friends were getting ready for 10th grade at good old St. Mary's. This song brings a tear to my eye just remembering the kissing that went on under the bleachers at the fair with my Edgar Winter look-a-like bobby lew! Great memories for all time.
Beautiful song. I saw The Edgar Winter Group when they toured on this album and if they played this song, the memory is long gone. Thanks for posting this.
Definitely the "sleeper" hit on this album. A excellently written, thoughtful tune that should have been the follow up hit to 'Frankenstein' but I think the rec execs thought making it into a hit would be the wrong direction for the EWG since Frankenstein and Free Ride had already made them hard-rockers. One of the lost gems of the 70s. Man, they just don't write 'em like that anymore. Thanks for the memories.
Such a sad, vivid and beautifully delivered song. Perfectly conjures images of having to face a colder, lonely season after having a joyful summer with someone you love.
They Only Come Out At Night is my favorite album of all time. No filler cuts as far as I'm concerned.
It amazes me that even 22 years after my uncle (God rest his soul) turned me on to the EWG, I can still listen to this disc start to finish and it's as fresh as the day it first blew my 16-year old mind.
I do hear a little Neil Young, but this song will always be what it is. I love the pictures with it. Thanks for letting me enjoy this song again. I will have it played at my funeral.
Verse chords = C add9 & F add9. Then C bass-drop. A G somewhere Im sure. Am & Em and/or variations of Em7 & Am7Maybe F or Fmag7. Down By the River=Em7 to A verses. Then Cmaj7 & Bm on the pre-chorus & G, D, A on chorus. Not same progressions. Melody? Don't hear it. Expecting to Fly? Don't hear, don't know chords. This isnt groundbreaking -- Basic chords and progressions. But Expecting to Fly is new in recording terms & some composition—multiple distinct parts.
Thanks, but do you hear the Neil young riffs and chords? EG.....LOST MY LOVER..... IS "DOWN BY THE RIVER" MELODY AND CHORDS i THINK "sO i GUESS i'LL STAY HERE" IS "eXPECTING TO FLY" OR , WELL, ANYWAY, SOMETHING nEIL yOUNG, BUT VERY BEAUTIFULLY eDGAR!
Dan was the man! I loved his 1st solo LP, Images. Have all his stuff. I don't think most people are aware of how many songs he wrote and sang in the EWG. He was a great talent. Ck his fansite!
Hangin Around, Round and Round, Alta Mira-- can you get any of those songs off this album up too? I've got the album, but don't have the computer to do youtube. I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it. Brings back great memories. Thanks.
@colette1127 Do you have access to the song "sundown" by edgar winter? If so could you post it? I had it on cd a few years back in Sacramento but someone swiped it. Thanks for the "Autumn" post!
One of my faves from way back.

The Legends were doing power trio stuff then with Dan on lead, but this ballad was played most definitely at that time. I distinctly remember the drummer saying to Dan "do Autumn." It was memorable upon my first hearing it 40 years gone.

@tubite2 no discredit itaken-- This is the great mr hartman's showpeice --great song -- You are lucky to have heard it in its beginnings----I am jealous!
roselandalvin 1 year ago
@tubite2 - Same time period maybe late 60's - do you remember the Legends playing anywhere else in the York area? I know I heard this before it made Winter's album but it wasn't Marietta. I can tell you off the top of my head we used to ride to the Lincoln Logs on 30 west, Nickies in Carlisle, Junction, Wheel, and the old 615 to catch live music. And the place down 24 (can't remember the name anymore). Thinking it would have been one of those places but I am positive I heard this live & local.
simeon0north1 11 months ago

It wasn't by a guy named Winter,Dan Hartman wrote this song

Hard to believe that Dan also sang "I Can Dream About You"-the 80's dance hit!
He also wrote "(Come on an' Take a) Free Ride"!
stratman123 2 years ago
I have the 45 of I Can Dream About You. Dan grew up not too far from me. He was a little older than me. He was in a local band called The Legends. I have one of their 45's titled "Rock and Roll Woman. It was really an example of local boy makes good.

I will have it played at my funeral.
cloverivy1 3 years ago 2
I'm a Neil freak, but no.
But Expecting to Fly is new in recording terms & some composition—multiple distinct parts.
jackstpaul 2 years ago
Dan was always my favorite. But does anyone hear the Neil Young in this?
lilackine 3 years ago
Thats Edgar.
default99telecom 3 years ago
Thanks, but do you hear the Neil young riffs and chords? EG.....LOST MY LOVER..... IS "DOWN BY THE RIVER" MELODY AND CHORDS i THINK "sO i GUESS i'LL STAY HERE" IS "eXPECTING TO FLY" OR , WELL, ANYWAY, SOMETHING nEIL yOUNG, BUT VERY BEAUTIFULLY eDGAR!
lilackine 3 years ago
If you're talking about who is singing lead on this song, it's Dan, not Edgar.
amgent 3 years ago
I thought it was dan, but did Edgar write it?
so what do you know about the Neil young connection just coincidence? I think Neil wrote his song before this one
lilackine 2 years ago
Dan was the man! I loved his 1st solo LP, Images. Have all his stuff. I don't think most people are aware of how many songs he wrote and sang in the EWG. He was a great talent. Ck his fansite!
